Facial palsy following cochlear implantation.

Owing to its anatomical location, the facial nerve (FN) is at risk of damage during cochlear implantation, especially during posterior tympanotomy. The aim of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the risk of FN palsy following cochlear implantation surgery via mastoidectomy and posterior tympanotomy approach (facial recess). This is a retrospective study. The data bank of patients who received a cochlear implant between 2000 and 2012 was analyzed. 3403 surgeries were done during this period. Records of the patients who had suffered from FN palsy were evaluated and the type of FN palsy, the s

Quantitative EEG and prediction of outcome in neonatal encephalopathy: a review.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is an important biomarker for neonatal encephalopathy (NE) and has significant predictive value for brain injury and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Quantitative analysis of EEG involves the representation of complex EEG data in an objective, reproducible and scalable manner. Quantitative EEG (qEEG) can be derived from both a limited channel EEG (as available during amplitude integrated EEG) and multi-channel conventional EEG. It has the potential to enable bedside clinicians to monitor and evaluate details of cortical function without the necessity of continuous expert

Cholinesterase deficiency and anesthesia management: Clinical challenges and coping strategies.

Cholinesterase deficiency is a rare genetic disorder that impairs the activity of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. It causes severe perioperative risks due to prolonged neuromuscular blockade induced by succinylcholine and ester-based anesthetics, and may lead to life-threatening complications such as respiratory depression and cardiovascular instability, thus requiring personalized anesthesia protocols for affected patients. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to synthesize the pathophysiology, genetic basis, and pharmacokinetic impacts of cholinesterase deficiency

Negative myoclonus. An overview of its clinical features, pathophysiological mechanisms, and management.

Negative myoclonus (NM) is an unspecific motor disorder that can characterize a variety of neurological conditions. From the clinical point of view, NM appears as a shock-like involuntary jerky movement caused by a sudden, brief interruption of muscle activity. Asterixis is a type of NM that occurs typically in toxic-metabolic encephalopathies. NM of epileptic nature, or epileptic negative myoclonus (ENM), is defined as an interruption of tonic muscle activity, which is time-locked to an epileptic EEG abnormality, without evidence of an antecedent positive myoclonia in the agonist-antagonist m

Disorders of Neuronal Migration/Organization Convey the Highest Risk of Neonatal Onset Epilepsy Compared With Other Congenital Brain Malformations.

BACKGROUND: Although seizures in neonates are common and often due to acute brain injury, 10-15% are unprovoked from congenital brain malformations. A better understanding of the risk of neonatal-onset epilepsy by the type of brain malformation is essential for counseling and monitoring. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we evaluated 132 neonates with congenital brain malformations and their risk of neonatal-onset epilepsy. Malformations were classified into one of five categories based on imaging patterns on prenatal or postnatal imaging. Infants were monitored with continuous vid
