Autobiographical memory following weight gain in adult patients with Anorexia Nervosa: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) show overgeneralization of memory (OGM) when generating autobiographical episodes related to food and body shape. These memories are central for the construction of a coherent self-concept, interpersonal relationships, and problem-solving abilities. The current study aims to investigate changes in autobiographical memory following weight gain. METHODS: OGM was assessed with an adapted version of the Autobiographical Memory Test including food-, body-, depression-related, and neutral cues. N = 41 female patients with AN (28 restricting-, 13 binge

Targeting schema change in social anxiety via autobiographical memory reconstruction.

Negative self-schemas are fundamental to social anxiety disorder and contribute to its persistence, thus understanding how to change schemas is of critical importance. Memory-based interventions and associated theories propose that reconstructing autobiographical memories tethered to schemas with conceptual details that challenge the associated expectations will lead to schema change. Here, we test this proposal in a between-subjects behavioural experiment with undergraduate participants with social anxiety. All participants were asked to recall aversive social memories, evaluated these memori

The precuneus as a central node in declarative memory retrieval.

Both, the hippocampal formation and the neocortex are contributing to declarative memory, but their functional specialization remains unclear. We investigated the differential contribution of both memory systems during free recall of word lists. In total, 21 women and 17 men studied the same list but with the help of different encoding associations. Participants associated the words either sequentially with the previous word on the list, with spatial locations on a well-known path, or with unique autobiographical events. After intensive rehearsal, subjects recalled the words during functional

The effect of increasing state anxiety on autobiographical memory specificity and future thinking.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impairments in the specificity of autobiographical memory (AM) and future thinking are associated with a range of affective and psychopathological states, however, whether these deficits also occur in the context of state anxiety is not well known. We examined the effects of increasing state anxiety on the specificity of AM and future thoughts, as well as whether changes in rumination and executive functioning mediate any observed effects. METHODS: Sixty-four participants (M age = 29.1, SD = 11.5) were randomized to either an anxiety or neutral mood induction and co

A prospective investigation of rumination and executive control in predicting overgeneral autobiographical memory in adolescence.

The CaR-FA-X model (Williams et al., 2007), or capture and rumination (CaR), functional avoidance (FA), and impaired executive control (X), is a model of overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM). Two mechanisms of the model, rumination and executive control, were examined in isolation and in interaction in order to investigate OGM over time. Across two time points, six months apart, a total of 149 adolescents (13-16 years) completed the minimal-instruction autobiographical memory test, a measure of executive control with both emotional and nonemotional stimuli, and measures of brooding rumina

Voluntary and Involuntary Imagery in Social Anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Negative mental imagery is ubiquitous in cognitive models of social anxiety and in the social anxiety literature. Previous research has shown that it is causal of increased anxiety, lower social performance ratings and lower implicit self-esteem. Despite its prevalence, few studies have investigated this imagery directly. AIMS: This study aimed to provide an in-depth analysis of the phenomenology of negative imagery experienced by socially anxious individuals, and to compare recurrent and intrusive images with images deliberately generated by participants during the study. METHOD

5-HT6 Receptor Antagonists: Potential Efficacy for the Treatment of Cognitive Impairment in Schizophrenia.

5-hydroxytryptamine6 receptor (5-HT6R) antagonists have shown efficacy in animal models for cognitive impairment in multiple cognitive domains relevant for schizophrenia. Improvements were found with 5-HT6R antagonists in preclinical tests for episodic memory, social cognition, executive function, working memory and several other tests for both learning and memory. In contrast, there is little evidence for efficacy on attention. It will be interesting to further investigate 5-HT6R antagonists in neurodevelopmental animal models which are based on prenatal exposure to specific environmental ins

Autobiographical age awareness disturbance syndrome in autoimmune limbic encephalitis: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Autobiographical memory is a form of episodic memory characterized by a sense of time and consciousness that enables an individual to subjectively re-experience his or her past. As part of this mental re-enactment, the past is recognized relative to the present. Dysfunction of this memory system may lead to confusion regarding the present perception of time. CASE PRESENTATION: Two Japanese women (42 and 55 years old) temporarily believed they were living in their past during a course of autoimmune limbic encephalitis. Their autobiographical memories and behaviour reflected their s

Autobiographical memory specificity in dissociative identity disorder.

A lack of adequate access to autobiographical knowledge has been related to psychopathology. More specifically, patients suffering from depression or a history of trauma have been found to be characterized by overgeneral memory, in other words, they show a relative difficulty in retrieving a specific event from memory located in time and place. Previous studies of overgeneral memory have not included patients with dissociative disorders. These patients are interesting to consider, as they are hypothesized to have the ability to selectively compartmentalize information linked to negative emotio

Depressive symptoms moderate the effects of a self-discrepancy induction on overgeneral autobiographical memory.

According to the CaRFAX model, rumination is one of the key underlying mechanisms of overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM). The association between rumination and OGM is well established in clinical populations, but this relationship is not robust in nonclinical samples. A series of null findings is reported in the current paper. Additionally we followed up on recent findings suggesting that a state of rumination needs to be active in order to detect a relationship between trait-rumination and OGM. Secondary school students (N= 123) completed questionnaires assessing trait-rumination and d

Arabic verbal fluency in mesial temporal and generalized epilepsy: evidence from letter and category tasks with healthy controls.

INTRODUCTION: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is the most common focal epilepsy, frequently associated with hippocampal sclerosis and cognitive dysfunction extending beyond episodic memory. Verbal fluency, a multidomain task integrating executive and temporal-semantic processes, is particularly sensitive to temporal pathology. This study examined Arabic letter and category fluency in patients with MTLE, generalized epilepsy (GE), and healthy controls (HC), with a focus on semantic categories differing in episodic content. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at King Saud Univer

Shinshu mindful study: can mindfulness training change the retrieval mode of autobiographical memory?

Researchers have suggested that interoception can trigger the retrieval of autobiographical memories or influence the subjective sense of retrieval mode (e.g., involuntary or voluntary). This study examined whether four sessions of mindfulness training, aimed at improving interoceptive processing over eight weeks, can alter autobiographical memory retrieval and perceived retrieval mode in a community sample. 26 participants in the mindfulness group and 30 participants in the waitlist control group completed the study (Mage = 34.80 ± 12.68). In the mindfulness group, participants showed a decre

Can vibratory bilateral stimulation reduce the emotionality and vividness of negative autobiographical memories?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the recommended, evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although the effects of eye movements on the desensitization of traumatic memories have been extensively documented, there are less studies on the effectiveness of vibratory bilateral stimulation (VBS), even though this type of stimulation is often used in clinical practice. In the present study, we tested the effect of VBS on the emotionality and vividness of autobiographical negative memories in healthy participants. After selecting two moderate

Recollection of verbal materials engages the default mode network more strongly than recollection of visual materials: An fMRI meta-analysis.

Functional neuroimaging studies consistently show that episodic recollection engages the default mode network (DMN), yet the extent to which this engagement varies with the representational content of retrieved information remains unclear. The present meta-analysis examined whether recollection of verbal and visual materials differentially recruits the DMN. Twenty-four verbal and 19 visual studies were included; recollection was operationalized using subjective measures, and network correspondence was assessed using the Yeo 17-network parcellation. Both forms of recollection engaged the DMN, b

Autobiographical memory of validating and invalidating consultations is associated with recall capacity for health information.

Managing chronic pain involves cognitive and emotional challenges that may affect treatment adherence. Patients' ability to remember clinician advice is therefore important. Clinician behaviours may influence these processes. To investigate whether recounting autobiographical memories of perceived validating (vs. invalidating) healthcare experiences influences subsequent recall of health-related information in people living with chronic pain, 245 adults with chronic pain (≥3 months) were recruited online. Eligibility criteria included: age ≥ 18 years, fluent in English, no hearing difficulties

Motivational intensity in positive emotion and observation-based false memory: the role of action simulation.

Positive emotion has been linked to increased false memory, yet most research has focused on emotional valence and arousal, leaving the role of emotional motivation unclear. Using an ecologically valid observation-inflation paradigm, the present study examined whether variation in approach-motivated positive emotion relates to action-based false memories arising from observing others' behavior. In Experiment 1, participants were induced into either high or low approach-motivated positive emotional states before completing the task. Both states increased misattributions of observed actions to t

Neural substrates of multidimensional psychological characteristics of remembering episodes with autobiographical significance.

Autobiographic remembering often involves types of constructive processes for psychological experiences and hypothetical scenarios of past events. Previous psychological research revealed a range of phenomenological and functional characteristics associated with recalls of episodes with high autobiographical significance. However, neural bases of such psychological characteristics and their association with memory construction processes remain unclear. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we collected autobiographical episodes from 28 young adults and their extensive metrics of

Racial composition in K-12 schooling and cognitive health of older Black adults.

BackgroundIn the U.S., historical legal and contemporary social segregation results in K-12 school differences based on racial composition. We hypothesize that racial composition of K-12 schools contributes to higher Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementia risk among non-Hispanic Black (NHB) older adults.ObjectiveTo better understand the social determinants of AD, this original research study adopts a life course perspective. Specifically, we investigate associations between K-12 schools' racial composition and later-life cognitive health among U.S.-born and educated NHB older adults.Met

Speech feature identification model for depressed individuals with suicidal ideation based on autobiographical memory.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation in depression is a critical predictor of suicide risk, yet its objective and early identification remains a significant challenge. Current machine learning models often fail to distinguish specific markers of suicidality from the general symptoms of severe depression. This study aimed to develop and validate a multimodal model, integrating vocal features and autobiographical memory, to specifically distinguish depressed patients with suicidal ideation from those without. METHODS: This study enrolled 88 patients with depression, who were divided into three groups
