UNLABELLED: The effects of maternal magnesium sulphate treatment on neonatal mineral status and parathyroid hormone secretory response were studied in 8 exposed and 27 control preterm infants during the first 2 wk of life. Antenatal magnesium sulphate resulted in hypermagnesaemia during the first 3-7 d of life without affecting other serum mineral concentrations.
CONCLUSION: Early hypermagnesaemia was associated with hypercalciuria during the first 3 d and parathyroid hormone suppression up to the age of 2 wk in the exposed infants.

STUDY AIM: The aim of this study was to report a series of 80 patients treated by unilateral neck exploration for a sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Between April 1992 and November 1998, 80 patients (65 women and 15 men, mean age: 63.5 years) with a single gland enlargement localized by ultrasonography, were operated on through a short unilateral neck incision, under general anesthesia in 72 cases and local in eight cases. Children and adults who are severely burned develop magnesium(Mg) depletion, hypocalcemia, hypoparathyroidism and renal resistance to the administration of exogenous parathyroid hormone(PTH). PTH-related protein (PTHrP) is a paracrine/autocrine factor produced in most cell types in the body. Its functions include the regulation of cell cycle, of differentiation, of apoptosis, and of developmental events. One of the cells which produces PTHrP is the pancreatic beta cell. We have previously described a transgenic mouse model of targeted overexpression of PTHrP in the beta cell, the RIP-PTHrP mouse. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) injected peripherally did not interfere with the development of experimental ulcers. Conversely, when PTH was administered i.c.v. the development of ulcers was significantly inhibited. The gastric secretory volume and acid output were also reduced. The possibility is discussed that this antisecretory activity of PTH may be due to a direct effect at the CNS level.
