Assessing the Cost of Prophylactic Antibiotic Use After Cleft Lip and Lip Adhesion Procedures.

The purpose of this study was to understand the true cost of administering prophylactic antibiotics postoperatively to patients undergoing c … perative antibiotics. If we assume that antibiotics are of limited value for all clean-contaminated plastic surgery procedures, the plastic surgery department can expect to save $18,000 to $22,000 each year by forgoing their use. Furthermore, when clinically supported, reducing the use of prophylactic antibiotics not only diminishes the cost of care but also reduces the com …

Oculofacial plastic surgery-related online search trends including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose: The authors aim to characterize oculofacial plastic surgery-related online interest that may be useful in forecasting demand and in designing patient-directed online resources. Methods: The authors queried Google Trends for over 100 oculofacial plastic surgery terms. The main outcome measure was the top 50 oculofacial plastic surgery-related search terms from 2004 to 2020. Secondary outcomes were trends, including seasonality, and search volume changes during the COVID-19 lockdown (March-May 2020) compared to 2018-2019. Terms were analyzed individually and in thematic categories; cont

Current status of single port robotic-assisted reconstructive urology: a systematic review, meta-analysis and structured summary of the available literature.

Single Port (SP) surgery is the most relevant surgical innovation of the past six years. Few data are available on the advantages and disadvantages of SP Robotic-Assisted reconstructive urology. In the present systematic review, we summarize the results of available literature exploring the feasibility of SP reconstructive urological procedures and comparing the SP and Multi Port (MP) approaches. The MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Library Databases were systematically searched for articles evaluating outcomes of SP robotic-assisted pyeloplasty, ureteral reimplantation, Boari Flap, fistula repair

Development and Validation of a Plastic Surgery-Oriented Anatomical Scoring System for Surgical Indications in Vulvar Lichen Sclerosus.

BACKGROUND: Vulvar lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory condition that often leads to progressive anatomical distortion and functional impairment. For patients with advanced-stage disease, surgical intervention becomes a treatment option. However, a standardized tool to guide surgical decision-making from a plastic surgery perspective is currently lacking. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 27 patients with vulvar lichen sclerosus who underwent reconstructive surgery. A novel anatomical scoring system was developed based on 4 domains, including the clitoral hood, vag

Animal attack: an unusual case of multiple trauma in childhood.

A 2½ year old girl attended our facility following attack by a tapir at a city zoo. She sustained multiple injuries including a forearm laceration and multiple perforating wounds to her abdominal wall. She had several procedures, including bowel resection, performed under the care of the General Paediatric Surgery and Plastic Surgery teams and was treated with a course of IV antibiotics. She recovered well and to date has suffered no long-term adverse outcome.

[Regional anaesthesia for head and neck surgery].

Plastic surgery is more and more developing. Facial blocks are adapted to surgical procedures performed in this setting. They are easy to perform and may prolong postoperative analgesia. Facial blocks may be used in ambulatory surgery as a single technique or combined with general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation. After a reminding of facial nerve anatomy, facial and cervical blocks are described with their indications. Guidelines for performance and monitoring are also indicated.

Perception of Risk Among Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: With continuous innovation in plastic surgery, new procedures are constantly being introduced. A number of these procedures are generally safe but have the potential for rare yet serious complications. Many surgeons steer clear of these procedures due to safety concerns. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper was to survey the membership of The Aesthetic Society to elicit perception of risk of several novel or less mainstream procedures. METHODS: A 24-item survey was sent out to members of The Aesthetic Society. The survey focused on surgeon experience and attitude towards 3 procedure

Simulation in Cleft Care: Evolution, Evidence, and Training the Future Surgeon.

Strict trainee work-week hour restrictions, increased complexities of surgical care, and shifting hospital policies have posed challenges to operating room training for residents in high-resource regions. A shortage of cleft-trained surgeon educators and inconsistent training curricula further limit exposure to cleft operative education in low-resource settings. Furthermore, teaching cleft surgery can be difficult given the confined space of the infant oral cavity and the small, delicate flaps used for reconstruction. In the face of these challenges, the role of simulation has expanded in surg

Ethical Challenges for Plastic Surgery in Treating Internationally Adopted Children With Cleft Lip and Palate.

A large number of children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) were adopted to Sweden in the last decade, mainly from China. Most of the children arrived with unoperated palates and at later ages than earlier years. This article aims to present an overview of ethical challenges within the practice of international adoption of children with CLP from the perspective of plastic surgery in a welfare health care system. An overview of CLP treatment is presented, followed by a normative discussion and ethical analysis using the 4 principles of Beauchamp and Childress: non-maleficence, beneficence, auton

Mastoid emissary vein: anatomy and clinical relevance in plastic & reconstructive surgery.

The mastoid emissary vein (MEV) is an anatomical structure with limited description in the literature and its importance is even less recognized in the plastic surgical field. Investigations in its anatomy and physiology have described its anthropological significance in transition to bipedalism and preferential intracranial venous flow into the vertebral plexus in the upright man. Inadvertant injury of vessels of this size pose a significant problem due not only to difficulty with haemostasis but also from their bidirectional flow and close proximity to the sigmoid sinus where cases of thromb

[Soft tissue defects following tumor resection in the limbs and trunk : Plastic reconstructive soft tissue and revision concepts].

BACKGROUND: Tissue defects of the trunk and limbs after oncologic surgery and radiation require plastic reconstructive tissue coverage. Depending on the location and size of the wound as well as the interdisciplinary treatment concept, different reconstructive procedures are performed. These range from skin transplantation to local and pedicle flaps, to perforator flaps and free microsurgical tissue transfer. METHODS: The modern "reconstructive ladder" can be regarded as an orientation for the sequence of the reconstructive options. Considering the patient's wishes and risk profile, an indivi

Evidence-Based Perioperative Nutrition Recommendations: Optimizing Results and Minimizing Risks.

Plastic surgery patients span the nutritional spectrum from generally healthy, nutritionally competent patients to inherently catabolic, nutritionally deficient, and chronic wound patients. Therefore, plastic and reconstructive surgery affords the opportunity to investigate the impact of nutrition across a heterogeneous patient population following a wide variety of procedures. Although patients may be nutritionally deficient in certain vitamins warranting perioperative repletion, other supplements have the potential to benefit all patients, regardless of nutritional status. Despite these puta

Different aspects of informed consent in aesthetic surgeries.

Providing an informed consent has an important role in promotion of medical treatments and reduction of judiciary litigations in this process. Today with cultural changes and wide propagation that is usually charming, the request for aesthetic surgery has an increasing trend. These problems with complexity of cosmetic surgeries lead to deeper differences of information between plastic surgeons and patients, so the discussion on giving information to a patient is of great importance. Regarding the elective choice of aesthetic surgeries, there is a need on providing a standard informed consent f
