Copper Pyrithione, [Cu(PyS)2] has shown excellent biological activity against cancer cells and bacterial cells, however, it has extremely low aqueous solubility, limiting its applicability. Herein, we report a series of PEG-substituted pyrithione copper(II) complexes with significantly increased aqueous solubility. While long PEG chains lead to a decrease in bioactivity, the addition of short PEG chains leads to improved aqueous solubility with retention of activity. One novel complex, [Cu(PyS1)2], has particularly impressive anticancer activity, surpassing that of the parent complex.

Copper pyrithione (CuPT) is used as a co-biocide in new antifouling paints but its toxicity remains little known. To compare the toxicity of copper-based compounds, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae were exposed for 8-day to CuPT and CuSO4 at equivalent copper concentrations. CuPT exposure led to the greatest accumulation of Cu in larvae. Exposure to 10 µg.L-1 CuPT induced 99% larval mortality but only 4% for CuSO4-exposed larvae. The larval development and growth were affected by CuPT (from 0.5 µg.L-1 Cu) but not by CuSO4. Lipid peroxidation was not induced by either contaminant. The

Medullary sponge kidney (MSK) is a rare renal malformation characterized by precalyceal tubular ectasia of the renal collecting ducts that clinically manifests as recurrent renal stones, distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA), osteoporosis, and nephrocalcinosis. This study aims to investigate the photodynamic therapy (PDT) effects on MeWo (human melanoma cells) and HaCaT (normal human keratinocyte cells) by light stimulation of different concentrations of Zinc (II)-tetra-tert-butyl-phthalocyaninato (ZnPc). Reported herein is the single-step construction of an anti-configured deoxypropionate motif by syndiospecific propylene oligomerization catalyzed by a Cs -symmetric zirconocene complex. After oligomerization, oxidation of the oligomers by oxygen afforded oligopropylene alcohols in a single step. This strategy was applied to the single-step preparation of rel-(2R,4S,6R,8S)-2,4,6,8-tetramethylundecan-1-ol, the racemic mixture of the synthetic fragment of the cuticular hydrocarbons isolated from the cane beetle Antitrogus parvulus.
