Quantitative visual pathway abnormalities predict visual field defects in patients with pituitary adenomas: a diffusion spectrum imaging study.

OBJECTIVES: This study was to investigate clinical applicability of diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) for quantitative detection of visual pathway abnormalities to predict the degree of visual field defects (VFD) in patients with pituitary adenomas. METHODS: Sixty-five patients with pituitary adenomas and 33 healthy controls underwent conventional MRI and DSI scanning that allowed high-angular-resolution fiber tracking. Optic chiasmal compression and VFD were confirmed in all patients via radiological and neuro-ophthalmological examinations. Quantitative assessments of chiasmal lift, VFD, and

Medical backgrounders: glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Currently, glaucoma is diagnosed as a progressive optic neuropathy with characteristic optic disc and nerve fiber layer damage, usually associated with loss of visual function. The intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most important risk factor for the disease, although a significant proportion of patients do not have elevated IOP. Other risk factors include older age, African descent, myopia and family history of the disease. The ophthalmoscopic examination of the optic disc is essential to identify the signs of glaucomatous opt

Development of a multichannel filterscope system for two-dimensional plasma imaging in a magnetic mirror.

We have developed a multichannel filterscope system for time-resolved two-dimensional (2D) plasma emission imaging in the KAIST magnetic mirror device. The system consists of three compact in-vessel receiver modules with slit-based pinhole-camera geometry, an optical feedthrough coupled to fiber bundles, and external silicon photomultiplier-based detection units. The receiver modules, separated by 120°, provide 21 line-integrated viewing chords across the plasma cross section. Plasma emission is spatially selected by a precision slit, collimated by lens optics, spectrally filtered by an interc

Oligodendrocyte Piezo2 is a regulator of age-dependent myelin integrity and dysregulated in multiple sclerosis.

Studies on the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo2 largely focus on its role in the peripheral nervous system, particularly in touch and pain sensation. Here, we investigate Piezo2 function in the anterior visual pathway of the central nervous system with a focus on oligodendrocyte (OL) biology and myelin integrity. Using single-nucleus RNA sequencing, we identify Piezo2 expression in late differentiated OLs of the murine optic nerve, with minor expression in retinal ganglion cells. OL-specific Piezo2 deficiency results in age-dependent motor impairment and selective disruption of myelin compa

Salvage Radiosurgery for Optic Nerve Sheath Meningioma.

Optic nerve sheath meningiomas (ONSMs) are rare and benign tumors that affect the optic nerve. Although surgical decompression may be used for large tumors that cause mass effect on the surrounding structures, the mainstay of treatment is radiotherapy. We report the case of a 54-year-old female patient who presented with progressive vision loss due to a recurrent right ONSM despite fractionated radiotherapy eight years prior and the subsequent interval regression of the tumor. The optical coherence tomography at the time of recurrence revealed thinning of the right retinal nerve fiber layer. S

Involvement of the optic nerve in mutated CSF1R-induced hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids (HDLS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by cerebral white matter degeneration and caused by mutations in the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) gene. Involvement of the optic nerves in hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 30-year-old Chinese woman with HDLS, who carried a heterozygous c.2345 G > A (p.782Arg > His) mutation in exon 18 of CSF1R. She developed a gradual decline in motor ability, as well as cognitive and visual function, over

The optic radiation and the cerebellar peduncles in adolescents with first-admission schizophrenia--a diffusion tensor imaging study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies have found gray matter alterations in the cerebellum and in the visual system in both adults and adolescents with schizophrenia. The present study was conducted to investigate whether white matter tracts associated with these regions are also affected in the early stages of the disorder. METHODS: Using a 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner and fiber tracking, the optic radiations and the middle cerebellar peduncles were examined in 13 adolescents with first-admission schizophrenia and 13 healthy controls matched for age, gender, school t

The early structural and functional disturbances of chronic open-angle glaucoma. Robert N. Shaffer lecture.

The earliest psychophysical disturbances in color vision, foveal sensitivity, spatial and temporal contrast sensitivity precede nerve fiber bundle defects of the visual field in glaucoma. Optic nervehead changes such as enlargement of the physiological cup, as well as retinal nerve fiber layer losses, also precede visual field defects. Which of these is the earliest change has not yet been recognized. Evidence for more than one mechanism of damage in glaucoma is also presented.

Lab-on-Fiber Operando Deciphering of a MOF Electrocatalyst.

Despite the great success in deploying metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as efficient electrocatalysts, the low adoption of operando methods hinders the understanding of underlying mechanism. By leveraging the subtle refractive index evolution, including both the real and the imaginary parts, an entirely new concept of a lab-on-fiber operando method and its feasibility for "pristine-immersion-operando-post analysis" of electrocatalyts are demonstrated. Concurrent collection of absorption spectra and surface plasmon resonance is achieved by engineering fiber-optic waveguides to simultaneously ind

Ultra-Sensitive Isopropanol Biochemical Gas Sensor (Bio-Sniffer) for Monitoring of Human Volatiles.

Our groups have previously developed a biochemical gas sensor to measure isopropanol (IPA) in exhaled air and have applied it for breath IPA investigation in healthy subjects and diabetes patients. In this study, the original bio-sniffer was modified with a series of components that improved the limit of detection (LOD). First, the modified IPA bio-sniffer used a C8855-type photomultiplier tube (PMT) that performed well in the photon sensitivity at the peak wavelength of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) fluorescence. Second, the multi-core bifurcated optical fiber, which incorporated 3

An open-source control system for in vivo fluorescence measurements from deep-brain structures.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial photometry through chronically implanted optical fibers is a widely adopted technique for measuring signals from fluorescent probes in deep-brain structures. The recent proliferation of bright, photo-stable, and specific genetically encoded fluorescent reporters for calcium and for other neuromodulators has greatly increased the utility and popularity of this technique. NEW METHOD: Here we describe an open-source, cost-effective, microcontroller-based solution for controlling optical components in an intracranial photometry system and processing the resulting signal. …

Pathogenesis of osteochondrosis juvenilis Scheuermann.

In osteochondrosis juvenilis Scheuermann, foci of various sizes in the cartilaginous end plates of the vertebral bodies display a loosening or complete interruption of the collagen fibers. These findings, together with an alteration and occasional absence of the growth zone, may result in the typical deformation of the vertebral bodies. Electron micrographs of the areas with optically absent collagen fibers reveal collagen fibrils. They are arranged in an irregular pattern. We conclude that a disturbance of collagen or ground substance biosynthesis is of importance in the pathogenesis of juven
