Examining Routine Pediatric Vaccination Availability in Community Pharmacies in Washington State.

To address diminishing pediatric vaccination rates resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act allows pharmacists, technicians, and pharmacy interns to administer any vaccine that the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines recommend for all patients aged 3 years and older. A survey was conducted to evaluate the role of pharmacy personnel in the community setting providing immunizations for the pediatric patients. Sixty-seven pharmacies were contacted in a state where pharmacists are allowed to administer vaccinations

Cross-clade protection against human H5N1 isolates by a clade 2.3.4.4b HA mRNA vaccine in mice.

The recent spread of clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) viruses into mammals, despite limited human infections to date, has raised serious public health concerns and highlights the need for rapidly deployable vaccines, such as mRNA-based platforms, to strengthen pandemic preparedness. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of an mRNA vaccine encoding the HA of NIID-002, a WHO-recommended H5 candidate vaccine virus (CVV) derived from A/Ezo red fox/Hokkaido/1/2022 (clade 2.3.4.4b) against A/Texas/37/2024 (TX37; clade 2.3.4.4b) and A/Cambodia/2311257/2023 (Cam23; clade 2.…

A six-proline stabilized trimeric spike DNA vaccine induces robust immunity and protects against SARS-CoV-2 delta challenge in K18-hACE2 transgenic mice.

Despite the widespread deployment of vaccines, SARS-CoV-2 continues to pose a serious global health challenge due to the emergence of vaccine-resistant variants. DNA vaccines represent a critical platform for pandemic preparedness due to their ability to stimulate both arms of the immune response, their superior temperature stability, and their rapid scalability. In this study, we describe the immunogenicity and protective efficiency of a DNA vaccine encoding a six-proline stabilized trimeric spike protein (pSTDSpike) designed against the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant. The pSTDSpike encodes Delta S…

School infection control strategy during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: Nationwide trends (2022-2024).

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic required schools, densely populated settings with diverse age groups, to dynamically adjust infection control strategies in response to evolving public health challenges. Despite substantial documentation of such strategies in healthcare facilities, detailed data from school environments remain limited during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A nationwide web-based survey was conducted using a random sample of schools (N = 854) to examine changes in infection control strategies, the implementation of school events, and decis

Implementation of an Immunoassay Based on the MVA-T7pol-Expression System for Rapid Identification of Immunogenic SARS-CoV-2 Antigens: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

The emergence of hitherto unknown viral pathogens presents a great challenge for researchers to develop effective therapeutics and vaccines within a short time to avoid an uncontrolled global spread, as seen during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, rapid and simple methods to identify immunogenic antigens as potential therapeutical targets are urgently needed for a better pandemic preparedness. To address this problem, we chose the well-characterized Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA)-T7pol expression system to establish a workflow to identify immunogens when a new…

Influenza A(H5N1) Virus Subunit Vaccine Administered with CaPNP Adjuvant Induce High Virus Neutralization Antibody Titers in Mice.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus continues to spread globally in domestic poultry with sporadic transmission to humans. The possibility for its rapid transmission to humans raised global fears for the virus to gain capacity for human-to-human transmission to start a future pandemic. Through direct contact with infected poultry, it caused the largest number of reported cases of severe disease and death in humans of any avian influenza strains. For pandemic preparedness, use of safe and effective vaccine adjuvants and delivery systems to improve vaccine efficacy are considered im…

Invisible Threats, Concrete Actions: Analyzing and Enhancing OSHA's Infectious Disease Framework.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates employers provide a workplace "free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm" to employees; however, those regulations do not include workplace-acquired infectious diseases. This article examines federal and state regulations specific to workplace infectious disease exposures, highlighting their insufficiencies. The regulatory framework for occupational exposures to infectious diseases within United States workplaces is examined using specific criteria: (1) the intended sc

A conditional threat-regulation model: When deliberative processing of ongoing threat reduces intergroup bias.

Ongoing societal threats such as war, civil unrest, and pandemics heighten intergroup bias by inducing cognitive rigidity and suppressing complex reasoning. Yet most bias-reduction strategies require conditions that threat itself undermines, including direct engagement with outgroups. We propose a conditional threat-regulation model that specifies when and for whom threat-induced cognitive rigidity can be regulated in the face of threat. Across three experiments conducted during real societal crises in Israel, Hong Kong SAR, and the United States, we test whether deliberative processing of ong

Cancer center leadership during large-scale crises: a practical evidence-informed framework with perspectives from the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Cancer centers are disproportionately vulnerable to large-scale crises-including pandemics, armed conflicts, cyberattacks, and supply chain failures-and while COVID-19 generated valuable crisis guidance for oncology, frameworks tailored to the specific structural vulnerabilities of GCC cancer systems have been limited. The Gulf Cooperation Council region illustrates this gap with immediate, real-time urgency. The ongoing 2026 regional military escalation has reportedly disrupted Strait of Hormuz shipping and Gulf air cargo routes-critical corridors for pharmaceutical cold-chain logistics acros

Advancing Laboratory Diagnostics for Future Pandemics: Challenges and Innovations.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, major epidemics and pandemics such as SARS, H1N1pdm09, Ebola, and COVID-19 have repeatedly challenged global systems of disease diagnostics and control. These crises exposed the weaknesses of traditional diagnostic models, including long turnaround times, uneven resource distribution, and supply chain bottlenecks. As a result, there is an urgent need for more advanced diagnostic technologies and integrated diagnostics strategies. Our review summarizes key lessons learned from four recent major outbreaks and highlights advances in diagnostic technologies
