The sympathetic superior cervical ganglia as peripheral neuroendocrine centers.

The superior cervical ganglia (SCG) provide sympathetic innervation to the pineal gland, cephalic blood vessels, the choroid plexus, the eye, carotid body and the salivary and thyroid glands. Removal of the ganglia brings about several neuroendocrine changes in mammals, including the disruption of water balance in pituitary stalk-sectioned rats, and the alteration of normal photoperiodic control of reproduction in hamsters, ferrets, voles, rams and goats. These effects are commonly attributed to pineal denervation. However pinealectomy does not always mimic ganglionectomy in its neuroendocrine…

Integrative modeling of cold and light signaling in tomato: unraveling the transcriptional network governing cold acclimation.

The integration of light and cold signaling is critical for cold acclimation in plants, but the regulatory complexity of the underlying tran … tions successfully reproduced the experimentally observed gene expression dynamics across different photoperiods and revealed that phytochrome activity is co-modulated by both light quality and temperature. Our model predicts that a low red/far-red ratio enhances the expression of CBF, whereas cold treatment stabilizes phyA and phyB proteins, jointly promotin …

Cryptochrome-mediated integration of circadian rhythms into seasonal cycles in the silkworm Bombyx mori.

The domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori is both a major sericultural species and a powerful model for studying how environmental cues are conv … tional repressor. Loss of Bmcry1 disrupts embryonic hatching and adult eclosion rhythms and impairs photoperiodic modulation of diapause, while temperature-dependent diapause induction under constant darkness is largely retained. By contrast, Bmcry2 mutants show reduced temperature-dependent diapause induction, although the direct role of BmCRY2 in the silkwo …

Intrinsically synthesized melatonin in mitochondria and factors controlling its production.

The percentage of the total amount of melatonin produced in vertebrates that comes from the pineal is small (likely <5%) but, nevertheless, … erived from the pineal gland. Its synthesis is not circadian and it is not directly impacted by the photoperiodic environment. Also, melatonin from the extrapineal sites is not normally secreted into the blood stream; rather, it acts locally in its cell of synthesis or, possibly via paracrine mechanisms, on immediately adjacent cells. The functions of extrapi …

Annual reproductive cycle of males of the great fruit-eating bat, Artibeus lituratus: Testicular variations, abiotic regulation and sperm analysis.

Artibeus lituratus is one of the most well-known bat species in the Neotropics, probably due to its high abundance and the ability to inhabi … easonal variations in testicular parameters are correlated with annual fluctuations in rainfall and photoperiod but not with temperature. In general, the species presents smaller spermatogenic indexes with a similar sperm quantity and quality to other bat species.

Genome-wide identification, characterization, and expression analysis of CCT transcription factors in poplar.

The CCT [CONSTANS (CO), CO-like, and TIMING OF CAB EXPRESSION1 (TOC1)] gene family is involved in photoperiodic flowering and adaptation to different environments. In this study, 39 CCT family genes from the poplar genome were identified and characterized, including 18 COL, 7 PRR, and 14 CMF TFs. Phylogenetics analysis showed that the PtrCCT gene family could be classified into five classes (Classes I-V) that have close relationships with Arabidopsis thaliana. Eight pairs of PtrCCTs had collinear relationships through interchromosomal synteny analysis in poplar, suggesting segmental duplicatio…

Farming for Pharming: Novel Hydroponic Process in Contained Environment for Efficient Pharma-Grade Production of Saffron.

Soilless cultivation of saffron (Crocus sativus) in a controlled environment represents an interesting alternative to field cultivation, in … s plant. Various cultivation recipes, different in spectrum and intensity of lighting, temperature, photoperiod and irrigation, have been adopted to study their effect on saffron production. The experimentation involved the cultivation of corms from two subsequent farm years, to identify and validate the optimal conditions, both in terms of quantitative yield …

Negative regulation of melatonin secretion by melatonin receptors in ovine pinealocytes.

Melatonin (MLT) is a biological modulator of circadian and seasonal rhythms and reproduction. The photoperiodic information is detected by retinal photoreceptors and transmitted through nerve transmissions to the pineal gland, where MLT is synthesized and secreted at night into the blood. MLT interacts with two G protein-coupled receptors, MT1 and MT2. The aim of our work was to provide evidence for the presence of MLT receptors in the ovine pineal gland and define their involvement on melatonin secretion. For the first time, we identified the expression of MLT receptors with the specific 2-[1…

Distribution patterns of the zebrafish neuronal intermediate filaments inaa and inab.

It has been reported that the neuronal intermediate filament (IF) α-internexin may plays a role in the formation of the neuronal cytoskeleto … detected. Besides, the expression of inaa in male adult fish was found to be stable under different photoperiod conditions. Thus, we suggest that inaa is one of useful markers for studies of zebrafish cone photoreceptors not only in the retina but also in the pineal gland. In conclusion, we report that the distribution patterns of inaa and inab are phylogenet …

Regulation of diapause in carnivores.

Embryonic diapause is an evolutionary strategy to ensure that offspring are born when maternal and environmental conditions are optimal for survival. In many species of carnivores, obligate embryonic diapause occurs in every gestation. In mustelids, the regulation of diapause and reactivation is influenced by photoperiod, which then acts to regulate the secretion of pituitary prolactin. Prolactin in turn regulates ovarian steroid function. Reciprocal embryo transplant studies indicate that this state of embryonic arrest is conferred by uterine conditions and is presumed to be due to a lack of …

Diurnal expression of clock genes in pineal gland and brain and plasma levels of melatonin and cortisol in Atlantic salmon parr and smolts.

In Atlantic salmon, the preadaptation to a marine life, i.e., parr-smolt transformation, and melatonin production in the pineal gland are regulated by the photoperiod. However, the clock genes have never been studied in the pineal gland of this species. The aim of the present study was to describe the diurnal expression of clock genes (Per1-like, Cry2, and Clock) in the pineal gland and brain of Atlantic salmon parr and smolts in freshwater, as well as plasma levels of melatonin and cortisol. By employing an out-of-season smolt production model, the parr-smolt transformation was induced by sub…

Melatonin and its possible role in mediating seasonal metabolic changes of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba.

Melatonin, the chief secretory product of the vertebrate pineal gland is suspected to be a ubiquitous molecule principally involved in the transduction of photoperiodic information. Besides vertebrates, melatonin has been detected throughout phylogeny in numerous non-vertebrate taxa. In the present study, the occurrence of melatonin in Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and its possible role in mediating seasonal metabolic changes was evaluated. Melatonin was quantified by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) purified extracts of eyestalks a…

Sleep fragmentation, and changes in locomotor activity and body temperature in trypanosome-infected rats.

The rest-activity and body temperature 24 h cycles, as well as the structure of spontaneous sleep, were studied in rats 3 weeks after infection with monomorphic Trypanosoma brucei brucei. This parasite belongs to the species of trypanosomes that causes in humans African sleeping sickness, a neuropsychiatric syndrome that involves alterations of endogenous biological rhythms. In the infected rats, entrained to a 12 h:12 h photoperiod, a considerable hypokinesia was detected during the hours of darkness. A significant oscillation of the body temperature during 24 h was lost in some infected anim…
