Peer victimization and social phobia: a follow-up study among adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined longitudinal associations between direct and relational peer victimization (DV/RV) and self-reported social phobia (SP) among adolescents from 15 to 17 years of age, controlling for depression and family socioeconomic covariates. METHODS: A total of 3,278 Finnish adolescents with a mean age of 15.5 years were surveyed at baseline (T1), and followed up 2 years afterwards (T2) their mean age being 17.6 years. In all, 2,070 adolescents were reached for the follow-up. Both types of victimization were assessed with structured questions, SP with the Social Phobia Inve

Misery has more company than people think: underestimating the prevalence of others' negative emotions.

Four studies document underestimations of the prevalence of others' negative emotions and suggest causes and correlates of these erroneous perceptions. In Study 1a, participants reported that their negative emotions were more private or hidden than were their positive emotions; in Study 1b, participants underestimated the peer prevalence of common negative, but not positive, experiences described in Study 1a. In Study 2, people underestimated negative emotions and overestimated positive emotions even for well-known peers, and this effect was partially mediated by the degree to which those peer

Peer perceptions of social skills in socially anxious and nonanxious adolescents.

Previous studies using adult observers are inconsistent with regard to social skills deficits in nonclinical socially anxious youth. The present study investigated whether same age peers perceive a lack of social skills in the socially anxious. Twenty high and 20 low socially anxious adolescents (13-17 years old) were recorded giving a 5-min speech. Unfamiliar peer observers (12-17 years old) viewed the speech samples and rated four social skills: speech content, facial expressions, posture and body movement, and way of speaking. Peer observers perceived high socially anxious adolescents as si

Differentiating interpersonal correlates of depressive symptoms and social anxiety in adolescence: implications for models of comorbidity.

Research on psychosocial correlates of depression and social anxiety often has not accounted for their comorbidity. Differentiating correlates of depression and social anxiety may inform the development of comorbidity models. Building on research linking both disorders to interpersonal dysfunction, this study examined interpersonal correlates of depressive symptoms and social anxiety in nonreferred early adolescent (M age = 13.46) girls (n = 83), controlling for comorbid symptoms. Although both showed significant bivariate correlations with peer and family variables, partial correlations revea

What was retained? The assessment of the training for the peer trainers' course on short and long term basis.

BACKGROUND: In Turkey, the studies have reported that the age at which sexual intercourse and sexual activity starts has been steadily declining. There is an urgent need to increase social and health services for young people in order to provide them with a healthy life by changing their risky behaviors, avoiding unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Sexual and reproductive health training particularly for adolescents warrants special attention and consideration. The objective of our study is to find out the short and long term effectiveness of a training course on pee

Long-term recovery from heroin use among female ex-offenders: Marisol's story.

Ex-offenders experience various difficulties in successfully reentering communities post-incarceration. For those with a history of opioid misuse, despite various interventions, long-term recovery rates are relatively low. Additionally, the difficulties ex-offenders experience reintegrating with their families and communities are further compounded by the stigma and structural barriers posed by prior criminal and drug use histories. This qualitative study, using in-depth interviews conducted during an 18-month period between mid 2004 and late 2005 examines the process of creating and maintaini

Impact of Tourette Syndrome: a preliminary investigation of the effects of disclosure on peer perceptions and social functioning.

Individuals with Tourette Syndrome (TS) often experience social difficulties, which may be caused or compounded by others' negative perceptions of persons with the disorder. As a result, researchers and clinicians have called for the development of attitude change strategies. One such strategy is preventative disclosure, in which one informs others about his or her condition. To date, no known research exists exploring the effects of this type of disclosure with TS. In an attempt to examine the effects of TS disclosure, adults (N = 369) read vignettes that varied in a 2 (male vs. female charac

Punking and bullying: strategies in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Punking is a practice of verbal and physical violence, humiliation, and shaming usually done in public by males to other males. This definition is based on interviews and discussion groups with 32 adolescent boys and on media sources within which adolescent males are embedded. Discourse analysis findings reveal that punking terminology and behaviors are usually interchangeable with bullying terminology and behaviors. Both practices are purposeful strategies taken up and used by many boys to affirm masculinity norms of toughness, strength, dominance, and control. Implications from this research

The interaction between young people with atypical gender identity organization and their peers.

This exploratory study involved the qualitative analysis of the responses of eight children with atypical gender identity organization to open-ended questions about their experiences of secondary school. The aim was to develop an understanding of these young people's interaction with their peers. It became apparent that all but one of the participants had been bullied. In this context, participants reported difficulties in developing friendships, although each participant received support from at least one of their peers. Given the hostile school environment participants did not necessarily ta

Pitfalls of the peer world: how children cope with common rejection experiences.

This study examines the reliability and validity of a newly developed self-report measure designed to assess children's coping strategies in response to everyday rejection experiences. The Survey for Coping with Rejection Experiences (SCORE) was administered to 225 children and factor analysis of responses resulted in the conceptually meaningful subscales of active, aggressive, denial, and ruminative coping. A subset of 95 children also completed a battery of self- (depression, social anxiety), parent- (internalizing and externalizing problems), and peer- (social preference, aggression, withdr

Firesetting in adolescence and being aggressive, shy, and rejected by peers: new epidemiologic evidence from a national sample survey.

This population-based case control study examined the hypothesis that the occurrence of firesetting might be greater in youths who exhibit a combination of shyness and aggressiveness and may be complicated by peer rejection. The study's self-report data were from a nationally representative sample survey conducted in 1995. There were 284 cases involving 12- to 17-year-old youths who self-reported recent firesetting, regardless of their intentions. Control subjects were 4,207 youths with no such history. After subjects were matched according to age and neighborhood, conditional logistic regress

Promoting social communication in high functioning individuals with autistic spectrum disorders.

This article reviews a range of social communication interventions that have been developed for students with autism at the preschool, school age, and adolescent level. Adult-mediated and peer-mediated methods that use highly structured, child-centered, and hybrid methods are examined. Programs that provide information on generalization and maintenance are identified. A set of recommendations for programs that would seem to be most appropriate for students with Asperger syndrome is presented.

What schools can do to help gay/lesbian/bisexual youth: a harm.

In recognition of the fact that heterosexism is one of the most significant realities of adolescents' day-to-day experiences in school, this paper examines the school environment in terms of disempowering and empowering aspects. It is argued that failure to take a proactive stance to help youth with gender identity issues is a major cause of psychological problems, leading in some cases to suicide, alcohol and other drug abuse, and homelessness.

Gender differences in the control of alcohol-impaired driving in California.

OBJECTIVE: An examination of gender differences in alcohol-impaired driving. METHOD: Attitudes, perceptions and behaviors concerning drinking and driving were compared for male and female California drivers in three random-digit-dialing telephone survey interviews from 1983, 1986 and 1994 (survey response rates of 58%, 52% and 49%, respectively). A moral reasoning framework was applied to account for observed gender differences. RESULTS: Gender differences were examined within aggregate data from the 1983 and 1986 surveys (n = 291), and within the 1994 survey data (n = 608). Self-reported dr

Family support decreases influence of deviant peers on Hispanic adolescents' substance use.

Investigated the interplay of family support and peer modeling on adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use and gang involvement within an ecosystemic model. The predominantly Hispanic sample of 236 eighth-grade students attended a public middle school in a high-density, impoverished Miami neighborhood, characterized by high rates of criminal activity, substance abuse, and other stressors, placing the adolescents at risk for negative developmental outcomes. The participants reported the level of perceived social support they received from family members and rates of drug use and gang, inv

Assessing psychosocial adjustment of children with chronic illnesses: a review of the technical properties of PARS III.

Four groups of investigators in the Research Consortium on Chronic Illness in Childhood have used the Personal Adjustment and Role Skills Scale (PARS) III to assess the psychosocial adjustment of children with chronic physical illnesses and no mental impairment. The PARS III consists of 28 items that measure psychosocial functioning in six areas: peer relations, dependency, hostility, productivity, anxiety-depression, and withdrawal. Analyses of the measure's reliability and validity, using a total combined sample of 450 school-age children (ages 5-18 years) with a variety of chronic illnesses
