The in vivo mechanisms whereby systemic alpha- and beta-adrenergic stimulation exert opposing effects on renal water excretion are reviewed. An extrarenal mechanism is suggested since the effect of intravenous infusion of norepinephrine or isoproterenol on water excretion cannot be mimicked by the intrarenal administration of these agents. A ROLE OF VASOPRESSIN IS IMPLICATED SINCE NEITHER MAN NOR DOG WITHOUT A PITUITARY SOURCE OF VASOPRESSIN DEMONSTRATE THE SAME EFFECT OF CATECHOLAMINES ON WATER EXCRETION AS OBSERVED IN INTACT MAN AND DOG. Evidence also is presented that systemic alpha- and be

We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterize the cortical and autonomic nervous system activity associated with affective information processing in PTSD. Participants were service members assigned to one of two groups based on whether they met (n = 36) or did not meet (n = 48) the DSM-V criteria for PTSD. MEG recordings were performed while participants viewed and rated for pleasantness images with positive affective valence (set 1) and neutral images (set 2). Higher amplitudes of the early (75 ms-150 ms) neuromagnetic evoked responses to positive vs. neutral images indicated that the

Youth who are raised in emotionally abusive families are more likely to have poor mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety. How … emotional abuse and youth internalizing symptoms. Emotional abuse was also associated with blunted parasympathetic nervous system activity (i.e. less vagal withdrawal than average). In sum, emotional abuse is a potent risk factor for youth internalizing symptoms, and this link may be mediated via dysregulation in physiological stress response systems. Primary prevention of chi …

Ascl1 (Mash1), a bHLH transcription factor, is widely expressed by neuronal progenitors. The gene plays a key role in the differentiation of the autonomic nervous system, i.e., sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric ganglia; all of which are derived from neural crest cells. In Ascl1-null mutants, defective development of these ganglia is induced. The differentiation of neuroendocrine cells, including the carotid body, ultimobranchial body and thyroid C cells, the neuroepithelial body in the lung, and the adrenal medulla, is also controlled by Ascl1. Although the carotid body glomus cells an

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is the most prevalent member of the nerve growth factor family. Since its discovery in 1978, this enigmatic molecule has spawned more than 27,000 publications, most of which are focused on neurological disorders. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is indispensable during embryogenesis and postnatally for the normal development and function of both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that brain-derived neurotrophic factor likewise plays crucial roles in a variety of other biological functions independently of s

Recent evidence suggests that specific families of homeodomain transcription factors control the generation and survival of distinct neuronal types. We had previously characterized the homeobox gene Phox2a, which is expressed in differentiating neurons of the central and peripheral autonomic nervous system as well as in motor nuclei of the hindbrain. Targeted deletion of the Phox2a gene affects part of the structures in which it is expressed: the locus coeruleus, visceral sensory and parasympathetic ganglia and, as we show here, the nuclei of the IIIrd and IVth cranial nerves. We now report on

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a reliable reflection of the many physiological factors modulating the normal rhythm of the heart. In fact, they provide a powerful means of observing the interplay between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. It shows that the structure generating the signal is not only simply linear, but also involves nonlinear contributions. Heart rate (HR) is a nonstationary signal; its variation may contain indicators of current disease, or warnings about impending cardiac diseases. The indicators may be present at all times or may occur at random-during cer…

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) implicates autonomic dysregulation of the lower esophageal sphincter tone. Our goal is to investigate whether this dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) function observed in isolated GERD cases can affect other systems, such as cardiovascular regulation.
METHODS: Twenty-five participants were included in the study, 11 patients with isolated GERD and 14 controls. All patients and 7 controls responded to a COMposite Autonomic Symptoms Score 31 (COMPASS 31) questionnaire and underwent functional explorations

Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a neuromodulation tool used for treating several clinical disorders, including insomnia, anxiety, and depression. More recently, a limited number of studies have examined CES for altering affect, physiology, and behavior in healthy, non-clinical samples. The physiological, neurochemical, and metabolic mechanisms underlying CES effects are currently unknown. Computational modeling suggests that electrical current administered with CES at the earlobes can reach cortical and subcortical regions at very low intensities associated with subthreshold neurom

Acupuncture, as a typical representative of non-drug therapy, regulates central functions by activating the peripheral nervous system, and has become a leading hotspot in the field of neuromodulation. Focusing on the body-brain mechanism of acupuncture effects, this article systematically reviews the cutting-edge interdisciplinary advancements in acupuncture research and modern life sciences from 3 dimensions: neuro-immune anti-inflammatory actions, target organ function regulation, and "one acupoint affecting multiple organs" intervention for comorbidities. To analyze the key issues, clarify

INTRODUCTION: Patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) are at high risk for developing atrial fibrillation (AF) due to significantly impaired cardiac pump function, heightened sympathetic nervous system activity and the frequent coexistence of cardiovascular comorbidities such as hypertension and coronary artery disease. Reduced heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of autonomic nervous system balance, is an independent predictor of AF. Recently, ultra-short-term HRV (usHRV) has emerged as a promisi

PURPOSE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with autonomic dysregulation characterized by heightened sympathetic nervous system and reduced parasympathetic nervous system activity that contribute to increased cardiovascular risk. Prior work has shown that individuals with PTSD have augmented increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) during sympathoexcitatory stressors and increased vascular alpha-1 adrenergic receptor sensitivity. However, sympathetic transduction, defined as the blood pressure (BP) response to MSNA, has not been previously examined in PTSD. We inve…

Tumor neuron hijack is a malignant adaptive program whereby tumor cells recruit, physically engage and functionally reprogram the peripheral and central nervous system within the local microenvironment and host macroenvironment; this process not only exploits neuro-immune regulatory machineries, neural endocrine signaling, and nutrient supply for sustaining tumor growth, invasion, metastasis, immune escape and treatment resistance, but also closely involves the induction and amplification of cancer-associated pain, a common and debilitating manifestation of the host's pathological response to

AIMS: Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (II/R) injury predominantly causes acute lung injury (ALI), and in severe instances, acute respiratory distress syndrome, both associated with high mortality. Electroacupuncture (EA) excels in regulating autonomic nervous system balance and safeguarding organ function. This study delved into EA's impacts and mechanisms on II/R-induced ALI.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A rat II/R model was created by occluding the superior mesenteric artery for 1 h followed by reperfusion, with EA stimulation applied 30 min before reperfusion. Vagotomy and chemical sympathectomy e

OBJECTIVES: The pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis (AR) may involve dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Salivary fluid flow and salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) secretion are able to reflect the activity of parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS), respectively. The study aims to address the ANS profile in children with newly diagnosed AR by measuring the salivary secretion pattern.
METHODS: We recruited thirty-three children with newly diagnosed AR and thirty-one age- and sex-matched healthy children as control. Saliva samples were collected in the morning and t

Over the last several decades, there has been an explosion of articles on acupuncture, including studies that have begun to explore mechanisms underlying its analgesic and cardiovascular actions. Modulation of cardiovascular function is most effective during manual and low-frequency, low-intensity electroacupuncture (EA) at a select set of acupoints situated along meridians located over deep somatic nerves on the upper and lower extremities. Stimulation at these acupoints activates underlying sensory neural pathways that project to a number of regions in the central nervous system (CNS) that u

CONTEXT: Muscarinic receptors mediate a variety of cellular responses to acetylcholine, including inhibition of adenylate cyclase, breakdown of phosphoinositide and modulation of ion channels. These receptors are relatively abundant in the central nervous system and peripheral parasympathetic nervous system. Many cells express a mixture of muscarinic receptor transcripts. Changes in muscarinic M(2) and M(3) receptor mRNA levels in response to agonist treatment have been reported in cerebellar granule cells, Chinese hamster ovary cells, lymphocytes and in the human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY…
