Measuring adolescents' exposure to victimization: The Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study.

This paper presents multilevel findings on adolescents' victimization exposure from a large longitudinal cohort of twins. Data were obtained from the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study, an epidemiological study of 2,232 children (1,116 twin pairs) followed to 18 years of age (with 93% retention). To assess adolescent victimization, we combined best practices in survey research on victimization with optimal approaches to measuring life stress and traumatic experiences, and introduce a reliable system for coding severity of victimization. One in three children experienced at lea

What influences young women to choose between the emergency contraceptive pill and an intrauterine device? A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore key factors influencing young women when choosing between two methods of emergency contraception (EC). METHODS: We interviewed 26 young women who accessed community sexual and reproductive health services for emergency contraception after they had chosen an EC. RESULTS: Most women had an unrealistically high expectation about efficacy of the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) and lacked knowledge of the intrauterine device (IUD) as an alternative method of EC. Previous use, easy accessibility, ease of use, and advice from peers, influenced women to choose the ECP, where

The mediation role of licit drugs in the influence of socializing on cannabis use among adolescents: A quantitative approach.

Licit substance use could be an early stage leading on to cannabis use. The aim of the study was to test a hypothetical sequential process l … ng to CUD, while the role of alcohol was weaker, at around 13%. Our results underline the effect of peer influence, in the course of night-out socializing, on substance use among adolescents, and the importance of tobacco mediation in the process leading to cannabis use and misuse. This suggests that prevention in places frequented by adolescents should primaril …

Gender and the risk of falling: a sociological approach.

AIM: This paper reports a grounded theory study of the influence of gender on older people's perceptions of their risk of falling and their actions to prevent future falls. BACKGROUND: The incidence and rates of falls among older people, including injurious falls, are of much international concern. The risk of falling remains a major concern for older people since it increases with age, with those aged 85 years and over at greatest risk. However, research using a sociological approach to the topic is limited. METHODS: An exploratory design, with grounded theory analysis, was used. Data were

The relationship of behavioural undercontrol to alcoholism in higher-functioning adults.

Externalising behaviours, including the personality characteristics of behavioural undercontrol (BU), represent one of several genetically influenced domains that impact on the alcoholism risk. Because genes explain only about 60% of the vulnerability toward alcohol use disorders (AUDs), an optimal understanding of how such behaviours affect the risk requires evaluation of their impact in the context of additional influences. Few studies have addressed this question regarding BU among relatively well-functioning adults. This paper presents results from testing a BU-based mediational model of r

The Mpondombili Project: preventing HIV/AIDS and unintended pregnancy among rural South African school-going adolescents.

Unintended pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections are major threats to the health of South African youth. Gendered social norms make it difficult for young women to negotiate safer sex, and sexual coercion and violence are prevalent. Sexual activity among adolescents is influenced strongly by conservative social norms, which favour abstinence. In reality, most young people are sexually active by the end of the teen years. Girls' decision to have sex is often a passive one, influenced by partners. The Mpondombili Project is a school-based intervention in rural KwaZulu-Natal th

A short-term longitudinal study linking adolescents' metacognition, learning, and social friendship networks.

Adolescents' metacognitive skills and social relationships play key roles in learning but are often studied in isolation. This study investi … ve skills. Friends did, however, become more similar in task performance over time, suggesting that peer influence may shape learning processes other than the investigated metacognitive processes. These findings highlight the importance of metacognitive control and friendship dynamics for adolescents' learning outcomes.

Perceptions of HIV risk amongst heterosexually identifying migrants from Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa living in Australia: implications for virtual elimination of HIV.

Heterosexually identifying migrants in Australia are among populations experiencing increasing HIV notifications, highlighting concerns about low rates of sexual health testing and awareness of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). Utilising in-depth interviews, we explored perceptions of HIV risk among 16 heterosexually identifying migrants from Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. Domains of inquiry were HIV risk assessment and management, knowledge and attitudes. Participants were majority female, aged 35 years and above, living in Australia for at least three years. Factors Behind Contemporary Rape Myths in Europe: A Systematic Review.

Rape myths are social constructs, deeply rooted in European society. They play a role in maintaining false beliefs about sexual violence and are one of the main factors in sexual abuse behavior. In this review article, the authors focused on the factors influencing the perpetuation and spread of false beliefs regarding sexual violence, its victims, and perpetrators. The goal of the study is to achieve a more profound comprehension of the cultural and social dimensions linked to this occurrence. In conducting the systematic literature review, three databases have been used to search for pertine

Management of individuals with heterozygous germline pathogenic variants in ATM: A clinical practice resource of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG).

PURPOSE: ATM germline pathogenic variants (GPVs) are associated with a moderately increased risk of female breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer. Resources for managing ATM heterozygotes in clinical practice are limited. METHODS: An international workgroup developed a clinical practice resource to guide management of ATM heterozygotes using peer-reviewed publications and expert opinion. RESULTS: Although ATM is a moderate (intermediate) penetrance gene, cancer risks may be considered as a continuous variable, influenced by family history and other modifiers. ATM GPV heterozyg

Can words be worse than stones? Understanding distressing social events and their relationship with social anxiety.

Research on the relationship between distressing social events and social anxiety has focused on antagonistic social events (i.e., peer victimization, cyberbullying) in adolescent samples. There is little research examining such relationships in adults, and less examining the relationship between non-antagonistic distressing social events (i.e., accidental embarrassing events) and social anxiety. The current investigation utilized a retrospective design to examine how different distressing social events may be associated with posttraumatic stress-like reactions, which may relate to social anxi

DRD1 5'UTR variation, sex and early infant stress influence ethanol consumption in rhesus macaques.

The mesolimbic dopamine system plays an important role in mediating a variety of behaviors and is involved in mediating the reinforcing effects of ethanol. Genes encoding dopamine receptor subtypes are thus good candidate loci for understanding the genetic etiologies of susceptibility to alcohol dependence and its antecedent behavioral phenotypes. We tested whether variation in DRD1 influences alcohol consumption in rhesus macaques and whether its influence is mediated by sex and early rearing experience. We genotyped a single nucleotide polymorphism (-111 G/T) in the 5'UTR of DRD1 in 96 subje
