Evaluation of graft osteogenesis using fractal dimension analysis on cone-beam computed tomography images following maxillary sinus lift surgery.

BACKGROUND: Fractal dimension (FD) analysis is a method used to numerically characterize the complexity of structures or tissues. After sinus lift procedures, the graft material gradually transforms into natural bone over time. This study aimed to evaluate the interpretability of this transformation by assessing changes in FD values. METHODS: In this retrospective study, data from a total of 36 patients (42 hemimaxillae), including 13 females (17 hemimaxillae) and 23 males (25 hemimaxillae), were analyzed. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images obtained preoperatively and at six months po

Efficacy of Platelet and Leukocyte Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) in the healing process and bone repair in maxillary sinus lift surgeries: a systematic review.

Sinus lift surgery is essential after pneumatization caused by loss of posterior teeth. Leukocyte-Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) accelerates bone healing by releasing growth factors that promote angiogenesis, cell differentiation, and inflammatory modulation. To evaluate the efficacy of L-PRF in bone healing and repair in sinus lift surgeries, in addition to investigating its role in angiogenesis and inflammatory modulation. The systematic review protocol included definition of the research question, search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, study types, effect measures, screening metho

Postoperative Hematuria Is the Key to Achieving No Indwelling Urethral Catheter Immediately After Prostatic Urethral Lift: A Japanese Single-Center Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: The postoperative urethral catheter-free has been possible immediately after prostatic urethral lift (PUL) for benign prostatic hyperplasia; however, there are no specific criteria for urethral catheter-free status. This study evaluated the efficacy of the criteria for urethral catheter-free status after PUL. METHODS: We evaluated the criteria for urethral catheter-free status after PUL on hematuria grade and prospectively reviewed the results. The grade of hematuria was assessed on a scale of five levels. This study was classified as Group A-postoperative urethral catheter-free w

Our 40 Years' Experience on Face and Neck Lift Procedures with High-SMAS Flap Techniques: How to Manage Secondary and Tertiary Surgeries.

BACKGROUND: Facial aging drives a growing demand for esthetic procedures, with nonsurgical options often falling short in longevity compared to surgery. Despite primary face and neck lift techniques receiving substantial attention, revision procedures have been relatively overlooked in terms of their unique surgical management, complication incidence, and preventive strategies. METHODS: The authors present a 40-year experience with revision face and neck lifts, comprising 283 cases. The primary focus was on the high-SMAS flap technique in revision surgeries, with data collected on complicatio

Effect of biceps-to-triceps transfer on rotator cuff stress during upper limb weight-bearing lift in tetraplegia: A modeling and simulation analysis.

Rotator cuff stress during upper limb weight-bearing lifts presumably contribute to rotator cuff disease, which is the most common cause of … peak isometric muscle force. We hypothesized that rotator cuff stresses would be lower in simulated lifting with biceps transfer relative to simulated lifting without biceps transfer. We found that limited elbow extension strength in individuals with tetraplegia, regardless of whether elbow strength is enabled via biceps transfer or is residual after spin …

High ligation of the anal fistula tract by lateral approach: A prospective cohort study on a modification of the ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) technique.

BACKGROUND: Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) is a sphincter-preserving operation for anal fistulas. Although it has advantages in preserving continence after surgery, it is difficult to perform owing to the narrow field of view. We performed a modified surgical procedure based on the LIFT to overcome these drawbacks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients who were scheduled to undergo high ligation of the anal fistula tract by the lateral approach for the treatment of transsphincteric anal fistulas were prospectively studied. Instead of making a new stab incision on

Influence of backrest angle on swallowing musculature activity and physical strain during the head lift exercise in elderly women compared with young women.

The head lift exercise (HLE) is the most common exercise for strengthening the swallowing musculature in clinical situations. This study investigated whether a change in the backrest angle of a bed influences swallowing musculature activity and physical strain during the HLE and whether it can generate an appropriate exercise load for swallowing musculature activity for older women compared with younger women. Participants were 10 elderly women and 10 young women, each of whom performed the HLE with a backrest randomly angled at 0°, 15°, 30° and 45°. The activity of the suprahyoid, infrahyoid

Prostatic Urethral Lift: A Unique Minimally Invasive Surgical Treatment of Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Secondary to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

The prostatic urethral lift (PUL) is a unique, nonthermal approach to treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be conducted under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. In published clinical studies, most voiding tested patients do not require a catheter. After PUL, patients experience rapid recovery with minimal adverse effects. Average symptom response is significant by 2 weeks, improves through 3 months, and remains stable through 4 years. Erectile and ejaculatory functions are preserved. This treatment represents a desirable s

External Hand Forces Exerted by Long-Term Care Staff to Push Floor-Based Lifts: Effects of Flooring System and Resident Weight.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of flooring type and resident weight on external hand forces required to push floor-based lifts in long-term care (LTC). BACKGROUND: Novel compliant flooring is designed to reduce fall-related injuries among LTC residents but may increase forces required for staff to perform pushing tasks. A motorized lift may offset the effect of flooring on push forces. METHOD: Fourteen female LTC staff performed straight-line pushes with two floor-based lifts (conventional, motor driven) loaded with passengers of average and 90th-percentile r

Prospective, randomized, multinational study of prostatic urethral lift versus transurethral resection of the prostate: 12-month results from the BPH6 study.

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is considered the gold standard for male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, TURP may lead to sexual dysfunction and incontinence, and has a long recovery period. Prostatic urethral lift (PUL) is a treatment option that may overcome these limitations. OBJECTIVE: To compare PUL to TURP with regard to LUTS improvement, recovery, worsening of erectile and ejaculatory function, continence and safety (BPH6). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective, randomized, controlled tri
