Pathology of the optic nerve injury.

UNLABELLED: The optic nerve injury is produced by damaging the optic nerve within a craniocerebral trauma. The anatomo-pathology and the pathology of posttraumatic visual impairments are fundamental data for the therapeutic indications. The microscopic examination reveals only the particular cases of very serious or severe extensive lesions. Damage to the vessels of the optic nerve, damage and break of the optical fibers are responsible for immediate visual impairments and secondary hematomas and edemas involving. The factors for the late appearance of visual impairments are numerous and often…

Fetus-in-fetu. Imaging and pathology.

Fetus-in-fetu (FIF), also known as endoparasitic twin, is a form of asymmetric fetal duplication in which the abnormal developing embryo parasitizes the normal co-twin by attaching internally. Here, we report a case of FIF presented as an intra-abdominal cystic mass, which was first detected during an antenatal ultrasound examination of a 32-year-old Saudi mother. At 34 weeks and 4 days of gestation, she had spontaneous labor and delivered a baby boy. The x-ray and CT examination of the baby boy clearly suggested the presence of limbs, vertebral column, and anomalous blood supply to the mass.

[Pathology diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies].

The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies represent a group ofimmunologically mediated diseases characterized by inflammation of skeletal muscle potentially leading to irreversible damage. On the basis of clinical, histological and immunological features dermatomyositis, polymyositis and sporadic inclusion-body myositis are recognized as separate entities. A definitive diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies requires detailed histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron-microscopic analysis of adequate muscle biopsy sample. However, in spite of thorough morphological anal

Gastrointestinal neuromuscular pathology in alpers disease.

Alpers disease is a recessive mitochondrial disorder caused by mutations in POLG1 and characterized primarily by progressive neurological and hepatic degeneration. Intestinal dysmotility is a frequent symptom, but it is often overshadowed by other clinical manifestations. The onset and progression of Alpers disease vary; however, most patients die during childhood, often before a specific diagnosis has been established. The gastrointestinal neuromuscular pathology of 4 patients, obtained largely from postmortem specimens, showed distinctive eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules in a subset of ente…

Update on the pathology of dystonia.

Dystonia is a clinical syndrome with sustained muscle contraction, twisting, and abnormal postures. A number of different genetic forms have been defined, but most cases are sporadic in nature and of uncertain cause. Relatively few cases of dystonia have been studied pathologically. In primary dystonias, where dystonia is the main symptom, most reports describe little or no detectable neuropathology, although changes in brainstem neurons have been described in some cases. Secondary dystonias are associated with degenerative or destructive diseases of the nervous system; the pathology may be lo…

Ovarian pathology for the pediatric urologist.

OBJECTIVES: To report the breadth of ovarian conditions that pediatric urologists may encounter through diverse referral patterns. METHODS: Two regional pediatric centers reviewed cases from 2000 to 2010, yielding 13 females with gonad-related conditions. RESULTS: Six of 13 patients (46%) were referred for a presumed urological condition that was later discovered to be of ovarian origin or were already known to the urology clinic for a congenital urological anomaly. Six patients had tumor markers drawn, all of which were normal. Median age was 11.2 years. The most common presenting symptoms

Endovascular management of ascending aortic pathology.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular treatment of the ascending aorta is particularly challenging because of the anatomic features of this aortic segment. Only patients without connective tissue disorders, clinically relevant aortic regurgitation or stenosis, or concomitant coronary artery disease can be considered for an endovascular procedure. We report our results in a series of patients with aneurysms or intramural hematoma, penetrating ulcers, or floating thrombus who were scheduled for stent grafting. METHODS: Only patients with ascending aortic pathology who were unfit for open surgery were treate…

[Current aspects of liver allograft pathology].

Liver allograft pathology continues to play an important role in the diagnosis and management of complications in the course of liver transplantation. This article summarizes important patterns of liver damage and also considers new aspects of transplant pathology from the literature. In the context of transplant rejection, late cellular rejection has aroused new interest. Histopathological changes in late rejection differ from acute cellular rejection and there seem to be similarities to de novo autoimmune hepatitis and idiopathic post-transplant hepatitis. Central perivenulitis is a typical …

Unilateral pathology associated with bilateral etiologies.

Hormonal fluctutaions affect not only a woman's reproductive system but surprisingly they have a strong influence on the oral cavity also. These changes are not necessarily the result of direct hormonal action on the tissue, but are perhaps best explained as the effects of the local factors (e.g. plaque on tissues exacerbated by hormonal activity). One such case of pubertal induced gingival enlargement associated with chronic generalized periodontitis caused by the combined influence of hormones and the habit of unilateral mastication is presented here. A 14-year-old girl reported with a compl

Thermographic investigation of osseous stress pathology.

The debilitating pathology of stress fracture accounts for 10% of all athletic injuries[2], with prevalence as high as 20% in modern military basic training cohorts [3]. Increasing concerns surrounding adverse effects of radiology [5], combined with the 12.5% contribution of diagnostic imaging to Australian Medicare benefits paid in 2009-10 [6], have prompted the search for alternative/adjunct electronic decision support systems[7]. Within conducive physioanatomic milieu, thermal infrared imaging (TIRI) may feasibly be used to remotely detect and topographically map diagnostically useful signs…

Acute appendicitis with unusual dual pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum is a rare congenital abnormality arising due to the persistence of the vitelline duct in 1-3% of the population. Clinical presentation is varied and includes rectal bleeding, intestinal obstruction, diverticulitis and ulceration; therefore diagnosis can be difficult. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of acute appendicitis complicated by persistent post operative small bowel obstruction. Further surgical examination of the bowel revealed an non-inflamed, inverted Meckel's diverticulum causing intussusception. DISCUSSION: Intestinal obstruction in patie

Soft tissue pathology of the ankle.

Derangements of the soft tissues within the ankle joint are associated with a wide variety of pathophysiology, and typically can be classified as secondary to traumatic injury, rheumatic disease, or congenital lesions. Patients often present with persistent pain, swelling, and limitations on function, usually focused on the anterior aspect of the joint. Evaluation should be guided by a detailed history and physical examination, followed by clinical, laboratory, and imaging studies as indicated. The pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of these conditions will be the focus of this article

The molecular pathology of cutaneous melanoma.

Cutaneous melanoma is a highly aggressive cancer with still limited, but increasingly efficacious, standard treatment options. Recent preclinical and clinical findings support the notion that cutaneous melanoma is not one malignant disorder but rather a family of distinct molecular diseases. Incorporation of genetic signatures into the conventional histopathological classification of melanoma already has great implications for the management of cutaneous melanoma. Herein, we review our rapidly growing understanding of the molecular biology of cutaneous melanoma, including the pathogenic roles
