Association between sleep patterns and alcohol use disorders in workers.

Alcohol use among workers that is intended to aid sleep may lead to alcohol use disorders. This study aimed to explore the association between sleep patterns and alcohol use disorders in workers. Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020 were used for this study. We included only workers aged 19 years and older. The final analysis comprised 11,972 respondents (6,472 male and 5,500 female). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between sleep patterns and alcohol use disorders. Workers wit

A Risk Correlative Model for Sleep Disorders in Chinese Older Adults Based on Blood Micronutrient Levels: A Matched Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: The physical abilities of older adults decline with age, making them more susceptible to micronutrient deficiency, which may affect their sleep quality. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to construct a risk correlative model for sleep disorders in Chinese older adults based on blood micronutrient levels. METHODS: In this matched case-control study, we recruited 124 participants with sleep disorders and 124 matched controls from the Tianjin Elderly Nutrition and Cognition cohort in China. Micronutrient levels in whole blood were measured using the dried blood spot technique. We compare

The Neurology and Psychopathology of Pica.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pica is defined by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th edition (DSM 5) as the ongoing ingestion of materials with no nutritive or food value. More specifically such ingestions must be unremitting for at least 1 month and occur at a developmentally inconsistent age for such behavior. This article reviews the association of pica with pregnancy, micronutrient deficiencies, psychiatric disorders, dementia, and developmental disorders with emphasis on autism spectrum disorders (ASD). RECENT FINDINGS: Some variants of non-nutritive consum

Small and Large Intestine (I): Malabsorption of Nutrients.

Numerous disorders can alter the physiological mechanisms that guarantee proper digestion and absorption of nutrients (macro- and micronutrients), leading to a wide variety of symptoms and nutritional consequences. Malabsorption can be caused by many diseases of the small intestine, as well as by diseases of the pancreas, liver, biliary tract, and stomach. This article provides an overview of pathophysiologic mechanisms that lead to symptoms or complications of maldigestion (defined as the defective intraluminal hydrolysis of nutrients) or malabsorption (defined as defective mucosal absorption

[Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction].

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a syndrome characterized by the presence of recurrent episodes of clinical intestinal obstruction in the absence of obstructive lesions. Although this syndrome is rare, it causes a high morbidity. It is caused by a disturbance of the intestinal motility, that results in a failure of the progression of the intestinal content. Basically, the failure of the intestinal motility is a consequence of muscular disorder, neurological disorder or both. Usually, CIPO is secondary to other systemic disease; however, in the last years, many cases of primary C

Interplay of Mitochondrial Dynamics, Nutrition, and Vitamins: Evidence From Experimental and Human Studies With Implications for Women's Health.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is a key modifiable factor supporting mitochondrial health and is essential for ovarian function and women's health across the life course. From menarche to menopause, mitochondrial efficiency underpins physiological balance. The menopausal transition is particularly critical, as hormonal and neuroendocrine changes are associated with impaired mitochondrial function and increased risk of age-related disorders. AIM: This review aimed to systematically review and synthesize the available evidence on mitochondrial function across in vitro, animal, and human studies and to e

A Closer Look at Paediatric Sleep: Sleep Health and Sleep Behavioural Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Adequate sleep is crucial for healthy development, contributing significantly to physical and mental well-being. While research on paediatric sleep is expanding, there remain several open questions. This narrative review provides an overview of our current knowledge on paediatric sleep health and identifies literature gaps, considering factors such as age, gender, cultural differences, and the interplay between sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and mental health. It also considers sleep health in the more specific group of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. By viewing paediatric sl

Early nutrition programming of long-term health.

Increasing evidence from the EU Project EARNEST and many other investigators demonstrates that early nutrition and lifestyle have long-term effects on later health and the risk of common non-communicable diseases (known as 'developmental programming'). Because of the increasing public health importance and the transgenerational nature of the problem, obesity and associated disorders are the focus of the new EU funded project 'EarlyNutrition'. Currently, three key hypotheses have been defined: the fuel mediated 'in utero' hypothesis suggests that intrauterine exposure to an excess of fuels, mos

Avoidant-Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Is Common in Adults With Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome and Is Associated With Malnutrition.

BACKGROUND: In cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS), approximately 30% of patients remain symptomatic between episodes. We hypothesized that avoidance of presumed food triggers contributes to avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and is associated with nutritional consequences in adults with CVS. METHODS: We prospectively studied adults diagnosed with CVS who completed the Nine-Item ARFID Screen (NIAS), Eating Disorder Questionnaire (EDE-QS), Food Security Questionnaire, and the VioScreen food frequency questionnaire. Nutrition status was assessed by a registered dietitian nutritionist

Eating Disorders in the Primary Care Setting.

Eating disorders are mental health disorders with complicating medical, psychiatric, and nutritional comorbidities. Common eating disorder diagnoses include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, and other specified feeding or eating disorder. Unspecified feeding or eating disorder is most applicable in brief acute care settings. Eating disorders occur across age, gender, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic variables. Effective assessment, intervention, and collaborative treatment are needed to decrease risk factors and increase oppor

Parenteral nutrition in short bowel syndrome patients, regardless of its duration, increases serum proinflammatory cytokines.

Short bowel syndrome is a severe malabsorption disorder, and prolonged parenteral nutrition is essential for survival in some cases. Among the undesirable effects of long-term parenteral nutrition is an increase in proinflammatory cytokines. The aim of the present study was to measure the serum levels of interleukin-6, interleukin-10, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and transforming growth factor beta, in patients with short bowel syndrome on cyclic parenteral nutrition and patients who had previously received but no longer require parenteral nutrition. The study was cross-sectional and observati
