Neural processing of spoken words in specific language impairment and dyslexia.

Young adults with a history of specific language impairment (SLI) differ from reading-impaired (dyslexic) individuals in terms of limited vocabulary and poor verbal short-term memory. Phonological short-term memory has been shown to play a significant role in learning new words. We investigated the neural signatures of auditory word recognition and word repetition in young adults with SLI, dyslexia and normal language development using magnetoencephalography. The stimuli were 7-8 letter spoken real words and pseudo-words. They evoked a transient peak at 100 ms (N100m) followed by longer-lastin…

Electromagnetic-guided neuroendoscopy in the pediatric population.

OBJECT: Image-guided neuroendoscopy is being increasingly used in an attempt to reduce the morbidity associated with surgery and to make navigation easier. It has a particularly useful application in the pediatric population for the treatment of conditions such as complex hydrocephalus and arachnoid cysts. However, its use has been limited by the requirement for rigid head fixation, which may be difficult in infants because of the immaturity of the skull. In addition there can be line-of-sight issues, which can be a problem with optical-based systems. Electromagnetic navigation has eliminated

Chaotic analysis approach in neonatal magneto-encephalography.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of any non-linearity in the magneto-encephalographic recordings (MEG) in neonates born to pre-eclamptic mothers in comparison with the ones born to mothers having uncomplicated pregnancies, in order to find out differences in the mechanisms underlying their brain waves. Our study population consisted of 40 term neonates who were delivered normally, without any clinical signs of brain damage. Thirty of them had a normal pregnancy and labour with normal Apgar scores, umbilical cord pH, and birth weight, while 10 neonates had suffered a pre-ec

Auditory sensory processing in autism: a magnetoencephalographic study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with autism show clinical features suggestive of abnormal processing of auditory and other sensory information. We hypothesized that low-functioning autistic subjects present abnormalities in discriminating simple auditory stimuli at sensory system preconscious stages of cortical processing. METHODS: To verify our hypothesis, we used magnetoencephalographic measurements of mismatch field (MMF), which reflects the detection of a change in the physical characteristics of a repetitive sound. Fourteen patients (aged 8-32 years) who met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for autistic

Entropy of the resting state cortex in epilepsy.

Epilepsy has long been conceptualised as a disorder in which aberrant brain dynamics extend beyond the epileptogenic zone. Evidence demonstrates that loss of entropy is a generic feature of pathological dynamics in the brain, including the ictal state. However, the impact of recurrent seizures on entropy in the interictal state remains unknown. Resting state magnetoencephalography (MEG) scans and resection masks of 32 individuals with epilepsy who had Engel I outcome post-surgery were retrospectively retrieved. Using co-registered FreeSurfer parcellations, we reconstructed the source localised…

Deep brain stimulation of the central thalamus restores arousal and motivation in a zolpidem-responsive patient with akinetic mutism after severe brain injury.

After severe brain injury, zolpidem is known to cause spectacular, often short-lived, restorations of brain functions in a small subgroup of … tion and ability to walk and eat in an otherwise wheelchair-bound and mute patient. With the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG), we revealed that DBS was generally associated with a marked decrease in aberrantly high levels of functional connectivity throughout the brain, mimicking the effects of zolpidem. These results imply that 'pathological hyperconnectivity' after …

The spectral slope as a marker of excitation/inhibition ratio and cognitive functioning in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by neuronal and synaptic loss, resulting in an imbalance of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission and potentially cognitive impairment. Current methods for measuring the excitation/inhibition (E/I) ratio are mostly invasive, but recent research combining neurocomputational modeling with measurements of local field potentials has indicated that the slope with which the power spectrum of neuronal activity captured by electro- and/or magnetoencephalography rolls off, is a non-invasive biomarker of the E/I ratio. A stee…

Value and limitations of intracranial recordings for validating electric field modeling for transcranial brain stimulation.

Comparing electric field simulations from individualized head models against in-vivo intra-cranial recordings is considered the gold standard for direct validation of computational field modeling for transcranial brain stimulation and brain mapping techniques such as electro- and magnetoencephalography. The measurements also help to improve simulation accuracy by pinning down the factors having the largest influence on the simulations. Here we compare field simulations from four different automated pipelines against intracranial voltage recordings in an existing dataset of 14 epilepsy patients…

Evidence for increased visual gamma responses in photosensitive epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: A sustained gamma (30-70 Hz) oscillation induced in occipital cortex by high-contrast visual stimulation has been well characterised in animal local field potential recordings and in healthy human participants using magnetoencephalography (MEG). The spatial frequency of a static grating stimulus that gives maximal gamma is also that most likely to provoke seizures in photosensitive epilepsy. METHODS: We used MEG to study visual responses induced by grating stimuli of varying contrast and size in twelve patients with photosensitive epilepsy and two matched control groups, one with …

Form-from-motion: MEG evidence for time course and processing sequence.

The neural mechanisms and role of attention in the processing of visual form defined by luminance or motion cues were studied using magnetoencephalography. Subjects viewed bilateral stimuli composed of moving random dots and were instructed to covertly attend to either left or right hemifield stimuli in order to detect designated target stimuli that required a response. To generate form-from-motion (FFMo) stimuli, a subset of the dots could begin to move coherently to create the appearance of a simple form (e.g., square). In other blocks, to generate form-from-luminance (FFLu) stimuli that ser…

Endogenous auditory and motor brain rhythms predict individual speech tracking.

Slow, endogenous brain rhythms in the auditory cortex are hypothesized to track acoustic amplitude modulations during speech comprehension. Temporal predictions from the motor system are thought to enhance this tracking. However, direct evidence for the involvement of endogenous auditory and motor brain rhythms is lacking. Combining magnetoencephalographic recordings with behavioral data, we here show that endogenous peak frequencies of individuals' resting-state theta rhythm in superior temporal gyrus predict speech tracking during comprehension. Importantly, endogenous rates of speech motor

Determining hemispheric language dominance from MEG beta-power modulations: Concordance with fMRI.

Accurate identification of the language-dominant hemisphere is essential for surgical planning in drug-resistant focal epilepsy. Functional MRI is widely used as a noninvasive alternative to the Wada test but may be contraindicated or unreliable in some patients, motivating complementary approaches such as magnetoencephalography (MEG). We tested whether beta-band MEG power suppression can provide reliable language lateralization when combined with a task-matched nonlinguistic control, participant/ROI-specific timing, and a multi-threshold weighted-bootstrap laterality index (LI). Seventy-four …

Motor Prediction Reduces Beta-Band Power and Enhances Cerebellar-Somatosensory Connectivity before Self-Touch to Enable Its Attenuation.

Motor control theories suggest that the brain uses forward models to predict self-generated tactile input during voluntary movements, thereby reducing the intensity of reafferent tactile sensations. When one's own body is the target, this phenomenon is called self-touch attenuation. Although self-touch attenuation is well documented, it remains unclear how prediction-related neural mechanisms drive attenuation before the self-touch input. We used magnetoencephalography to examine the neural correlates of self-touch prediction. Twenty-four human participants (12 females, 12 males) performed a s…

Inhibitory effect of tDCS on auditory evoked response: Simultaneous MEG-tDCS reveals causal role of right auditory cortex in pitch learning.

A body of literature has demonstrated that the right auditory cortex (AC) plays a dominant role in fine pitch processing. However, our understanding is relatively limited about whether this asymmetry extends to perceptual learning of pitch. There is also a lack of causal evidence regarding the role of the right AC in pitch learning.  We addressed these points with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), adapting a previous behavioral study in which anodal tDCS over the right AC was shown to block improvement of a microtonal pitch pattern learning task over 3 days. To address the

Functional decline of the precuneus associated with mild cognitive impairment: Magnetoencephalographic observations.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a border or precursor state of dementia. To optimize implemented interventions for MCI, it is essential to clarify the underlying neural mechanisms. However, knowledge regarding the brain regions responsible for MCI is still limited. Here, we implemented the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test, a screening tool for MCI, in 20 healthy elderly participants (mean age, 67.5 years), and then recorded magnetoencephalograms (MEG) while they performed a visual sequential memory task. In the task, each participant memorized the four possible directions of seven
