Mouse strain variation in SMA(+) myofibroblast development after corneal injury.

The purpose of present study was to investigate differences in myofibroblast development after haze-generating injury in different commonly used strains of mice. The inbred mouse strains used in this study were Balb/c, C57BL/6, C3H/HeJ and DBA/1J. All mice had uniform irregular phototherapeutic keratectomy with an excimer laser according to a previously published method to generate stromal haze. DBA/1J mice generated significantly greater density of alpha smooth muscle actin (SMA)-positive myofibroblasts in the anterior stroma compared to Balb/c (p < 0.05), C57BL/6 (p < 0.05) and C3H/HeJ (p <

Advanced treatment modalities for vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is an acquired multifocal and polygenic dyschromia that affects 1% to 3% of the world and presents as multiple depigmented macules and patches. Traditionally, the treatment of vitiligo has focused on pharmacologic interventions, but nearly half of all treated patients fail to respond successfully. OBJECTIVE: Several advanced techniques exist that can aid dermatologists in treating vitiligo in patients who do not respond favorably to traditional pharmacologic treatments. These advanced interventions include the use of the 308-nm excimer laser, total body depigmentation the

[Cataract surgery in biphakia patients].

INTRODUCTION: Although the IOL implantation was used initially just for cataract surgery, in the last period IOLs are used in treating myopia more than -12D and hyperopia more than +4D, in phakic eyes, when the indications of excimer laser are limited. OBSERVATION: We present the case of a 40 years old patient with the diagnosis: biphakia, complicated cataract and high myopia in both eyes. VA-RE = 2/50 cc, VA-LE = 3/50 cc, IOP-RE:15 mmHg, IOP-LE:16 mmHg. We performed, in two separate surgeries, the explantation of the intraocular lens, then the extraction of the opacified crystalline lens thr

Permanent corneal edema resulting from the treatment of PTK corneal haze with mitomycin: a case report.

A 39-year-old man underwent phototherapeutic keratectomy via excimer laser for recurrent corneal erosions secondary to basement membrane dystrophy with the subsequent development of irregular astigmatism and central stromal opacity. The cornea was scraped and treated with 0.02% mitomycin C using a total of 14 drops over a period of 6 days. Corneal edema developed as a consequence of low endothelial cell count with dysfunctional cells. A corneal transplant restored acuity of 20/20 with binocular vision. It is believed that the underlying endothelium was exposed to toxic doses of mitomycin C suf

Phototherapeutic keratectomy for the treatment of nodular subepithelial corneal scars in patients with keratoconus who are contact lens intolerant.

The management of keratoconus with contact lenses may be complicated by punctate epithelial keratopathy, epithelial breakdown, and nodular, raised subepithelial scars. We report four consecutive cases of contact lens intolerance due to pain in patients with keratoconus and raised, nodular scars. Excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) was used to treat all patients. Follow-up ranged from 7 to 14 months (mean: 10 months). All patients resumed rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens wear 2 to 4 weeks after surgery. Visual acuities ranged from 20/40 to 20/70 before surgery and improved to
