The trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) is known to include primary afferent neurons of jaw muscle spindles (MS neurons) and periodontal ligament receptors (PL neurons). The aim of this study was to clarify the postnatal development of Vmes neurons by comparing MS neurons with PL neurons using horseradish peroxidase labeling. We measured somal diameter and somal shape of MS and PL neurons in rats from postnatal day (P)7 to P70. No significant changes were seen between postnatal day P7 and P70 in somal diameter or somal shape of MS neurons. Conversely, PL neurons showed a larger somal diame

α-Synuclein is the major protein component of Lewy bodies--the pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Its accumulation into intracellular aggregates is implicated in the process of Lewy body formation. However, its roles in both normal function, and disease, remain controversial. Using a novel model of chronic oxidative stress in cultured dopaminergic and cortical neurons, we report that endogenous α-synuclein is upregulated in response to low dose toxicity. This response is conserved between subpopulations of cortical and dopaminergic neurons, a

We describe a unique case of concomitant presentation of three rare mesencephalic syndromes. A 48-year-old man with an acute stoke was found to have an unusual combination of three rare mesencephalic syndromes after detailed neuro-ophthalmic evaluation: the plus-minus lid syndrome, the vertical one-and-a-half syndrome, and Claude's syndrome. We discuss the clinical and anatomical localization of these syndromes. This was corroborated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which revealed areas of infarction at the thalamo-mesencephalic junction and the right rostral midbrain involving the third ne

Growth-associated protein-43 is typically expressed at high levels in the nervous system during development. In adult animals, its expression is lower, but still observable in brain areas showing structural or functional plasticity. We examined patterns of GAP-43 immunoreactivity in the brain of the bullfrog, an animal whose nervous system undergoes considerable reorganization across metamorphic development and retains a strong capacity for plasticity in adulthood. Immunolabeling was mostly diffuse in hatchling tadpoles, but became progressively more discrete as larval development proceeded. I

We describe three patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis who presented with paroxysmal dysarthria. In one patient, the symptoms were the only manifestation of an acute relapse. In the other two patients, the attacks appeared during the recovery of a brainstem relapse. All three patients had an acute lower midbrain lesion. The location was central in two patients and left paramedian in the other, and probably involving cerebellothalamocortical pathways. Treatment with carbamazepine was effective.

OBJECT: The basal vein of Rosenthal (BV) courses from the premesencephalic cistern, through the ambient cistern, and terminates in the quadrigeminal cistern. The aim of this study was to describe and quantitate the surgical anatomy of this structure and specifically to provide landmarks for identifying this vessel along its course. These data may be of use, for example, to surgeons using subtemporal operative approaches through regions where this vessel is concealed.
METHODS: The authors examined 15 latex-injected adult cadaveric brains (30 sides) to delineate the morphological characteristic

Pharynx and soft palate are muscles for respiration, vocalization, swallowing, and vomiting. In cat, motoneurons innervating pharynx/soft palate are located in the dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus (dgNA) in the medulla oblongata. In cat, dgNA is the only part of nucleus ambiguus that can be distinguished as a separate cell group, which makes it possible to study its afferent input. In two cats, WGA-HRP injections in dgNA and surrounding tegmentum resulted in retrogradely labeled cells at several levels of the neuraxis. In 170 cases anterograde tracers were injected in areas in which the ce

OBJECTIVE: The veins draining the posterior wall of the third ventricle and its adjacent structures and the posterior part of the midbrain have been the most neglected of the intracranial vascular structures in both the anatomic and neurosurgical literature. During our dissections of the pineal region and the quadrigeminal cistern, we did not always encounter topographic anatomy as described in previous articles. The purpose of this study is to describe the topographic anatomy and normal variations of the specific veins that drain the collicular plate and the pineal body and their adjacent str

RATIONALE: Withdrawal from non-contingent exposure to psychostimulants increases the activity of midbrain dopamine cells and impairs the function of impulse-regulating dopamine autoreceptors. It is unclear whether these neuroadaptations play an important role in withdrawal-associated drug seeking.
OBJECTIVES: We determined whether cocaine self-administration modifies the impulse activity of midbrain dopamine neurons and dopamine autoreceptor function, and whether experimentally induced reduction in dopamine cell activity (by autoreceptor activation) could influence drug-seeking behavior.

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is one of the serious neurological complications of alcoholism. This study evaluated magnetic resonance images of sequelae of CPM. Approximately 600 alcoholic patients were examined by a 1.0-T magnetic resonance imaging device, and 11 patients were retrospectively found to have a central pontine lesion, a presumed sequela of CPM. The lesions had various shapes and most were cavitary. In 3 of the 11 patients bilateral symmetrical oval lesions were faintly visible in the middle cerebellar peduncles. These middle cerebellar peduncular lesions were diagnosed as h

Four subtypes of D(1) dopamine receptors are expressed in the brain of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), an elopomorph teleost. To correlate this molecular multiplicity with specific localisation and functions, the distribution of the D(1) receptor transcripts was analysed by in situ hybridisation. The four D(1) receptor transcripts exhibit largely overlapping expression territories. In telencephalon, they are found in the olfactory bulb and the dorsal telencephalon (except its lateral part) but are most abundant in the subpallial areas. More caudally, the entopeduncular nucleus, preoptic

Very little documentation of the neuropathologic changes in Joubert syndrome exists. This paper presents a detailed postmortem neuropathologic study of a clinically and radiographically well-documented case of Joubert syndrome. In addition to aplasia of the cerebellar vermis and fragmentation of the dentate nuclei, there was marked dysplasia of structures at the pontomesencephalic junction and caudal medulla. There was abnormal decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncles and an enlarged iter (rostral 4th ventricle) with elongated tegmental nuclei (including the locus coeruleus). Neurons o

The authors report a rare case of a cystic metastasis in the midbrain that was successfully treated by brachytherapy following stereotactic biopsy and aspiration of the intratumoral cyst. Stereotactic aspiration of cystic lesions can lead to clinical improvement and brachytherapy prevents cyst recurrence. A 46-year-old man was referred to the authors' institution with a 2-month history of a left hemisensory disturbance and a 1-month history of progressive hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a ring-enhancing cystic mass in the midbrain. On the basis of this imaging study, a di

The paralemniscal tegmental area has been determined in the brain of the New World moustached bat, Pteronotus p. parnellii, by electrical microstimulation eliciting echolocation calls and pinna movements. It is located in the dorsal tegmentum rostral and medial to the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and is characterized by medium sized and large neurons. Tracer injections (WGA-HRP) showed that the most intense input to the paralemniscal tegmental area originates in the intermediate and deep layers of the homolateral superior colliculus. The strong projections from the ipsi- and contral

We report a patient with pretectal eyelid lag without retraction. MRI showed high signal abnormality dorsal to the right red nucleus in a region thought responsible for premotor eyelid control. The dissociation of eyelid lag from eyelid retraction in this patient would suggest that these lid signs may have separate neural mechanisms or pathways. We propose that the lesion interrupts inhibitory connections between the vertical gaze center and the central caudal nucleus.

We describe a 34-year-old Japanese woman presenting gait difficulty and Achilles tendon swelling. The patient was diagnosed as having cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) based on the high serum cholestanol level and diminished enzymatic activity of 27-hydroxylase of fibroblasts from her skin. Her clinical presentation was atypical regarding the presence of hemiparkinsonism and absence of apparent cataract, dementia, and cerebellar ataxia. Although MRI studies could not detect any abnormality in the basal ganglia or midbrain, PET analysis using [18F]-6-fluoro-L-dopa revealed reduced uptake of

We report an autopsy case of 66-year-old woman with closed head injury due to a fall from stairs. She had recovered after a half day period of coma following the fall. Severe right peripheral oculomotor nerve palsy was noted from the beginning. MRI demonstrated lesions in the corpus callosum and right midbrain. She had died of suffocation due to sputum impaction after 50 hours after the fall. Autopsy examination revealed traumatic subarachnoidal hemorrhage, partial tearing and petechial hemorrhage of the corpus callosum, and many axonal retraction balls scattered in the cerebral white matter.
