An infected congenital commissural lip fistula. Report of a case.

A case of infected congenital commissural lip fistula is presented. It appeared as a cheek swelling associated with inflammation due to infection. This case was treated with antibiotics and surgical drainage through the fistula. Our experience suggests that the possibility of infection of the fistula should be considered particularly in cases involved with angular stomatitis and/or scratching injury close to the commissure of the lips.

Effects of cleft lip and palate on the nasal airway in children.

Clefts of the lip and palate often produce significant nasal deformities and reduced nasal airway size. The purpose of this study was to assess how type of cleft affects nasal cross-sectional area and mode of breathing. The pressure-flow technique was used to estimate nasal airway size and modified inductive plethysmography was used to determine percent of nasal breathing in 60 children with cleft lip and palate aged 6 to 15 years. Ninety-five normal children served as controls. The data demonstrate that nasal size decreased among cleft types as follows: children with bilateral cleft lip and p…

Pursed lips breathing training using ear oximetry.

Pursed lips breathing (PLB) training is often used in the management of patients with chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD). Previous clinical studies have demonstrated that PLB improves arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and CO2 removal as well as relieving dyspnea. Twelve hypoxemic subjects with stable COLD were randomly assigned to either the pursed lips (P) or control group consisting of general relaxation (R). The SaO2 was monitored via ear oximetry, and respiratory rate and tidal volume were monitored using a strain gage transducer and the minute volume was calculated. The PLB was taugh…

Complete median cleft of the upper lip and alveolus with holoprosencephaly.

A case of complete median cleft of the upper lip and alveolus with holoprosencephaly is presented. An 8-month-old girl was successfully treated by closure of the median upper lip. In addition, 9 patients who have undergone cheiloplasty of complete median cleft of the upper lip with holoprosencephaly reported in the Japanese literature, are reviewed.

Multiple, painless, verruciform nodules on the mucosa of the lower lip.

Oral condyloma acuminatum is an uncommon infectious disease of viral origin. Clinicians should be aware that the lesions of this disease are autoinoculable and also may be transmitted as a venereal disease. In patients with oral lesions, a history of sexual contact as a source of transmission usually can be obtained.

[Syringocystadenoma papilliferum as a differential diagnosis of a carcinoma of the lower lip].

A 56-year-old patient showed a skin-colored tumor of the lower lip which had been photographically documented since his 10th year of age. On account of the localisation, increase of size during the last few months, as well as irregular epithelial hyperplasia observed in a punch biopsy from the periphery, we suspected the tumor to be a squamous cell carcinoma. Histological examination, however, revealed syringocystadenoma papilliferum.

Correction of alar deformity in cleft lip by marginal incision.

A surgical technique is described for correcting the drooping alar rim associated with cleft lip. An incision is made on the cleft-side alar rim such that the rims will be symmetrical. After extensive undermining between the dorsal skin and alar cartilages, a suspension suture is positioned so as to pull the drooping point of the nostril rim in an anteromediocranial direction to the septovestibular junction on the normal side. The upper and lateral walls of the nasal vestibule, together with the alar cartilage, are fixed to the dorsal skin in a pushed-back position using a special technique. F…

Epidemiological evaluation of sunlight as a risk factor of lip cancer.

A total of 3,169 cases of lip cancer in males and 303 cases in females were diagnosed in Finland and reported to the Finnish Cancer Registry in 1953-73. The diagnosis was verified histologically in 95% of the cases in males and in 92% in females. The mean annual age-adjusted incidence rate was 7·3/10(5) in males and 0·5/10(5) in females. The annual incidence for males has decreased since the early 1960s. The decrease involved all age groups and was not due to a cohort effect. Only a very slight decrease in the risk was observable in females. The incidence was clearly higher in rural than in ur…

[Familial syndrome with lip fistulas and microforms of cleft velum].

Four siblings are reported who have congenital fistulae of their lower lips (with one exception) associated with bifid uvula and partial manifestations of submucous cleft palate, while their mother has a bilateral cleft lip and palate as well as bilateral fistulae of the lip. The malformation is possibly transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. This special type of hereditary combination is not mentioned in the literature, as far as we know, and appears to be a very rare clinical variation of the syndrome normally associated with clefts of lip and palate and fistulae of the lip.

Triangular flap for atypical cleft lip. A modification in design.

Standardized steps or criteria for designing a triangular flap do not always fit for all types of cleft lip repair. Some compromise among the criteria is required, especially for atypical cases, such as those with a long vertical height on the noncleft side and a short lateral lip element. In order to secure symmetry in the horizontal length of vermilion, or in the distance from the peak of the cupid's bow to the mouth corner, E' should be located as high as allowable. The ratio of the length of the vertical incision to that of the triangular base affects the final shape of the repaired lip in…
