BACKGROUND: Male breast cancer is a rare type of neoplasm, being 1% of all breast tumors. An increasing relevance is given to genetic factors. Familiarity is present in 10% of cases reported in literature. Gynecomastia is frequently associated. Personal experience about this pathology is compared with the most recent data of the literature.
METHODS: Nine cases of male breast cancer observed among 519 breast tumors operated between 1982 and 1997 are reported. Etiologic and prognostic aspects, surgical and complementary therapy of breast cancer in man are examined and the high rate of II-III st

PURPOSE: There is enormous range in the reported rates of breast reconstruction. This study explored reasons for this variation by reviewing the published literature to examine rates of reconstruction, factors associated with uptake, and possible barriers.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed. Eligible studies reported rates of breast reconstruction and variables associated with uptake in women undergoing mastectomy for early invasive or in situ breast malignancy.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight eligible studies were included, reporting 159,305 cases of breast reconstruction in

The analysis includes 730 consecutive breast cancer patients operated radically. The impact on local and distant recurrences as well as the probability of 5-year disease free survival according to age, hormonal status, primary tumor and axillary nodes stage, number of involved nodes, presence of extracapsular invasion and histopathological grade was assessed. Results of this analysis showed the stage of axillary lymph nodes as the most important prognostic factor for the estimation of the risk of failure. It was also revealed that well-known, classic factors are often insufficient to determine

Background Phantom phenomena - pain or other sensations appearing to come from amputated body parts - are frequent consequences of amputation and can cause considerable suffering. Also, stump pain, located in the residual limb, is in the literature often related to the phantom phenomena. The condition is not specific to amputated limbs and has, to a lesser extent, been reported to be present after radical surgery in other body parts such as breast, rectum and teeth. Multi-causal theories are used when trying to understand these phenomena, which are recognized as the result of complex interacti

RATIONALE: The incidence of pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is increasing nowadays, and its diagnosis and treatment remain complicated due to the consideration of the fetus. The available data on PABC are primarily derived from case reports since there are ethical restrictions on conducting randomized clinical trials. In the present work, we reported a case of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive PABC and described the diagnosis and treatment for such type of breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the usefulness of activated carbon particles (CH40) as a vital staining dye for visualizing lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes in breast cancer.
DESIGN: A retrospective evaluation.
SETTING: Department of Surgery in Sendai National Hospital, Japan, a 716-bed teaching hospital.
METHODS: To identify as many lymph nodes as possible in the axillary fat, by which we might decrease the possibility of the presence of undetected metastatic nodes, an emulsion of activated carbon particles (CH40) was injected into the centre of the mammary gland, close to the tumour site, 3 da

PURPOSE: The prognostic significance of pathological response of primary tumor and metastatic axillary lymph nodes after neoadjuvant chemotherapy was assessed in patients with noninflammatory locally advanced breast carcinoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1989 and April 1995, 148 consecutive patients with locally advanced breast carcinoma participated in the study. Of these, 140 fully evaluable patients (67, stage IIIA; 73, stage IIIB) were treated with three courses of 5-fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide (FAC), followed by modified radical mastectomy when technically f

The charts of 44 women who underwent 47 immediate postmastectomy prosthetic breast reconstructions (IPMPBR) with subpectoral prostheses (long-term implant, long-term expandable implant or tissue expanders followed by long-term prosthetic placement) were retrospectively reviewed. Follow-up was from 3 to 49 months (median 18 months). Patient ages ranged from 31 to 77 years (median 42) but 82 per cent were under 60 years old. Indications for mastectomy were infiltrating cancer in 30 patients, intraductal cancer in 11, lobular carcinoma in situ in two and prophylaxis in one. There were 11 patients

We describe a 50-year-old woman with a 5-month history of multiple asymptomatic papulonodular lesions on the left chest area. Biopsy was consistent with cutaneous metastases from a ductal breast carcinoma. No distant metastatic lesions were detected. The patient was referred to the Gynecologic Oncology Department. Treatment included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. At present the patient is well with no signs of recurrence. This case reports a clinically remarkable cutaneous metastatic breast carcinoma.

PURPOSE: To define the individual factors and combinations of factors associated with increased risk of locoregional recurrence (LRR) that may justify postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) in patients with T1-T2 breast cancer and one to three positive nodes.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study cohort comprised 821 women referred to the British Columbia Cancer Agency between 1989 and 1997 with pathologic T1-T2 breast cancer and one to three positive nodes treated with mastectomy without adjuvant RT. The 10-year Kaplan-Meier estimates of isolated LRR and LRR with or without simultaneous distant recur

Nipple discharge was the presenting complaint in 104 patients (1.5%) from a series of 7000 women who were seen in a breast clinic over a 13-year period. Complete follow-up information was available in 66 Chinese patients. The mean age at presentation was 47 years. Twenty-six patients (39%) were postmenopausal. Unilateral discharge (92%) from a single duct (77%) was the main finding. There were five patients (8%) with proven breast cancer; benign duct papilloma was found in 17 patients. Multivariate analysis showed that cancer was most likely in women over the age of 55 (P < 0.05) and when the

BACKGROUND: Late menarche, early menopause, high parity, and early first birth decrease the risk of development of breast cancer. The influence of these factors on the survival of breast cancer patients has not been explained.
METHODS: A group of 1885 patients with operable breast cancer was studied retrospectively. A univariate analysis was used to calculate 10-year overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) in relation to age, menopausal status, age at menarche and menopause, and number of pregnancies and deliveries. A multivariate analysis (Cox model) was performed in which clas

BACKGROUND: Sentinel-lymph-node (SLN) surgery was designed to minimise the side-effects of lymph-node surgery but still offer outcomes equivalent to axillary-lymph-node dissection (ALND). The aims of National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) trial B-32 were to establish whether SLN resection in patients with breast cancer achieves the same survival and regional control as ALND, but with fewer side-effects.
METHODS: NSABP B-32 was a randomised controlled phase 3 trial done at 80 centres in Canada and the USA between May 1, 1999, and Feb 29, 2004. Women with invasive breast ca

CLINICAL CASE: A 69-year-old woman developed choroidal metastasis from a breast carcinoma 2 years after the initial diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy. After treatment with palliative chemotherapy and external radiotherapy, we used fluorescein angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to evaluate the resolution of the serous retinal detachment, as well as a later relapse in the optic nerve.
DISCUSSION: OCT is useful in the follow-up of choroidal metastasis after treatment. However, OCT imaging is limited by the initial choroidal location of metastasis. The autofluorescence can

BACKGROUND: Breast surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and modified radical mastectomy (MRM) may cause long-term side effects such as decreased muscle strength, pulmonary function, cardio-respiratory fitness (CRF), altered body fat distribution and poor sleep quality. These short- and long-term repercussions have an enormous effect on physical functioning in this population. The goal of this research was to determine the effect of a multi-component exercise program on functional performance in breast cancer survivors.
METHODS: In this research, 132 women with breast cancer were selected based on

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the Indian female population. LABC and metastatic breast cancer are the most common stages at presentation in most low-resource countries. Although the incidence of LABC has decreased significantly in countries with enhanced resources thanks to widespread education and screening programs, it remains a daily encounter for surgeons and oncologists in low-resource countries. Neoadjuvant therapy has been studied widely for the treatment of LABC and is followed by locoregional therapy.
OBJECTIVES: As per our hospital data, breast canc

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common malignancy in Mexican women. A set of histopathological markers has been established to guide BCa diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Nevertheless, in only a few Mexican health services, such as that of the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA for its acronym in Spanish), are these markers commonly employed for assessing BCa. The aim of this study was to explore the association of Ki67, TP53, HER2/neu, estrogenic receptors (ERs) and progesterone receptors (PRs) with BCa risk factors.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Identifying the risk factors of recurrence of breast cancer is important for both the physician and patient. Analysis of the first recurrence may lead to an inaccurate evaluation of the factor's effects because it does not completely reflect the history of the disease and may result in the loss of valuable information. The present study aimed to determine the factors that influence breast cancer recurrence and to estimate disease-free survival, adjusting for multiple metastases in breast cancer patients.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Patients were selected from a longitudinal
