Group screening for cognition disorders in elderly persons.

Prevalence rates of cognitive impairment in persons aged 75 to 85 years are in the range of 10 to 19 percent, and 20 to 47 percent after the age of 85 years. Screening for dementia in persons aged 75 years and older would therefore identify a significant number of impaired persons. When screening for dementia, group testing would be more cost-effective than individual testing. We modified the Folstein Mini-Mental State examination (MMSE) for screening in a group setting. Community volunteers were tested at a geriatric health fair and at a special exercise class for the elderly. Subjects were s

What Preclinical Medical Students Value When Choosing a Surgical Career: A Cluster Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding what students value when choosing a surgical career and whether early exposure changes them is crucial for effective recruitment. This study used a prospective preclinical surgical skills course to evaluate specialty choice factors and determine whether improved skills influence them or interest in the sponsoring specialty. METHODS: Forty-seven preclinical medical students enrolled in an 8-wk vascular surgery-sponsored elective skills course. Students completed standardized precourse and postcourse surveys assessing interest in surgery and the sponsoring specialty,

Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia in the Context of Progressive Apraxia of Speech: A Clinico-Neuroimaging Case-Control Study.

Objective: Progressive apraxia of speech (PAOS) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by impaired motor speech planning and programming, whereas behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is characterized by deviant behavioral (e.g., personality and social) features. Clinical and anatomic characteristics of bvFTD in the context of PAOS are understudied. Methods: We identified 12 participants with PAOS and features that were consistent with bvFTD at baseline or follow-up. Eleven completed a head MRI scan. We compared clinical features and anatomical patterns of atrophy in these

Coping strategies in people with type 1 diabetes on insulin pump treatment.

BACKGROUND: In stressed people with diabetes (PWD) glycemia varies idiosyncratically. Coping is a relatively stable personality trait that assesses how individual deals with stress. Insulin pumps are considered the best insulin delivery system but require more attention from PWD, virtually increasing stress levels. Aim of our study was to evaluate the coping strategies adopted by a pool of participants with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) therapy. METHODS: We collected data from 158 people with T1DM on CSII. COPE-NVI Test was administered and

Evaluating latent tuberculosis infection diagnostics using latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lack of a gold standard for latent TB infection has precluded direct measurement of test characteristics of the tuberculin skin test and interferon-γ release assays (QuantiFERON Gold In-Tube and T-SPOT.TB). OBJECTIVE: We estimated test sensitivity/specificity and latent TB infection prevalence in a prospective, US-based cohort of 10 740 participants at high risk for latent infection. METHODS: Bayesian latent class analysis was used to estimate test sensitivity/specificity and latent TB infection prevalence among subgroups based on age, foreign birth outside the USA and HIV infect

Factors Associated With Partner Notification, Testing, and Positivity in HIV Partner Services Programs in the United States, 2013 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) partner services are an essential component of comprehensive HIV prevention and care. We examined factors associated with partner notification, HIV testing, and HIV positivity among partners of HIV-diagnosed persons (index persons) contacted by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded state and local health departments. METHODS: We analyzed partner service data submitted to the CDC by 61 state and local health departments from 2013 to 2017. Using multivariate Poisson regression-adjusted for clustering effects among partners reporte

Evaluation of a rapid qualitative enzyme chromatographic test for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

Rapid determination of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) status is desirable when it is necessary to use a drug contraindicated in G6PD-deficient persons, such as use of primaquine for malaria prevention or treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare a new, rapid, qualitative enzyme chromatographic test for deficiency of G6PD to a standard reference method. Samples from 196 G6PD-normal persons and 50 G6PD-deficient persons were evaluated. The sensitivity of the experimental rapid test was 0.98 and the specificity was 0.98 using specimens preserved in heparin, and 0.98 and 0.97,

Taxometric analyses and predictive accuracy of callous-unemotional traits regarding quality of life and behavior problems in non-conduct disorder diagnoses.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits have mainly been studied in relation to conduct disorder (CD), but can also occur in other disorder groups. However, it is unclear whether there is a clinically relevant cut-off value of levels of CU traits in predicting reduced quality of life (QoL) and clinical symptoms, and whether CU traits better fit a categorical (taxonic) or dimensional model. Parents of 979 youths referred to a child and adolescent psychiatric clinic rated their child's CU traits on the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional traits (ICU), QoL on the Kidscreen-27, and clinical symptoms on the C

Traumatic event exposure and gambling: associations with clinical, neurocognitive, and personality variables.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological research has shown high comorbidity rates between at-risk/problem (ARP) gambling and trauma. However, few studies have assessed the neurocognitive implications of this comorbidity, and even fewer have been conducted with young adults. The present study sought to determine the neurocognitive, clinical, personality types associated with trauma in ARP gamblers. METHODS: The present study analyzed young adult gamblers age 18 to 29 drawn from a study investigating impulsivity. Of the 230 gamblers, 52 (22.6%) reported experiencing a traumatic event during their life to w

Unconscious dynamics in twin pregnancy emerging from the Lüscher color test.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate unconscious dynamics in women pregnant with twins, using Lüscher's color test to objectively measure subjective color preferences, and compare them with women with singleton pregnancies. METHODS: The color test was administered to 50 Italian women with twin pregnancies and 100 women with singleton pregnancies. RESULTS: Both the twin and singleton pregnancy groups said that violet was their favorite color (50 versus 49%) and brown was their least favorite color (52 versus 44%), indicating that they idealized being pregnant, but also found it physically stressful. Personality, manual preference and neuroendocrine reactivity in hirsute subjects.

Behavioral and neuroendocrine differences may be postulated in hirsute subjects since central effects of gonadal steroids are well established. We conducted a controlled clinical study with 25 consecutive young hirsute participants compared with 20 consecutive controls. Neuropsychological evaluation included the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Edinburgh Inventory of Manual Preference (EIMP). Neuroendocrine reactivity was assessed by the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol responses to corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH). Hirsute participants presented a

Neuropsychological correlates of domestic violence.

Neuropsychological functioning was assessed in 39 males who had committed domestic violence (batterers) and compared to 63 nonviolent (both maritally discordant and satisfied) subjects recruited by advertisement. Subjects were subsequently divided into two groups (head injured, nonhead injured) and these groups were also contrasted as a function of batterer status. Tests were administered to assess for cognitive and behavioral functions, including executive dysfunction, hypothesized to be a factor contributing to propensity for violence. Questionnaires and structured clinical interviews were u

Growth environment and personality in adult migraineurs and their migraine-free siblings.

The aim of the study was to compare adult migraine discordant full siblings in terms of personality and psychosocial environment during childhood. The study, involving 30 sibling pairs and use of various personality instruments (Eysenck Personality Inventory [EPI], Color Word Test [CWT], Visual Aftereffects [VAE], Meta Contrast Technique [MCT], Cesarec-Marke Personality Schedule), showed the migraineurs scored significantly higher on neuroticism [EPI], also called emotional stress or trait anxiety; to be more sensitive (MCT); and to display signs of greater anxiety (VAE, CWT). Furthermore, mig

The impact of homelessness on children's level of aspiration.

In a sample of 39 school-age homeless children, their length of stay in shelters for the homeless was significantly correlated with an index of their level of aspiration. This correlation remained significant even when the effects of the children's intelligence and their performance on a related cognitive task were partialed out. Stories given in response to two Thematic Apperception Test cards by a small sample of these children illustrate the potentially traumatic consequences of homelessness on children's hopes and aspirations.

Effect of DSM-III personality disorders on outcome of tricyclic antidepressant-treated nonpsychotic outpatients with major or minor depressive disorder.

This is the first outcome report of the effect of a personality disorder on nonhospitalized major depressive patients that used a standardized DSM-III measure and did not prescreen to eliminate certain personality disorders. Six-month outcome was compared for nonpsychotic patients with major depression and a DSM-III personality disorder (n = 26) and those who did not have a personality disorder (n = 11). Patients without a personality disorder had significantly better outcome as measured by the Global Assessment Scale and employment status. There was also a trend for less physician utilization

[My fingers itch, but my hands are bound. An exploratory psychosomatic study of patients with dyshidrosis of the hands (cheiropompholyx)].

The purpose of a pilot study with 20 patients, suffering from dyshidrotic exzema of the hands, was to investigate the relevance of a psychosomatic approach for its etiology and therapy. A set of psychological and allergological tests revealed the following results. - 10 patients suffered from a contact allergy (epicutaneous test), 6 of them were allergic to nickel - the patients were less aggressive and more permissive (Freiburger Personality Inventory; FPI) as compared to a standard population. They reported more somatic complaints (HHM) as healthy subjects. - the results of a semistructured

Neurocognitive performance and cognitive biases in young adults with schizotypal traits.

Recent research suggests that neurocognitive deficits in patients with schizophrenia may increase the risk of developing cognitive biases. As such, we set out to determine this predictive relationship as it pertains to the development of a first-episode psychosis. We hypothesized that poorer performance in processing speed would be associated with jumping to conclusions and an externalizing bias. Poorer performance in working memory would be associated with belief inflexibility and jumping to conclusions, and poorer performance in attention would be associated with attention to threat. We hypo
