Making the Surgical Safety Checklist Even Safer: A Team Timeout Checklist to Improve Information Exchange and Interprofessional Communication Before Skin Incision.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization surgical safety checklist (WHO SSC) provides a standardized framework for preoperative safety procedures. However, studies have revealed substantial variation in adherence, with items being skipped or misunderstood and nurses likely to be less involved than other operating room (OR) professional groups. We introduce a 16-item team timeout checklist (TTOC) that clarifies and adds safety-critical items to the existing WHO before skin incision timeout and is led by nurses to improve information exchange, closed-loop communication, and encouraging particip

Health IT Implementation and the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Clinician-IT Dynamics: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the rapid development and implementation of health ITs to support health care delivery. Health IT implementation is difficult at the best of times, due to complex sociotechnical challenges that vary across contexts and settings; however, it is currently unclear how the pandemic impacted health IT implementation processes. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of the pandemic on health IT implementation processes, including pre- and postimplementation phases, and identify the sociotechnical factors that shaped health IT implementation dur

The Language of Bias: Labeling and Its Impact on Emergency Department Patients.

Stigmatizing language is prevalent in emergency nursing practice and has significant implications for patient care, clinical judgment, and health equity. Labels such as "drug-seeker," "frequent flyer," and "non-compliant" are often applied without comprehensive assessment and can lead to delayed treatment, inadequate pain management, misdiagnosis, and erosion of trust between patients and emergency clinicians. These terms disproportionately affect marginalized populations, including individuals with substance use disorders, individuals with mental health conditions, racialized minorities, and

Stopping syphilis on the streets: embedding point of care testing within a street outreach nursing service.

Background Nationally, the increase in syphilis notifications over recent years has demonstrated persistent bridging across to wider populations, particularly women of reproductive age. Populations experiencing adverse social determinants, caught in a cycle of marginalisation and social exclusion through mental ill-health, alcohol and drug misuse, and economic and housing stress, have increasingly become susceptible. Methods The aim of this pilot was to develop and implement a protocol for delivering syphilis point of care testing (POCT) through a street-based nursing outreach program, specifi

Improving the health and well-being of adolescent boys.

Adolescent men are at risk of having significant unmet health care needs. Like adolescent girls, they have complex health care needs and are more likely than younger children to be to be uninsured. They are less likely than women and other age groups to seek medical attention from traditional sources of care. Because of inadequate youth-oriented services, as well as teens' developmental stage, they have a tendency to receive care that is brief and problem oriented [20]. Such care is not likely to address complex problems that may be related to risk behaviors. Adolescent boys are also more conc

The unique health needs of young women: application for occupational health professionals.

This article presents some alternate views on how young women maintain health and how occupational health nurses can intervene with illness. These interventions are based on relational theories that address the importance of healthy connections for health and growth, and propose disconnections as what (Miller & Stiver, 1977): underlies many of the problems common to women in particular, including depression, various forms of anxiety, eating problems, and so-called personality disorders." Transition from home care to nursing home: unmet needs in a home- and community-based program for older adults.

A major effort is under way nationally to shift long-term care services from institutional to home- and community-based settings. This article employs quantitative and qualitative methods to identify unmet needs of consumers who transition from a statewide home- and community-based service program for older adults to long-term nursing home residence. Administrative data, care manager notes, and focus group discussions identified program service gaps that inadequately accommodated acute health problems, mental health issues, and stressed family caregivers; additional unmet needs highlighted an

Consumers living with psychosis: Perspectives on sexuality.

Mental health clinicians work within a recovery framework that is rights based and emphasizes positive and respectful approaches to working with mental health consumers. Mental health nurses' practice is also predicated on holism and inclusiveness, yet consumers' sexuality is sometimes neglected and rights in this area overlooked. Also overlooked is sexuality as an area for investigation, particularly from a consumer perspective, even though it constitutes part of consumers' broader remit of sexual health. This paper reports findings from a case study where consumers were asked about their abi

Neonatal intensive care: communication and attachment.

Birth has traditionally been recognized as a family-centred event where immediate exposure to the infant occurs and where the family begins, through direct contact, touch and voice, to form an attachment to the infant. In high-risk pregnancy and delivery, medical and technological advances distance the family from the birth event. This article describes some aspects of a research project with identified factors that facilitate and hinder family and mother attachment to the infant during periods of separation subsequent to premature delivery or other problems which require management in a neona

A Success Academy for Increasing Tribal College Transfer Student Success in Nursing Degree Completion: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Background: A health-care workforce that mirrors the identities of patients is critical for achieving positive outcomes. To support a highly qualified and diverse nursing workforce, the Caring for Our Own Program (CO-OP) aims to increase the enrollment and retention of Indigenous students in nursing programs. Poor retention rates for Tribal-college transfer students (35.9%) presented a barrier to success for students best placed to enhance the nursing workforce in Tribal communities. Methods: CO-OP piloted the Success Academy, a pre-entry immersion program for Tribal college transfer students,

[Prevention and treatment of male cancers: a comprehensive approach].

Male cancers will be a public health issue in 2025. Their treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach in which nurses play a pivotal role. Appropriate screening and awareness campaigns can improve patient prognosis and quality of life. Smoking cessation, testicular self-examination, and proper personal hygiene are key messages in clinical practice that should be communicated to patients.

Scaling up integrated management of childhood illness to the national level: achievements and challenges in Peru.

This paper presents the first published report of a national-level effort to implement the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) strategy at scale. IMCI was introduced in Peru in late 1996, the early implementation phase started in 1997, with the expansion phase starting in 1998. Here we report on a retrospective evaluation designed to describe and analyze the process of taking IMCI to scale in Peru, conducted as one of five studies within the Multi-Country Evaluation of IMCI Effectiveness, Cost and Impact (MCE) coordinated by the World Health Organization. Utah healthcare system watches over Olympians and spectators.

For the first time in Olympic history, a single organization was tapped to provide medical services when Intermountain Health Care (IHC), Salt Lake City, was named for the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Utah. IHC, a charitable, community owned, integrated, not-for-profit healthcare system serving patients in Utah and Idaho, spent four years developing and implementing a plan to deliver medical services to both Olympians and spectators. Nearly 350 IHC doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other professionals donated their services for the Olympics without compensation as part of their

Impact of an antimicrobial stewardship program with multidisciplinary cooperation in a community public teaching hospital in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Reports of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) in community hospitals are limited, with the major focus on specific agents, small settings, or short time periods. Here we present the outcomes of cost control, consumption restraint, and quality of care after a 3-year multidisciplinary ASP in a 415-bed community public teaching hospital. METHODS: Three strategies for improving antimicrobial stewardship were implemented: education, clinical pharmacists-based intervention, and regular outcome announcement. The steering panel of the program was a committee composed of infection s
