The Narrative-Emotion Process Coding System 2.0: A multi-methodological approach to identifying and assessing narrative-emotion process markers in psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies suggest that it is not simply the expression of emotion or emotional arousal in session that is important, but rather it is the reflective processing of emergent, adaptive emotions, arising in the context of personal storytelling and/or Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) interventions, that is associated with change. METHOD: To enhance narrative-emotion integration specifically in EFT, Angus and Greenberg originally identified a set of eight clinically derived narrative-emotion integration markers were originally identified for the implementation of process-guiding therap

The effects of process-focused versus experience-focused narratives in a breast cancer treatment decision task.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of patient narratives that discuss decision processes versus patient experiences on decisions about treatments for early stage breast cancer. METHODS: We recruited 300 women with no previous history of breast cancer to imagine that they had been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and to choose between mastectomy and lumpectomy with radiation. Before learning about their treatment options, participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions with videotaped stories from fictitious cancer survivors, using a 2 (content: experience versus process) ×

Test balloons? Small signs of big events: a qualitative study on circumstances facilitating adults' awareness of children's first signs of sexual abuse.

This research examined caregivers' awareness of children's first signs of sexual abuse. The aim was to explore circumstances that facilitate adults' awareness of first signs in everyday natural settings. Data were obtained from a Norwegian university hospital's outpatient specialty mental health clinic. Included were all cases (N=20) referred during a two-year period for treatment after the disclosure of sexual abuse that was reported to the police and child protective service. Nonabusing caregivers' awareness of first signs were recollected in hindsight as part of therapy. Qualitative analysi

Collaboration among nurse practitioners and registered nurses in outpatient oncology settings in Canada.

AIM: This article is a report on a case study that described and analysed the collaborative process among nurse practitioners and registered nurses in oncology outpatient settings to understand and improve collaborative practice among nurses. BACKGROUND: Changes in the health system have created new models of care delivery, such as collaborative nursing teams. This has resulted in the increased opportunity for enhanced collaboration among nurse practitioners and registered nurses. The study was guided by Corser's Model of Collaborative Nurse-Physician Interactions (1998). DESIGN: Embedded si

Narrative ability in children with cerebral palsy.

In a previous study a group of children with cerebral palsy (CP) were found to have considerable difficulties with narratives, performing several standard deviations below the criteria for the Information score of the Bus Story Test (BST). To examine in depth the performance of children with CP and a control group with typically developing (TD) children on a narrative task, in order to search for possible underlying causes to the problems in the CP group. The results of the BST for 10 children with CP, mean age 7;11 years, were investigated. The analysis of the BST was supplemented with the us

Listeners' attitudes: speech supplementation strategies for improving effectiveness of speakers with mixed dysarthria as a result of motor neuron disease.

This study examined unfamiliar and familiar listener attitudes towards the use of combined alphabet-topic cues and a control condition (habitual speech with no cues) associated with the speech of three individuals with severe mixed dysarthria. Two listener groups (N = 36) were shown experimentally imposed visual images of the combined alphabet-topic cue strategy in conjunction with recorded auditory presentations with the habitual speech of three individuals with mixed dysarthria. Using a 7-point Likert scale, listeners were asked to rate how effective they thought the speakers communicated; h

Dissociative experience and cultural neuroscience: narrative, metaphor and mechanism.

Approaches to trance and possession in anthropology have tended to use outmoded models drawn from psychodynamic theory or treated such dissociative phenomena as purely discursive processes of attributing action and experience to agencies other than the self. Within psychology and psychiatry, understanding of dissociative disorders has been hindered by polemical "either/or" arguments: either dissociative disorders are real, spontaneous alterations in brain states that reflect basic neurobiological phenomena, or they are imaginary, socially constructed role performances dictated by interpersonal

Living with chronic illness in the family setting.

This paper discusses the ways in which family practices and family relationships interact with the demands of diet-related chronic illness. It uses a study that examined the management of food and diet in families where one member had been diagnosed with one of two medical conditions: coronary heart disease (CHD) and coeliac disease (CD). The data revealed a propensity for family members, especially female partners/wives, to see the tasks and activities related to the special diet in terms of family practices rather than individual (patients') responsibilities. These family practices could be

"Frog, where are you?" Narratives in children with specific language impairment, early focal brain injury, and Williams syndrome.

In this cross-population study, we use narratives as a context to investigate language development in children from 4 to 12 years of age from three experimental groups: children with early unilateral focal brain damage (FL; N=52); children with specific language impairment (SLI; N=44); children with Williams syndrome (WMS; N=36), and typically developing controls. We compare the developmental trajectories of these groups in the following domains: morphological errors, use of complex syntax, complexity of narrative structure, and types and frequency of evaluative devices. For the children with

Through children's own lenses: assessing risky play tendencies via a tablet-based interface.

INTRODUCTION: Risky play is increasingly recognized as a developmentally significant form of play that supports children's physical competence, emotional regulation, and risk-management skills, yet capturing children's own tendencies toward such play remains methodologically challenging. This study addresses this gap by introducing a tablet-based, pictorial assessment tool [the Digitized Willingness to Risk in Play Scale-Pictorial (d-WRiPS-P)] designed to assess preschool children's risky play tendencies through their own lenses. METHODS: A total of 198 Turkish children aged 5-6 years partici

Intervention Deploying an Autonomous Robot Promotes Eye Gaze Abilities of Autistic Children: Comparison With a Human-Based Intervention.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Autistic children have difficulties establishing and maintaining eye contact. Previous interventions for eye gaze rely on human professionals, who may be too costly or even inaccessible to many families of autistic children. These challenges have led to the application of technology, such as social robots, the use of which in autism therapy is theory-driven. Thus, the present study examined whether robot-based intervention (RBI) and human-based intervention (HBI) improved autistic children's eye gaze. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial study, 121 Chinese-speaking

Utility of biomarkers in the postmortem diagnosis of fatal Anaphylaxis: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing anaphylactic deaths is a challenging task for forensic pathologists. Although serum tryptase is considered to be a reliable biomarker, there are limitations to it. Thus, there is an urgent need to explore various other potential biomarkers which could be of diagnostic value, along with Tryptase, to diagnose anaphylactic shock at autopsy. AIM: We want to systematically review the accuracy of newer postmortem biomarkers for anaphylaxis, such as chymase or eosinophilic cationic protein. Before embarking on this project, we intend to assess the feasibility of conducting sys

Black Women in Medical Education Publishing: Bibliometric and Testimonio Accounts Using Intersectionality Methodology.

BACKGROUND: Black women in academic medicine experience racial and gender discrimination, all while being tasked with improving a flawed system. Representation of Black women in medicine remains low, yet they bear the burden of fostering diversity and mentoring trainees, exacerbating their minority tax and emotional labor, and negatively impacting career progression. OBJECTIVE: To complement qualitative accounts of Black women authors in the medical education literature with a quantitative account of their representation. We used statistical modeling to estimate the representation of Black wo

"The show must go on": Aftermath of Covid-19 on anesthesiology residency programs.

COVID-19 has caused tectonic changes in the personal and professional lives of anesthesiologists and, among several aspects, anesthesiology residency and sub-specialty training has also undergone an unforeseen overhaul. We read the articles published on the impact of COVID-19 on training of anesthesiologists and set out to extract and narrate all the significant observations. At the outset, we begin by explaining how this pandemic posed a threat to the safety of the residents and mitigating measures like PPE and barriers that have now become 'the new normal'. Sub-specialties like critical care
