We attempted to study the effect of selenium supplementation upon trace metal metabolism in low-birthweight infants less than 1000 g birthweight. Serum levels of the trace metals copper, zinc, and selenium; and white blood cell glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were measured in conjunction with the trace metals when parenteral nutrition (TPN) was begun (sample A), at the initiation of enteral nutrition (sample B), and when TPN was discontinued (sample C). Two randomly selected groups of infants were evaluated: group S received selenium supplementation (1…

We studied the removal of aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, before and after desferrioxamine B (DFO) administration (2 g intravenously) in two patients with chronic renal failure and Al-related osteopathy. Both patients had 4 peritoneal dialysis exchanges (2 liters each) per day. Blood concentrations of Al increased 413% (patient A) and 190% (patient B) after DFO. Patient B had a 15% increase in Fe; other metals remained unchanged. Dialysate efflux Al concentrations had peak post-DFO increments of 761% and 840% in pat…

Heavy metals including mercury, cadmium, cobalt, and copper (100 microM) exerted an adverse effect on the viability of isolated rat adrenal capsular (zona glomerulosa), adrenal decapsular (fasciculata and reticularis), and Leydig cells of the testis, with mercury being the most potent. Due to the decreased cell viability there was a parallel reduction in corticotropin-stimulated corticosterone production by adrenal decapsular cells and luteinizing hormone-stimulated testosterone production by Leydig cells. The results indicated a direct toxic action of these heavy metals on steroid-producing c…

Extraction of arsenic, mercury, gold, silver, antimony, indium, bismuth, tellurium, cadmium, zinc and copper iodides with methylisobutylketone was examined in the sulfuric acid of concentrations from 0 to 15 normalities. Although, arsenic and zinc iodides were extracted from 6 to 12 normalities, extraction of other metal-iodides were carried out in more wide range of sulfuric acid concentrations almost from 2 to 12 normalities. Iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium iodides, these, being chief biological elements of inorganic substances, were not extracted in the least into methylisobu

Industrialization has led to global environmental pollution, exposing individuals to toxic metals (such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), and chromium (Cr)) on a daily basis. Lifelong exposure to toxic metals, even at low levels, endangers human health due to their accumulation and long biological half-lives. Additionally, some of these metals are classified as proven or probable human carcinogens according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) (Group 1: Cd, As, Ni, Cr; Group 2A: Pb) and/or exhibit hormone-like properties, classifying them…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This article focuses on the effects of six heavy metals on gut microbiota, which plays a key role in human health. Gut microbiota plays a key role in metabolism, immunity, and maintaining homeostasis. Heavy metals can affect microbiota composition and function, with health consequences. Consuming large amounts of heavy metals may have harmful impacts, including alteration in microbial composition and bacterial population changes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six heavy metals-cadmium, chromium (toxic metals), copper, zinc, iron, and selenium (beneficial trace elements)-wer…

Daily use of oral hygiene products (OHPs) contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) can cause acute or long-term intoxication. This study investigated the occurrence and human health risks associated with potentially toxic metals, namely Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Cr, Zn, and Cd, in 55 commonly used OHPs, including dental powders (DP), toothpastes, and mouthwashes (MW), in Nigeria. The types of toothpastes included herbal toothpaste (HT), smokers'/medicated toothpaste (SMT), children's toothpaste (CT), and regular toothpaste (RT). The metal concentrations in the OHPs varied from 4.94 to…

Constructed wetlands (CWs) as the last barrier for ensuring water quality often face the simultaneous occurrence of multiple pollutants such as metals, antibiotics and nutrients. However, the mechanisms by which environmentally relevant concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) influence pollutant removal processes remain poorly understood. In this study, HMs (Zn(II), As(V), and Pb(II)) at environmentally relevant concentrations significantly enhanced doxycycline (DOX) removal and promoted ammonia oxidation in CWs, indicating functional activation rather than inhibition. Mass balance and functional…

OBJECTIVE: To systematically compare circulating concentrations of iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se) between women with spontaneous pregnancy loss (SPL) or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) and pregnant controls.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science from inception to 25th May 2025 for observational studies comparing circulating metal concentrations between women with SPL/RPL and pregnant controls. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using random-effects models. Subgroup, sensitivit

BACKGROUND: Circulating toxic metals have been associated with stroke risk, but whether circulating concentrations reflect their distribution within intracranial thrombi remains unclear. We assessed lead, cadmium, aluminum, and chromium in paired plasma and thrombus samples from patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing mechanical thrombectomy.
METHODS: In this single-center observational study, 35 consecutive patients with large-vessel occlusion treated with mechanical thrombectomy were included. Metal concentrations were measured in paired intracranial thrombi and peripheral plasma sam…

Bryophytes have a strong absorption capacity for heavy metals (HMs). We investigated the physiological responses of the dominant bryophyte Gymnostomum subrigidulum to different levels of HM pollution in a manganese mine waste area, including changes in chlorophyll, malondialdehyde, and metallothioneins (MTs) content, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities. The cellular structure and subcellular distribution of HMs in G. subrigidulum from severely polluted areas were studied using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microsco…

BACKGROUND: Evidence on exposure to metal-vitamin mixtures in relation to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) remains limited. We examined the associations of first-trimester exposure to these mixtures with HDP risk, with stratification by BMI for effect modification analyses.
METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study within a prospective cohort of 2069 pregnant women. First-trimester plasma concentrations of ten metallic elements (manganese, chromium, cobalt, selenium, arsenic, cadmium, lead, thallium, vanadium, nickel) and two vitamins (vitamins B12 and folate) were measured.

Environmental toxicants including heavy metals (lead, cadmium) and phthalate plasticizers (DEHP, DBP, DINP) are ubiquitous contaminants that enter the human body through multiple pathways, accumulate in tissues, and induce multi-organ toxicity. While chelation therapy for heavy-metal poisoning carries significant adverse effects, effective clinical management for phthalate exposure remains limited beyond exposure reduction. We therefore developed a composite probiotic formulation containing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CCFM1019, L. plantarum CCFM259, Limosilactobacillus reuteri CCFM8631, and …

Since the early 1990s, considerable progress has been made in understanding the teratogenic and embryotoxic effects of metals in mammalian systems. The present updated review synthesizes over three decades of research findings, examining the developmental toxicity of metals across four categories: (a) metals of greatest toxicological significance (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and uranium), (b) essential trace metals (chromium, cobalt, manganese, selenium, and zinc), (c) other metals with evident biological interest (nickel and vanadium), and (d) metals of pharmacological interest (aluminum…

Selective removal of dissolved heavy metals from reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) remains a major challenge for inland desalination due to their high ionic strength and electrode fouling in electrochemical systems. Here, we demonstrate a one-step electrografting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) onto glassy carbon in aqueous phosphate electrolyte for simultaneous removal of Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) at ppb levels. Cyclic voltammetry revealed an irreversible EDTA oxidation peak at 1.1 V vs Ag/AgCl, and passivation together with ferri/ferrocyanide probe measurem…
