COVID-19 Pandemic: Analysis of Health Effects on Emergency Service Nursing Workers via a Qualitative Approach.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, longstanding issues involving nursing work, which has always involved significant risks of illness and infection, were intensified. It is necessary to acknowledge the risks and nurses' perceptions about the risks qualitatively during the period of the health crisis. The aim of this study was to examine the health repercussions perceived by nursing workers in emergency services during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. This was a qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The settings of the study were emergency services with a national scope; t

A Technology Intervention for Nurses Engaged in Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections account for 40% of healthcare-acquired infections. This study explored the addition of cloud-based software technology to an established nursing quality improvement program to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Unit-based nurse champions evaluated peers' evidence-based catheter-associated urinary tract infection prevention practices using manual, paper-based feedback. That process achieved reduced rates of catheter-associated urinary tract infection over 18 months. However, it was resource intensive. Cloud-based software technology

The integration of BRCA testing into oncology clinics.

PURPOSE: The PARP inhibitor, Olaparib, is approved for women with BRCA-mutated ovarian cancer. Therefore there is an urgent need to test patients and obtain results in time to influence treatment. Models of BRCA testing, such as the mainstreaming oncogenetic pathway, involving oncology health professionals are being used. The authors report on the establishment of the extended role of the clinical nurse specialist in consenting women for BRCA testing in routine gynaecology-oncology clinics using the mainstreaming model. METHODS: Nurses undertook generic consent training and specific counselli

Factors affecting the administration of analgesia to patients following repair of a fractured hip.

Fracture of the neck of femur, or hip, has become common in older females and the resulting pain is often a factor in inhibiting early mobilization following surgical repair. Since the administration of analgesia is dependant upon decision-making of the nurse, this study concentrated on what influences nurses in the administration of analgesia to patients following surgical repair of a fractured hip. A review of the literature identifies the main influencing factors as nurses' lack of knowledge and the drug prescription, and suggests that education is the key enabler. However, much of this res

Nurses' Experiences of Intrahospital Patient Transfer in a University Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Intrahospital transfer is a fundamental component of critical care. However, the clinical instability of critically ill patients, their need for continuous monitoring and their dependence on advanced life-support equipment may pose various patient-safety risks during intrahospital transfer. AIM: To explore the intrahospital patient transfer experiences of nurses working in a university hospital. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive study design was used. The study was conducted with 22 nurses working in the adult intensive care units and inpatient wards of a university hospita

Ebola at the National Institutes of Health: Perspectives From Critical Care Nurses.

Infectious disease events were in the headlines in 2014. West Africa experienced the worst Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak ever recorded. The world was stunned when the deadly virus began to spread to other countries. The health care system in the United States responded by designating specialized centers to care for patients with EVD. All health care workers must understand the isolation processes involved in caring for these patients. Using personal protective equipment is imperative and requires adjustments in how care is provided. Staffing patterns must be altered to provide safe care,

Successful programs have been implemented across the continuum of care. These programs include educational initiatives that increased both the number of nurses with BSN degrees and specialty certifications and also the number of patient-focused initiatives, such as a reduction in central line infection rates, an increase in hand-washing compliance, and a

Narrative review comparing palliative care models in primary and community care settings: For a better integration of nurses' activities and skills.

The World Health Organization highlights significant disparities in access to palliative care (PC), especially in primary and community care. In France, ASALEE is an innovative national association that brings nurses and general practitioners in primary and community care. Initially created to address the support needs of patients living with chronic diseases, the nurses' roles have expanded to include PC. However, despite the growing role of such interprofessional models, research on PC nurses' activities and skills in primary and community care are underdeveloped. To identify, categorize, co

Implementation and experience of an innovative smart patient care system: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although a patient care system may help nurses handle patients' requests or provide timely assistance to those in need, there are a number of barriers faced by nurses in handling alarms. METHODS: The aim of the study was to describe the implementation and experience of an innovative smart patient care system (SPCS). This study applied a cross-sectional descriptive design. We recruited 82 nurses from a medical center in Taiwan, with 25 nurses from a ward that had introduced an SPCS and 57 nurses from wards that used the traditional patient care system (TPCS). The major advantages o

OBJECTIVES: This project aimed to enhance the assessment and management of acute pain after breast cancer surgery in a large tertiary hospital in China. METHODS: This project followed the seven steps of the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework. Through a baseline audit, the practice gap was identified. The JBI Getting Research into Practice (JBI GRiP) tool was also used to analyze ba

Re-engineering the hospital: a house without rooms.

Re-engineering of health care systems is defined, and the experience with re-engineering at a medical center is discussed. Re-engineering is a business concept that involves totally redesigning work processes to achieve much higher efficiencies and quality; it should not be confused with cost cutting, downsizing, and continuous improvement. Re-engineering seeks to combine multiple jobs into one, empower workers and make them more accountable, sequence the elements of work more naturally, create greater flexibility, and blur or remove organizational boundaries. Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal of Role Definition and Responsibility Within the Concussion Management Team for Secondary Schools.

BACKGROUND: Sports- and recreation-related concussions impact the cognitive function of secondary school students during the recovery process. They can cause symptoms such as headache, difficulty concentrating, and memory impairment, which pose a challenge for students during the return to learn (RTL) after injury. Concussion management teams (CMTs) assist the student in managing symptoms and develop an individualized RTL process; however, the ideal composition of professionals involved in the CMT has not been fully evaluated. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to assess current resear
