An Avian-Inspired Computational Model Driven by Texture-Color Prioritization Strategies in Visual Processing.

Birds have evolved distinctive visual processing strategies to adapt to complex natural environments. Pigeons can discriminate visual objects using multiple cues, including local texture, color, and shape. However, natural objects contain these cues simultaneously, and it remains unclear how the pigeon visual system balances these visual features when they co-occur. Whether such biological feature-prioritization principles can inform computational recognition models also remains unknown. Here, we combined behavioral delayed matching-to-sample tasks, in vivo electrophysiological recordings from

Intact priming of patterns despite impaired memory.

The priming of patterns was examined in normal control subjects (NCS) and in the amnesic patient H.M., whose anterograde amnesia followed bilateral medial temporal-lobe excision 33 years earlier. Despite H.M.'s impaired recognition of the patterns, he demonstrated a pattern priming effect equivalent in magnitude to that of the NCS. The results demonstrated that intact priming with novel, nonverbal material can occur despite severe amnesia. Pattern priming may reflect adaptive visual processes involved in learning novel perceptual organizations of known visual codes, such as letters, words, sha

Functional Organization of the Perirhinal Cortex in Natural Scene Processing and Memory.

The perirhinal cortex (PRC) has long been implicated in object perception and recognition memory; however, its role in processing complex natural scenes and its internal functional organization are not well understood. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between object- and scene-related visual feature (faces, bodies, and place) representations in PRC and the visual cortex, and the spatial pattern within PRC for visual processing and memory. Utilizing fMRI data from a continuous recognition task involving natural scenes (from the Natural Scenes Dataset), we first quantified

Left dominance for language perception starts in the extrastriate cortex: An ERP and sLORETA study.

While it is well known that the left hemisphere is more efficient than the right in most tasks involving perception of speech stimuli, the neurophysiological pathways leading to these lateralised performance differences are as yet rather unclear. In particular, the question whether language lateralisation depends on semantic processing or is already evident in early perceptual stimulus processing has not been answered unequivocally. In the present study, we therefore recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) during tachistoscopic presentation of horizontally or vertically presented verbal stimu

Visual impairments in dementia with Lewy bodies and posterior cortical atrophy.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA), the visual variant of Alzheimer's disease, are neurodegenerative diseases that present with progressive deterioration in visual perception. However, little is known about the precise nature underlying the complex visual deficits associated with both conditions. The present study compared DLB, PCA, and healthy control participants, in four visual tasks designed to measure the efficiency of the visual system at different levels of processing. In ascending order of complexity there were tasks of visual acuity, line orientation,

Course of pattern-reversed visual evoked cortical potentials in 30 eyes after bony orbital decompression in dysthyroid optic neuropathy.

AIM: To investigate optic nerve function using the pattern-reversed visual evoked cortical potentials (VECP) before and after bony orbital decompression in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) due to Graves' disease. METHODS: A total of 30 eyes of 15 patients (n=14 female) were observed over 30 ± 13 months after bony three-wall orbital decompression. We examined visual acuity (VA), VECP P100 amplitudes and latencies, as well as proptosis using Hertel's exophthalmometry. RESULTS: Mean logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) VA increased, statistically significantly, by 2.4 lines du

Monocular signals in human lateral geniculate nucleus reflect the Craik-Cornsweet-O'Brien effect.

The human visual system has a remarkable ability to accurately estimate the relative brightness of adjacent objects despite large variations in illumination. However, the lightness of two identical equiluminant gray regions can appear quite different when a light-dark luminance transition falls between them. This illusory brightness "filling-in" phenomenon, the Craik-Cornsweet-O'Brien (CCOB) illusion, exposes fundamental assumptions made by the visual system in estimating lightness, but its neural basis remains unclear. While the responses of high-level visual cortex can be correlated with per

Neuronal correlates of colour-graphemic synaesthesia: a fMRI study.

Synaesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which specific events in one sensory modality induce experiences in another. In colour-graphemic synaesthesia, subjects report colour experiences induced by written letters. Our subjects displayed this type of synaesthesia, as verified by a test of the consistency of the perceptual associations over time, and had no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders. We investigated the hypothesis that the synaesthetic colour experience is accompanied by an activation of the human colour area (V4/V8) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). W

A double dissociation between sensitivity to changes in object identity and object orientation in the ventral and dorsal visual streams: a human fMRI study.

We used an event-related fMR-adaptation paradigm to investigate changes in BOLD activity in the dorsal and ventral visual streams as a function of object identity and object orientation. Participants viewed successive paired images of real-world, graspable objects, separated by a visual mask. The second image of each pair was either: (i) the same as the first image, (ii) different only in identity, (iii) different only in orientation, or (iv) different in both identity and orientation. A region in the parieto-occipital cortex (dorsal stream) showed a selective increase in BOLD activity with ch

Visually evoked gamma responses in the human brain are enhanced during voluntary hyperventilation.

Hypocapnia induced by hyperventilation (HV) has powerful effects on neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission. We have studied the effect of hyperventilation on the phase-locked oscillatory components of the evoked responses in the human brain. We recorded visually evoked magnetoencephalographic responses before, during, and after voluntary hyperventilation to pattern-reversal checkerboard stimuli. Gamma-band (30-45 Hz) responses phase-locked to the stimuli were generated in the occipital visual cortex. A wavelet-based time-frequency analysis revealed that the gamma responses increased d

Magnetic coil suppression of visual perception at an extracalcarine site.

Perception of extrafoveal visual targets can be suppressed by magnetic stimulation over the occipital lobes, but the site of interference for this and similar phenomena has not been well defined. We modified a previously used technique to determine the locus of magnetic activation. Using butterfly stimulus coils of different sizes and electric field profiles, we determined a scalp position of minimum threshold and a level of stimulator output that produced 50% error rates for each coil. Intersection of the corresponding electric field profiles in air and in a saline model head was similar and

Spatial contrast sensitivity in benign intracranial hypertension.

Spatial Contrast Sensitivity (CS) was studied in 20 patients with benign intracranial hypertension (BIH). At presentation CS loss was found in 43% of the eyes, and impairment of visual acuity attributed to BIH in only 16%. Nine patients had blurred vision or visual obscurations, all of whom had abnormal CS. The clinical application of CS measurement in BIH for monitoring the progression or regression of the disease is illustrated by serial measurements in 11 patients. Progressive visual loss in longstanding papilloedema and improvement of visual function in subsiding papilloedema can occur wit

Neuropsychological studies of object recognition.

It is well established that disorders of visual perception are associated with lesions in the right hemisphere. Performances on tasks as disparate as the identification of objects from unusual views of objects drawn so as to overlap, of fragmented letters, of familiar faces, and of anomalous features in drawings, have been shown to be impaired in patients with focal right posterior lesions. A series of investigations are reviewed, directed towards analysing the basis of these deficits. Explanations in terms of primary visual impairment can be rejected, as can an account in terms of faulty figu

Enhanced stimulus strength improves visual cognition in aging and Alzheimer's disease.

Deficits in visual cognition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) arise from neuropathological changes in higher-order association areas of the cortex and from defective input from lower-level visual processing areas. We investigated whether enhanced signal strength may lead to improvement of visual cognition in AD. We tested 35 individuals with probable AD, 35 age-matched elderly control (EC) and 58 young control (YC) adults on letter identification, word reading, picture naming, discrimination of unfamiliar faces, and pattern completion. The contrast sensitivity step-difference across an independent

Successful face recognition is associated with increased prefrontal cortex activation in autism spectrum disorder.

This study examines whether deficits in visual information processing in autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) can be offset by the recruitment of brain structures involved in selective attention. During functional MRI, 12 children with ASD and 19 control participants completed a selective attention one-back task in which images of faces and houses were superimposed. When attending to faces, the ASD group showed increased activation relative to control participants within multiple prefrontal cortex areas, including dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). DLPFC activation in ASD was associated with in

Altered neural function during episodic memory encoding and retrieval in major depression.

Memory impairments are common in major depression. Neural processing during non-emotional episodic memory in depressed patients has only sparsely been investigated, since the majority of studies have focused on emotional stimuli. The aim of this study was to explore neural correlates of episodic memory in depressive patients and to assess brain regions related to subsequent memory performance. Forty-six participants (23 depressed patients) performed a non-emotional episodic memory encoding and retrieval task while brain activation was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Modulatory effects of emotion and sleep on recollection and familiarity.

Growing evidence suggests that declarative memory benefits from the modulatory effects of emotion and sleep. The primary goal of the present study was to determine whether these two factors interact to enhance memory or they act independently of each other. Twenty-eight volunteers participated in the study. Half of them were sleep deprived the night immediately following the exposure to emotional and non-emotional images, whereas the control group slept at home. Their memory for images was tested 1 week later along the valence and arousal dimension of emotion with the remember-know procedure.

Enhanced visual memory effect for negative versus positive emotional content is potentiated at sub-anaesthetic concentrations of thiopental.

BACKGROUND: Emotional information has the ability to alter the formation and strength of a memory ('memory modulation'). Memory modulation by negative emotion is mediated by the amygdala. It is not known how gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic drugs affect the processes involved in memory modulation. This study investigates whether memory for negative emotional stimuli is more refractory to the effects of GABAergic drugs. METHODS: Eighty-three healthy volunteers were shown a randomized sequence of 60 visual stimuli consisting of negative, positive and neutral emotive pictures, while receiving
