The ocular manifestations in a family with Stickler syndrome and the results of laser photocoagulation as preventive treatment for retinal detachment are described. Forty-two family members with Stickler syndrome were retrospectively reviewed; 22 had ocular abnormalities, 22 had myopia and 16 had high myopia. BACKGROUND: A 69-year-old man presented with malignant glaucoma 10 days after an iridotomy for acute angle-closure glaucoma.
METHODS: The case notes are reviewed, describing his presentation and treatment, including the technique of extracapsular cataract extraction with anterior vitrectomy.

Recent studies have suggested that laser photocoagulation may be a favorable alternative to cryotherapy in the treatment of progressive extraretinal neovascularization in retinopathy of prematurity. Preliminary results of 10 eyes from 5 patients with so called "threshold" retinopathy of prematurity treated with indirect diode laser are reported. All 5 patients were less than 30 weeks gestational age. Laser therapy was performed on the avascular retina in both eyes. Authors report two cases of multiple recurrent pterygia which were treated with the usual surgical technique (sec. Arlt) and a subsequent excimer laser treatment. In case one they used slit mode, in the other case spot mode was applied. The superficial phototherapeutic ablations were performed with an Aesculap Meditec MEL 60 193-nm Arf excimer laser. PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of excimer laser photokeratectomy in bullous keratopathy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Treatment with excimer laser photokeratectomy was performed in 22 eyes with bullous keratopathy which developed after cataract extraction with IOL implantation.
RESULTS: During 1 month follow-up a slight improvement of visual acuity, local state improvement and subjective symptoms regression were noted. This state was stable in 14 eyes for 6-12 months, in 8 eyes the recurrence of the disease occurred, but without pain symptoms.

This study involved the clinical audit of 83 patients who had undergone laser surgery in the oral cavity during 1985 to 1990 in Birmingham, England. The argon-pumped tunable dye laser (APTDL) is useful in the treatment of a wide variety of superficial vascular and melanocytic lesions. Safety is enhanced by the use of a computerized scanning device--the Hexascan. Over a 1-year period, 140 patients (33 patients under the age of 21, and 21 patients from 0 to 10 years of age) were treated. Facial rosacea/telangiectasia was the most frequently treated lesion, followed by port-wine stain. Although multiple treatments were often necessary, fading was successfully achieved in most patients without scarring or other complications.

8 cases of ocular hypotony due to traumatic goniocyclodialysis were successfully treated by argonlaser photocoagulation with few complications during a follow-up of 6-68 months. The authors emphasized early application of the therapy as an effective and safe procedure to recover almost normal anatomic and physiologic structures of the chamber angle.

This review article describes the different methods of laser treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and their development.
