[Implant restoration on folded fibular graft for the repair of mandibular defect].

Objective: To discuss the key points of implant restoration on folded fibular graft for mandibular defect. Methods: Fifteen patients with mandibular ameloblastoma were treated by segmental resection of the mandible. The mandibular defect was reconstructed with vascularized folded fibular graft. Implant restoration on the graft was conduced 6-9 months after operation. The results were evaluated. Results: All patients had no tenderness in the temporomandibular joint region. The mouth opening reached 3.1-3.9 cm and the occlusion relationship was good. There was no obvious abnormality in masticatory

Reconstruction of Mandibular Segmental Detects Using Transport Disk Distraction Osteogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Distraction osteogenesis (DO) has become an important alternative for bone defect reconstruction. The study aims to investigate the clinical feasibility and efficiency of transport disc DO (TDDO) for reconstruction of segmental defect of mandible and further dental implant treatment. METHODS: A serial of 6 patients diagnosed with ameloblastoma or keratocystic odontogenic tumor were included in this study. Computed tomography (CT) scanning and panoramic radiograph were performed for preoperative evaluation and surgery planning. Transport disc DO was applied simultaneously with tumo

Keratoameloblastoma of the mandible.

INTRODUCTION: Keratoameloblastoma is an extremely rare odontogenic tumor, as only 18 cases have been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: The authors report a case of keratoameloblastoma in a 32-year-old woman and review the literature concerning the clinical features, radiological appearance, histopathological findings and treatment options. DISCUSSION: Keratoameloblastoma is a rare tumor observed more frequently in males (sex ratio: 3:1) characterized by extensive keratin production in odontogenic islets and fibrous stroma.

Nonvascularized Free Transport Distraction Osteogenesis to Reconstruct the Mandibular Defect of a Patient With an Ossifying Fibroma: A Case Report.

We report on a case in which trifocal distraction osteogenesis was applied in a patient with a mandibular defect caused by resection of an ossifying fibroma. During the surgical procedure, we accidentally dissected the surrounding periosteal tissue of the left transport completely in the process of transport disc preparation and made the disc into a free bone graft. However, we still used this transport and successfully completed the distraction osteogenesis. The patient's facial and occlusal function were regained after treatment.

Osteochondroma of the coronoid process of the mandible.

We describe a rare case of osteochondroma of the coronoid process of mandible accompanied by severe trismus in a 14-year-old Japanese boy. The patient had initially been diagnosed as having internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and conservative treatment had failed to improve the symptoms. Despite extremely limited TMJ movement, panoramic radiography revealed no abnormality, but magnetic resonance imaging suggested internal derangement of the left TMJ. Five months later, the trismus worsened and computed tomography revealed a bone-like mass confluent with the coronoid proc

[Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma of the mandible].

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma is an extremely rare tumor of the mandible. The diagnosis is based on the evidences showing that the tumor is neither originated from a distant metastasis of another primary tumor nor an invasive oral cancer. In this article, we report a 59-year-old female case with a medical history of ductal carcinoma of the breast, lichen planus, and rheumatoid arthritis who was admitted with complaints of a painful and swollen left lower jaw, and was surgically treated for primary intraosseous carcinoma of the mandible and with postoperative adjuvant radiotherap

A single cervical lymph node metastasis of malignant ameloblastoma.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical node metastasis of malignant ameloblastoma is extremely rare. Because of its rarity, there is no standard treatment modality in a single lymph node metastasis in malignant ameloblastoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients of malignant ameloblastoma involving a single cervical lymph node metastasis and one new case were reviewed. Neck treatment was classified into neck dissection and simple excision. Local nodal recurrence, distant metastasis and follow-up periods were investigated. RESULTS: Eight patients were treated with neck dissection (group A) and four patient

Ameloblastic fibrodentinoma with a congenitally missing second premolar tooth: a case report.

Ameloblastic fibrodentinoma (AFD) is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor that occurs predominantly in children and young adults. AFD is usually associated with delayed eruption of the tooth and shows painless swelling. We present a case of AFD affecting an 8-year-old Japanese girl with a complaint of delayed eruption of her left mandibular second premolar tooth. Intraoral examination did not reveal any sign of pain or swelling in the left mandible. Panoramic radiography revealed a radiolucent and well-circumscribed lesion, which contained radiopaque material at the premolar lesion of the lef

Difficulties in the diagnosis of plexiform ameloblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Plexiform ameloblastoma is a rare and benign odontogenic tumor which may reach grotesque proportions affecting over a region of lower molars. The correct diagnosis is essential to reduce this risk of local recurrences and obtain an effective treatment. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old female patient, Caucasian, presented a complaint of painless facial asymmetry. The clinical and imaginological examinations showed an increase in volume in the left mandibular body related to radiolucent unilocular injury near the apex of the first molar, expansion of the vestibular cortical bone, and toot

Intraosseous noninvoluting congenital hemangioma of the mandible in a neonate.

Hemangiomas are benign tumors of the capillary endothelium involved in varied clinical and pathologic entities. Congenital hemangioma is quite rare compared to infantile hemangioma. Hemangiomas rarely occur in bone. Intraosseous hemangiomas are most commonly found in the vertebral column and skull. The mandible is the most frequently affected skull bone. Intraosseous hemangiomas commonly present in the second decade of life. Here, we report a neonate with noninvoluting congenital hemangioma of the mandible. To our knowledge, she is the youngest patient reported in the literature.

Large erupting complex odontoma: a case report.

Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumours. They are usually asymptomatic and are often discovered during routine radiography. We report a case of a large erupting complex odontoma that caused pain, infection and facial asymmetry. This case is significant as there are few reports of complex odontoma erupting in the oral cavity.

[Treatment of recurrent odontogenic keratocyst with enucleation and cryosurgery: a retrospective study of 10 cases].

INTRODUCTION: There are conflicting data on the association between early exposure to pets and allergic diseases. Bias related to retrospective information on pet ownership has been addressed as a reason for distorted study results. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate how early exposure to cat and dog relates to IgE-sensitization and asthma in children at 2 and 4 years of age, in a prospective birth-cohort study. METHODS: Four thousand and eighty-nine families with children born 1994-1996 in predefined areas of Stockholm answered questionnaires on environmental factors and symptoms of allergic disease a

Ultrasonographic appearance of dermoid and epidermoid cysts in the head and neck.

The ultrasonographic features of 6 histologically proven dermoid and epidermoid cysts in the head and neck are reported. All 6 cysts had internal echoes, with a solid appearance. Five of the 6 were echogenic, with only slight or no posterior echo enhancement. Amorphous keratinous debris from keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium filled the lumen of each cyst, producing the internal echoes. Most of the true solid tumors examined were generally of lower echogenicity, and could be differentiated from dermoid and epidermoid cysts ultrasonographically, although lipomas were indistinguishable

Resection of a giant ossifying fibroma through an intraoral approach in a 9-year-old child: immediate reconstruction and 6-year cephalometric follow-up.

An unusual opportunity was afforded to study the growth and development of the facial structures of a 9-year-old child who underwent major mandibular reconstruction. The longitudinal studies confirmed the present concepts of the factors responsible for mandibular growth as well as their repercussions on other facial structures. An intraoral subperiosteal resection of a major portion of the right hemimandible sparing the upper part of the mandibular ramus was required to eradicate a large ossifying fibroma. An iliac bone graft consisting of the outer table of cortical bone and cancellous bone w

[Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia: A case report].

Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is an uncommon, non-neoplastic benign fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws, characterized by cementum-like tissue deposition. It primarily affects middle-aged women of African and East Asian descent. Generally asymptomatic, this condition is frequently identified incidentally through radiographs showing radiopacities with radiolucent rims. This report presented a case of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) in a 45-year-old Asian female. The patient exhibited secondary caries extending to the pulp chamber on the left mandibular first molar, showed no signs of pu

The 'D-M-C' strategy for conventional ameloblastoma of the mandible: a retrospective study.

The purpose of this multicentre study was to evaluate the efficacy of the 'dredging-marsupialization-curettage' (D-M-C) strategy in the treatment of conventional intraosseous ameloblastoma of the mandible. A total of 31 patients from three institutions, who had a pathological diagnosis of conventional ameloblastoma of the mandible, were treated with the D-M-C strategy. The surgical protocol comprised a dredging and marsupialization (D-M) step, with additional D-M steps as required. The patients then underwent curettage (C) once an obvious effect of the D-M step had been achieved during follow-
