Endothelial Cell Proteins as Biomarkers in Susac Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Susac syndrome (SS) is a rare CD8+ T cell-mediated microangiopathy affecting the brain, retina, and auditory labyrinth. Endothelial injury is thought to be a central mechanism; however, no circulating disease biomarkers are known. We performed targeted proteomic profiling to identify circulating endothelial-associated proteins as biomarkers in SS. METHODS: Serum from four cases with definite or probable SS and eight healthy controls was analyzed using data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry. Analyses were restricted to proteins with established endothelial cell surface or me

Immunolocalization of calcium sensing and transport proteins in the murine endolymphatic sac indicates calciostatic functions within the inner ear.

An exceptionally low calcium (Ca2+) concentration in the inner ear endolymph ([Ca2+]endolymph) is crucial for proper auditory and vestibular function. The endolymphatic sac (ES) is believed to critically contribute to the maintenance of this low [Ca2+]endolymph. Here, we investigated the immunohistochemical localization of proteins that are presumably involved in the sensing and transport of extracellular Ca2+ in the murine ES epithelium. Light microscopic and fluorescence immunolabeling in paraffin-embedded murine ES tissue sections (male C57BL/6 mice, 6-8 weeks old) demonstrated the presence

[The correlation analysis of the cochlear hydrops degree found by MRI angiography with Meiniere's disease classification].

Objective:To investigate the correlation between the levels of cochlear hydrops with the clinic classification of Meniere's disease(MD).Method:3D-FlAIR MRI was performed 24 hours after intratympanic injection of 8-fold diluted Gadopentetate Dimeglumine in 31 patients with unilateral MD. We evaluated the levels of cochlear hydrops and further analyzed the correlation between the levels of cochlear hydrops and thresholds of pure tone audiometry and clinic classification of MD. Result:MRI image clearly distinguished perilymph from endolymph in the labyrinth. The images showed different levels of

Vertigo in childhood: proposal for a diagnostic algorithm based upon clinical experience.

The aim of this paper is to analyse, after clinical experience with a series of patients with established diagnoses and review of the literature, all relevant anamnestic features in order to build a simple diagnostic algorithm for vertigo in childhood. This study is a retrospective chart review. A series of 37 children underwent complete clinical and instrumental vestibular examination. Only neurological disorders or genetic diseases represented exclusion criteria. All diagnoses were reviewed after applying the most recent diagnostic guidelines. In our experience, the most common aetiology for

Disrupted functional connectivity of the default mode network due to acute vestibular deficit.

Vestibular neuritis is defined as a sudden unilateral partial failure of the vestibular nerve that impairs the forwarding of vestibular information from the labyrinth. The patient suffers from vertigo, horizontal nystagmus and postural instability with a tendency toward ipsilesional falls. Although vestibular neuritis is a common disease, the central mechanisms to compensate for the loss of precise vestibular information remain poorly understood. It was hypothesized that symptoms following acute vestibular neuritis originate from difficulties in the processing of diverging sensory information

Anaesthetic management of neonatal primary hyperparathyroidism.

The Coronavirus Disease of 2019 has now become one of the biggest pandemics of all time. Under the influence of ongoing mutations and widespread geographical expansions, several variants have been reported. Among those, the B.1.617.2 variant, most commonly known as the 'Delta variant' of the coronavirus disease - 19, was first reported in the state of Maharashtra of India in December 2020 and have currently been detected in over 43 countries across six continents around the globe. The B.1.617.2 variant of COVID 19 is a more treacherous variant than the alpha variant due to the increased replic

Selective vestibular ablation by KTP laser in endolymphatic hydrops.

OBJECTIVES AND HYPOTHESIS: Vertigo, the cause of disability in many patients with Ménière's disease, may be the result of the effects of endolymphatic hydrops on the semicircular canals. We hypothesize that intractable vertigo may be controlled by destruction of the semicircular canal neuroepithelium using visible light lasers without the need for extensive fenestration of the bony labyrinth. This study was designed to assess the cochlear effects of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser-assisted triple semicircular canal ablation (TSCA) in endolymphatic hydrops. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, pr

Incidence of Hypothyroidism in Meniere's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Meniere's disease is a disorder of the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear manifesting as vertigo, tinnitus, sensory neural hearing loss and aural fullness of known or unknown origin. Some patients may present after years into typical forms. The endocrine disorders, especially hypothyroidism and the factors like inflammation, trauma, otosclerosis, autoimmunity explains the multifactorial causation for the basis of Meniere's disease. Endolymphatic hydrops is the pathologic term named for the defective regulation of endolymph volume with respect to production and absorption. Howe

[Kearns-Sayre syndrome from the otorhinolaryngologic viewpoint].

External ophthalmoplegia, retinal pigmentary degeneration and heart block constitute the trias of Kearns-Sayre's syndrome. The aetiology of this disorder of oxidative metabolism is unknown. This syndrome must be more frequent than described. In the ENT field there is an extensive lack of differentiated data. Central neural and peripheral hearing disorders and vestibular disorders are in fact significant, as are also dysphagia, hoarseness and dysarthria in consequence of central and peripheral disorders in muscular function. The authors report on ENT findings in 4 patients with verified Kearns-

[Acute bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by immuno-mediated inner ear disease].

The audiovestibular system can be affected by an immunologic etiology. The immune-mediated inner ear disease (IMIED) is a syndrome that includes rapidly progressive sensorineural hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus, which occurs as a primary disorder or complicates certain autoimmune systemic conditions. However, if treated promptly with immunosuppression, the audiological sequel of IMIED may be avoided. We present a 28 year old female patient, who after rhinitis and mioarthralgias developed a vestibular syndrome. A week later she experienced bilateral hearing loss that progressed to deafness i
