A rare complication (appendiceal perforation with meconium peritonitis) was observed in a second trimester fetus affected by nonimmune fetal hydrops due to parvovirus B-19 infection. The complication is not considered specific to this or any other etiology for hydrops, which is highly heterogeneous; rather it is an expression of the fragility and friability of edematous tissues.

Seven cases of neonatal ascites are presented. The commonest cause is obstructive uropathy from posterior urethral valves which was present in four patients. Two infants had septicaemia and meconium peritonitis was found in the seventh case. Radiological evaluation often revealed the anatomic lesion. The mortality rate was 100%.

A symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum (MD) may manifest as an intestinal obstruction secondary to a volvulus. We describe a case of a meconium-impacted MD associated with inflammatory adhesions to adjacent viscera that presented as an intestinal obstruction in a 4-h-old infant secondary to an ileal volvulus with resultant infarction of the diverticulum and ileal segment.

Colonic atresia is a very rare cause of intestinal obstruction, and surgical management is the mainstay of therapy. A case of congenital colonic atresia is reported in a full-term neonate who presented with delayed passage of meconium, abdominal distention and bilious vomiting. Histological examination of the placental membranes of 3 of 4 infants with gastroschisis revealed peculiar vacuolar change of the cytoplasm of the amniotic epithelial cells. No storage material was demonstrated by special stains or electron microscopic study. This vacuolar change is different from other amniotic cell abnormalities, such as those related to meconium staining.

Intestinal atresia and hirschsprung disease are two common causes of bowel obstruction in neonates; simultaneous occurrence is rare. This report delineates a 36-week newborn with ileal atresia and total colonic hirschsprung who was referred to our unit due to failure of meconium passage during the first 48 h after birth.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a rare fat tissue inflammation of the newborn. Risk factors include cord prolapse, perinatal asphyxia, therapeutic hypothermia, meconium aspiration, and sepsis. When present, hypercalcemia comes with lethargy, hypotonia, irritability, vomiting, polyuria, polydipsia, constipation, and dehydration. Kidney injury must be avoided. SCFN is often completely autoresolutive.

We captured a <1-d-old male elk calf (Cervus canadensis) with a shortened neck. Postmortem examination revealed trauma, meconium aspiration syndrome, and cervical vertebral malformation (partial fusion and narrowed disc spaces). This observation is novel in a wild elk calf, although the gross lesions resembled complex vertebral malformation in neonatal cattle.

Apple peel atresia is a special form of intestinal atresia with absence of mesentery. It is most likely due to an intrauterine intestinal vascular accident and has been described with other anomalies. Meconium ileus can compromise blood supply causing intestinal atresia. Ten percent of all newborns require resuscitation at birth. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program establishes the authoritative technique of newborn resuscitation. Errors continue to occur that are related to the use of unskilled resuscitators; intubation; inadequate suctioning of meconium; and the postresuscitation problems of hypoglycemia, hypocarbia, and hypotension. Specific recommendations are offered to avoid these pitfalls of neonatal resuscitation.

A distinct vacuolar change in the amniotic epithelium has been reported in association with gastroschisis. Ultrastructural examination of the placenta from a case with gastroschisis demonstrated numerous lipid droplets in the epithelial cells. The epithelial cells were otherwise intact and did not appear degenerated. The appearance of the lipid was different from meconium in macrophages in the underlying chorion.

Meconium pseudocyst formation secondary to antenatal perforation is well described. We present a preterm infant who had intra-abdominal pseudocyst formation following postnatal intestinal perforation secondary to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and secondarily leading to extra-abdominal collar stud abscess. This is new face of NEC and this presentation has not been reported earlier.
