Abelmoschus manihot (L.) flowers are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, whereas the roots are often discarded as agricultural waste. The compact cellular and tissue architecture of the roots hinders the release of intracellular metabolites, thus impeding their reutilization. Here, enzyme-assisted ultrasonic extraction was developed to obtain a polysaccharide-rich crude extract from A. manihot roots. Orthogonal optimization identified pH 4.5, a temperature of 60 °C and a cellulase dosage of 6% (w/w) as the optimal extraction conditions, giving an extraction yield of 21.59%. The phenol

Halotolerant strains isolated from extreme environments rely on exopolysaccharides (EPSs) to maintain cellular integrity under high salinity and ensure survival under harsh conditions. Although continuous screening efforts have identified numerous EPS-producing halotolerant strains, research on the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties of their EPSs remains limited. In this study, an EPS-producing strain yielding 2.59 ± 0.15 g/L was isolated from saline soil and identified as Oceanobacillus sp. DT-Z6. The optimal conditions for key fermentation parameters were determined us

Peach pectin is a promising functional polysaccharide, yet the structure-activity associations among its fractions remain poorly defined. Here, four structurally distinct peach pectin fractions, water-soluble (WSP), chelator-soluble (CSP), sodium carbonate-soluble (SSP), and an enzymatically modified fraction (ES) with targeted homogalacturonan fragmentation, were evaluated in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed female mice. Among them, SSP exerted the most comprehensive benefits. Specifically, SSP treatment restored cytokine balance; increased red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels

Inflammation is a fundamental protective response, yet its chronic form drives many non-communicable diseases. Conventional anti-inflammatory drugs carry significant side effects, prompting interest in natural alternatives such as pectin polysaccharides (PPs), which are generally recognized as safe, structurally diverse, and anti-inflammatory in preclinical models. This narrative review offers a comprehensive overview of anti-inflammatory PPs, from sources to functions. We discuss conventional and emerging green methods and their effects on yield, structural integrity, and bioactivity. Anti-in

Galactose, a monosaccharide, plays diverse biological roles in energy production, especially in the glycolysis and glycosylation of proteins and lipids. Galactose metabolism is mediated by the Leloir pathway, which comprises four key enzymes. Following lactose hydrolysis, galactose mutarotase (GALM) catalyzes the anomerization of β-D-galactose to α-D-galactose, providing a substrate for the downstream pathway. In 2019, GALM deficiency was defined as the fourth type of galactosemia. Affected individuals may develop cataracts similar to those observed in individuals with galactokinase deficiency

D-tagatose is a natural low-calorie rare sugar with nearly the same sweet taste as sucrose. It has nutritional and functional properties of great interest for health, such as anti-diabetes, anti-caries, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-hyperlipidemia, anti-aging, improvement of intestinal microflora, etc. The production of D-tagatose from D-galactose catalyzed by an alkali suffers from limited supplies of costly feedstock (i.e., lactose) and high manufacturing costs due to harsh reaction conditions, costly separation, as well as severe degradation and pollution. In this review, we briefly present th
