Study Protocol for "Psilocybin as a Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa: A Pilot Study".

Background: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious and life-threatening psychiatric condition. With a paucity of approved treatments, there is a desperate need for novel treatment avenues to be explored. Here, we present (1) an overview of the ways through which Public Patient Involvement (PPI) has informed a trial of psilocybin-assisted therapy for AN and (2) a protocol for a pilot study of psilocybin-assisted therapy in AN currently underway at Imperial College London. The study aims to assess the feasibility, brain mechanisms and preliminary outcomes of treating anorexia nervosa with psilocybin

A Pilot Study of Rare Renal Amyloidosis Based on FFPE Proteomics.

Renal amyloidosis typically manifests albuminuria, nephrotic-range proteinuria, and ultimately progresses to end-stage renal failure if diagnosed late. Different types of renal amyloidosis have completely different treatments and outcomes. Therefore, amyloidosis typing is essential for disease prognosis, genetic counseling and treatment. Thirty-six distinct proteins currently known to cause amyloidosis that have been described as amyloidogenic precursors, immunohistochemistry (IHC) or immunofluorescence (IF), can be challenging for amyloidosis typing especially in rare or hereditary amyloidosi

Assessment of neurological symptoms in adult hydrocephalus occlusus. A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensively describe and compare (pre⁄postoperatively) the clinical symptomatology in adult non-communicated hydrocephalus. Associated hydrocephalus signs were analyzed with the idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Scale (iNPH Scale). A standardized clinical scale for non-communicated hydrocephalus is currently not in use. METHODS: Ten patients with hydrocephalus occlusus (HO) were analyzed. Hydrocephalus signs were examined with the iNPH Scale in gait, neuropsychology, continence, and balance before and three months after treatment with shunt operation or third endoscopic

[An evaluation of a Hungarian questionnaire to assess childhood adversities: A pilot study].

BACKGROUND: Detection of childhood traumas is important both in clinical practice and in research. There is a pressing need for methods that are relatively simple but comprehensive, non-intrusive, and possess adequate psyc - ho metric properties. In this study we translated one of the most widely used and well-studied measure of childhood abuse and neglect and explored the psychometrical properties of this questionnaire. METHODS: The study was based on data from a clinical (N=171) and a normative (N=358) sample. In total 529 adults participated in the testing process. Beside the trauma questi

Point-of-care naloxone distribution in the emergency department: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: Opioid overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) for use by laypersons has been shown to be safe and effective, but implementation in the emergency department (ED) setting is challenging. Recent literature has shown a discouragingly low rate of obtainment of naloxone that is prescribed in the ED setting. We conducted a study to evaluate the feasibility of point-of-care (POC) distribution of naloxone in an ED, hypothesizing a rate of obtainment higher than prescription fill rates reported in previous studies. SUMMARY: A multidisciplinary team of experts, including pharmacist

Liver epigenome changes in patients with hepatopulmonary syndrome: A pilot study.

The hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is defined by the presence of pulmonary gas exchange abnormalities due to intrapulmonary vascular dilatations in patients with chronic liver disease. Changes in DNA methylation reflect the genomic variation. Since liver transplant (LT) reverts HPS we hypothesized that it may be associated with specific liver epigenetic changes. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of the liver epigenome in patients with HPS. We extracted DNA from paraffin embedded liver tissue samples from 10 patients with HPS and 10 age-, sex- and MELD (Model for End-stage

The importance of use of the FSFI questionnaire in gynecology and venerology: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is recognized as an excellent tool for assessing female sexuality and screening female sexual dysfunction, but it also has important venereological implications as sexually transmitted diseases result from human behaviour in the sexual sphere. It is influenced by socio-economic, psychological and cultural factors. AIM: To present the results of an attempt to implement FSFI in gynaecological practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study comprised 91 women aged 20-35 (mean: 24.3 ±4.0) undergoing prophylactic gynaecological examinations. All of

Pilot Gene Expression and Histopathologic Analysis of Tracheal Resections in Tracheobronchomalacia.

BACKGROUND: The airway structures and messenger RNA expression of genes that regulate airway inflammation and remodeling may be altered in the trachea of patients with tracheobronchomalacia (TBM). METHODS: Fourteen tracheal specimens obtained from 2005 to 2018 were used in this study. Surgical resection specimens from patients with TBM and tracheal stenosis (TS) were compared with control tracheal specimens obtained from autopsy cases. We investigated the messenger RNA expression of genes encoding fibroblast growth factor (FGF) binding protein 2 (FGFBP2), FGF receptor R3 (FGFR3), interleukin-

Identifying Patterns of Symptom Distress in Pregnant Women: A Pilot Study.

During pregnancy, a woman's enlarged uterus and the developing fetus lead to symptom distress; in turn, physical and psychological aspects of symptom distress are often associated with adverse prenatal and birth outcomes. This study aimed to identify the trends in the trajectory of these symptoms. This longitudinal study recruited 95 pregnant women, with a mean age of 32 years, from the prenatal wards of two teaching hospitals in northern Taiwan. Symptom distress was measured by a 22-item scale related to pregnancy-induced symptoms. The follow-up measurements began during the first trimester a

Transvaginal Photobiomodulation for the Treatment of Chronic Pelvic Pain: A Pilot Study.

Background: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a common and debilitating condition that affects millions of U.S. women. Most treatments are ineffective and innovative new therapies are desperately needed. Large, controlled studies show that photobiomodulation (PBM) can reduce pain in patients with other chronic pain conditions, such as low back pain, neck pain, and fibromyalgia. The objective of this pilot study was to determine if transvaginal PBM (TV-PBM) can reduce pain in women with CPP. Methods: We conducted a before and after, observational, pilot study. Patients completed the Short Form-McGil

A Model To Estimate Glucose Absorption in Peritoneal Dialysis: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Glucose absorption in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) may contribute to adverse metabolic effects. Previous studies on glucose absorption were done on patients on continuous ambulatory PD, with a long dwell time. However, the growing majority of contemporary patients on PD perform automated PD with a short dwell time. Moreover, membrane characteristics and dwell time determine small-solute transport across the peritoneal membrane. METHODS: In our pilot study, we used data from the peritoneal equilibration test (PET) to develop a model to estimate glucose absorption. In six ra
