Anxiety and depression: toward overlapping and distinctive features.

This Special Issue of Cognition and Emotion addresses one of the cardinal concerns of affective science, which is overlapping and distinctive features of anxiety and depression. A central finding in the study of anxiety and depression is that they are moderately highly correlated with each other. This leads us to the question: What is behind this co-occurrence? Possible explanations relate to poor discriminant validity of measures; both emotional states are associated with negative affect; stressful life events; impaired cognitive processes; they share a common biological/genetic diathesis. An attentional scope model of rumination.

Rumination, defined as repetitive thinking about negative information, has been found to lead to serious maladaptive consequences, including longer and more severe episodes of major depression. In this review, we present and discuss research findings motivated by the formulation that individual differences in cognitive processes that control how information is processed influence the likelihood that thoughts will become repetitive and negative. Several studies have demonstrated that a tendency to ruminate (i.e., trait rumination) is related to difficulties updating working memory (WM) and dise

A computerized simulation for investigating gambling behavior during roulette play.

The present paper describes a computerized roulette program for the conducting of psychological research on gambling behavior. The program was designed to simulate an actual roulette game found in casinos and gambling riverboats throughout North America. The roulette program collects detailed trial-by-trial data on player/participant behavior that can easily be transferred into data analysis and graphics programs. This multimedia simulation was designed in the Visual Basic programming language, and it is capable of running on any IBM-compatible personal computer running the Windows 2000 or hig

Phobias and preparedness: the selective, automatic, and encapsulated nature of fear.

We describe evidence for an evolved module for fear elicitation and fear learning with four primary characteristics. First, it is preferentially activated by stimuli related to survival threats in evolutionary history. Thus, fear-relevant stimuli lead to superior conditioning of aversive associations compared with fear-irrelevant stimuli. Second, the module is automatically activated by fear-relevant stimuli, meaning that fear activation occurs before conscious cognitive analysis of the stimulus can occur. Third, the fear module is relatively impenetrable to conscious cognitive control, and fe

Neuropsychiatric disorders of childhood: Tourette's syndrome as a model.

Neuropsychiatric disorders of childhood include conditions such as autism, pervasive developmental disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Tourette's syndrome (TS) of chronic, multiple, motor and vocal tics is a model neuropsychiatric disorder with a childhood onset and long-term, and sometimes life-long, course. Symptoms and signs change during the course of maturation, and include obsessions, compulsions, attentional difficulties and psychological responses to the disability. These clinical features reflect the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. The localiz

Anger: the hidden part of grief.

Anger, under any circumstances, is difficult to experience and understand. When associated with grief, anger seems startling and somewhat inappropriate. Yet the failure to recognize and the inability to work with angry feelings may compromise and inhibit the necessary grieving process. If not confronted directly, anger emerges in a variety of disguises such as disabling illness, maladaptive behavior, and chronic unhappiness. Using numerous case examples, the authors address the role of anger in the grieving process.

[Schizophrenic patients and the emotional climate in the family. Causes, consequences and treatment of intensely expressed emotions of close relatives].

In recent years it has been shown that the course of schizophrenia is influenced by the attitudes and behaviour of the close relatives with whom the schizophrenic person lives. In particular, there is greater risk of relapse if family members show a high degree of criticism, hostility, or emotional over-involvement in relation to the schizophrenic; these attitudes have been described as high expressed emotion (High EE) and are usually assessed by means of the Camberwell family interview. However, as discussed in this paper, there are still many unsettled questions regarding content, validity,

Feeling good? Paths to psychological well-being: The role of social support in a facebook-based online health community.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines how perceived social support within a Facebook-based online health community is associated with psychological well-being and physical activity among women with diabetes. It distinguishes a direct psychological pathway from a sequential behavioural pathway involving self-efficacy and motivation to engage in healthy behaviours. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. METHODS: Data were collected from 103 women with diabetes who participated in the "Slow Diabète" program developed by the French Federation of Diabetes and joined its closed Facebook group. How safe is too safe? A dual-pathway framework for understanding the dark side of psychological safety.

Psychological safety has become one of the most celebrated constructs in organizational behavior, consistently linked to voice, learning, and team effectiveness. This paper challenges the assumption that reducing interpersonal risk is universally beneficial. Psychological safety operates through two competing pathways: one that enables expression and participation, and one that weakens the interpersonal evaluative pressure, self-monitoring, and norm adherence that sustain coordination and performance. This second mechanism is termed the regulatory loss pathway. The pathway operates through thr

The therapeutic relationship mediates the association between affirmative practice and psychological well-being among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer clients.

In this study, we tested a conceptual model through which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) clients' perceptions of their therapists' affirmative practices and the therapeutic relationship (i.e., working alliance and the real relationship) would correlate with psychological well-being. We hypothesized that the therapeutic relationship would mediate the relation between clients' perceptions of their therapists' affirmative practices and psychological well-being while controlling for precounseling distress, client age, client race/ethnicity, number of psychotherapy sessions, and therapist

The association between rheumatoid arthritis and reduced estimated cardiorespiratory fitness is mediated by physical symptoms and negative emotions: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have lower cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) than healthy individuals. We sought to identify variables explaining the association between RA status and reduced CRF. METHODS: RA patients recruited from two Norwegian hospitals and blood donors recruited as controls filled in questionnaires about physical activity, physical symptoms, and psychological factors. Estimated CRF (eCRF) was calculated from non-exercise models. The relationship between RA status and reduced eCRF was explored with structural equation modelling. The latent variables physic

Psychometric evaluation, using Rasch analysis, of the WHOQOL-BREF in heroin-dependent people undergoing methadone maintenance treatment: further item validation.

BACKGROUND: The brief version of World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment (WHOQOL-BREF), a useful outcome measure for clinical decision making, has been evaluated using classical test theory (CTT) for psychometric properties on heroin-dependent patients. However, CTT has a major disadvantage of invalid summated score, and using Rasch models can overcome the shortcoming. The purpose of this study was using Rasch models to evaluate the psychometric properties of the WHOQOL-BREF for heroin-dependent patients, and the hypothesis was that each WHOQOL-BREF domain is unidimensional. Using the Biopsychosocial Model to Guide Patient-Centered Neurological Treatments.

The biopsychosocial model was defined by George L. Engel to propose a holistic approach to patient care. Through this model, physicians can understand patients in their context to aid the development of tailored, individualized treatment plans that consider relevant biological, psychological, and social-cultural-spiritual factors impacting health and longitudinal care. In this article, we advocate for the use of the biopsychosocial model in neurology practice across outpatient and inpatient clinical settings. To do so, we first present the history of the biopsychosocial model, and its relation

The Kessler psychological distress scale: translation and validation of an Arabic version.

BACKGROUND: The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale has been widely used in assessing psychological distress among general and clinical populations from different cultural backgrounds. To our knowledge, however, researchers have not yet validated any translated versions in Arabic. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of Arabic translations of the ten item (K10) and six item (K6) versions among public sector employees in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. METHODS: As part of a larger research project on life satisfaction, researchers collected data from 234 Pa

The contribution of alexithymia, childhood maltreatment, impulsivity, C-reactive protein, lipid profile, and thyroid hormones to aggression and psychological distress (depression and anxiety) in schizophrenia.

There are individual effects of alexithymia, childhood maltreatment, impulsivity, and some biological markers on aggression and psychological distress in schizophrenia. However, the combined effects of these psychological and biological markers have not yet been fully studied. This study therefore aimed to investigate the influence of these psychological and biological markers on aggression and psychological distress (e.g., depression and anxiety) in inpatients with schizophrenia (n = 355). Participants completed self-report and clinician-rated scales, and blood samples were collected. There w

Long-term variability of sleep bruxism and psychological stress in patients with jaw-muscle pain: Report of two longitudinal clinical cases.

Sleep bruxism (SB) and psychological stress are commonly considered as contributing factors in the aetiology of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain. However, the lack of longitudinal studies and fluctuating nature of SB, psychological stress and TMD pain have led to contradictory results regarding the association between the possible aetiological factors and TMD pain. In the present study we investigated the contribution of SB and psychological stress to TMD pain in a longitudinal study of 2 clinical TMD pain cases during a 6-week study protocol. Two female volunteers with clinically diagnos
