The river of life method in a schema therapy groups.

Schema therapy is an integrative approach to treat patients with personality disorders and other complex psychological problems. Group schema therapy has been developed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of schema therapy by providing a supportive and stimulating environment for change. This article introduces the River of Life Method, a novel technique for facilitating group schema therapy, based on the metaphor of a river of life. The method helps patients to identify and modify their maladaptive schemas and modes in a nurturing process in the group. The article describes the theore

Psychotherapy in the Oncology Setting.

A person who faces the diagnosis of cancer is subjected to changes within his body, but also with regard to his view of himself and his social relationships. Cancer related psychological distress occurs frequently and has a different prevalence according to-among other factors-cancer type and stage of disease. The main psychiatric disturbances observed in patients with cancer are adjustment disorders and affective disorders (anxiety and depression), which in the majority of patients are due to stressors related to the occurrence and threat of the disease and pre-existing psychological vulnerab

How much is too much? (Part 1) International Olympic Committee consensus statement on load in sport and risk of injury.

Athletes participating in elite sports are exposed to high training loads and increasingly saturated competition calendars. Emerging evidence indicates that poor load management is a major risk factor for injury. The International Olympic Committee convened an expert group to review the scientific evidence for the relationship of load (defined broadly to include rapid changes in training and competition load, competition calendar congestion, psychological load and travel) and health outcomes in sport. We summarise the results linking load to risk of injury in athletes, and provide athletes, co

Anger regulation in traumatized Cambodian refugees: the perspectives of Buddhist monks.

Recent research has highlighted the importance of traditional methods of healing in relation to the treatment of psychological distress in non-Western populations. This pilot study, conducted in Massachusetts, investigates what Buddhist Cambodian monks consider to be the causes, phenomenology and appropriate intervention strategies for anger among Cambodian refugees. Six monks were interviewed at four major temples in Massachusetts. Findings suggested that anger was common in the Cambodian community, was frequently triggered by marital discord, and commonly resulted in verbal and physical viol

Worksite-induced morbidities among truck drivers in the United States.

A critical review was conducted of social, psychological, and health science literature on the array of health risks and morbidities of truckers. Multilevel worksite-induced strains (e.g., long work hours and fatigue, shift work and sleep deprivation, postural fatigue and exposure to noise and vibration, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, exposure to diesel exhaust fumes, and other occupational stressors) were categorized into six primary morbidities for truckers: (1) psychological and psychiatric disorders; (2) detriments resulting from disrupted biological cycles; (3) musculoskeletal di

Multi-dimensional integrated dance therapeutics (MIDT) for fall prevention in community-dwelling older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies advocate for dance interventions that address the physical and psychological factors associated with fall risk. The multi-dimensional integrated dance therapeutics (MIDT) program engages participants in physical, psychological, and environmental interactions within a single dance therapeutics framework, rather than focusing solely on balance, strength, or mobility outcomes; it therefore promotes an integrated approach for fall prevention among community-dwelling older individuals. With the increase in the aging population, there is a growing demand for developing a

Assessment of Depression, Anxiety, and Quality of Life in Patients With Psoriasis Using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21): A Cross-Sectional Study From Southern India.

Introduction Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder associated with significant psychosocial morbidity. Despite its visible nature and impact on daily functioning, data from India on the prevalence of depression and anxiety in psoriasis patients remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate psychological morbidity and its relationship with disease severity and quality of life (QoL) in patients with psoriasis. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 63 adult patients with psoriasis attending a tertiary care teaching hospital in Southern India between February 2021 and Aug

The protective role of mindful parenting against child maltreatment and aggressive behavior: an exploratory study among Chinese parent-adolescent dyads.

BACKGROUND: It is well-established that child maltreatment practiced by parents is associated with adolescent aggression. Emerging evidence has suggested that higher levels of mindful parenting are associated with fewer negative parenting practices. However, the relationships among mindful parenting, child maltreatment, and adolescent aggression remain unclear. AIM: To examine the association between mindful parenting, child maltreatment, and adolescent aggressive behavior among Chinese parent-adolescent dyads. METHODS: Survey data from 554 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads were used for the a

Beyond Outcomes: Emotional and Technical Growth Following Procedural Complications.

Major procedural complications are an unavoidable feature of interventional cardiology and often represent pivotal inflection points in an operator's professional development. Beyond their immediate clinical consequences, these events can profoundly influence confidence, judgment, risk tolerance, and subsequent technical growth. Whether complications stimulate learning or precipitate persistent distress depends largely on how they are interpreted, discussed, and supported. This review examines the emotional and cognitive responses of interventional cardiologists following major procedural comp

The effects of driving experience on responses to a static hazard perception test.

Novice drivers exhibit deficits in hazard perception that are likely to increase their risk of collisions. We developed a static hazard perception test that presents still images to observers and requires them to indicate the presence of a traffic conflict that would lead to a collision. Responses to these scenes were obtained for young adult novice (N=29) and experienced drivers (N=27). Additionally, participants rated the hazard risk and clutter of each scene. Novice drivers rated traffic conflicts as less hazardous and responded more slowly to them. Using a subset of 21 scenes, we were able

The acquisition of robust and flexible cognitive skills.

The authors introduce a model of skill acquisition that incorporates elements of both traditional models and models based on embedded cognition by striking a balance between top-down and bottom-up control. A knowledge representation is used in which pre- and postconditions are attached to actions. This model captures improved performance due to learning not only in terms of shorter solution times and lower error rates during the task but also in an increased flexibility to solve similar problems and robustness against unexpected events. In 3 experiments using a complex aviation task, the autho

Shared decision-making in food allergy management.

Historically, the role of the health-care provider in medical practice has been primarily paternalistic by offering information, compassion, and decisive views with regard to medical decisions. This approach would exclude patients in the decision-making process. In a shift toward more patient-centered care, health-care providers are routinely encouraged to practice shared decision making (SDM). SDM uses evidence-based information about the options, elicitation of patient preferences, and decision support based on the patient's needs with the use of decision aids or counseling. Although there a

Head injury and alexithymia: implications for family practice care.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, a deficit in emotional information processing, and a history of head injury have both been found to be related to high rates of psychosomatic illness, substance abuse, depression, and utilization of primary care services. To date, no study has examined the potential comorbidity of alexithymia and head injury in a family practice setting, a necessary step in evaluating the aetiologic role of head injury in the development of alexithymia. The goals of this study are to establish prevalence of head injury and alexithymia in a family practice setting and to evaluate the re

A male with autoerotic asphyxia syndrome.

Approximately 250 deaths per year in the United States are attributed to the dangerous sexual paraphilia of autoerotic asphyxia. There are few studies of live practitioners of this practice which includes the act of self-asphyxiation, usually by hanging, while masturbating. Common features of the syndrome is the adoption of the role of a female transvestite, the use of pornographic material, the special kind of location for the hanging ritual, and the dynamics arising out of having a dominant mother and physically ill father. With adolescent males the ritual tends to be solitary, while in adul

Achieving 'parity of esteem': how educators can enhance the teaching and assessment of communication skills.

The commitment to give equal priority to mental and physical health (parity of esteem) guides the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Future Nurse Standards of Proficiency - a generic set of standards for nurse education. However, a recent national survey revealed that nursing students reported that the specific communication skills needed to address mental health problems are missing from practice assessments. This article reviews the current use of practice assessment documentation in which communication and relationship management skills are interpreted as 'professional values' rather than expl

Complex hand wounds and pressure garments: learning from an iatrogenic injury case study.

This article examines issues in the management of hypertrophic scarring following plastic and reconstructive surgery for an iatrogenic extravasation injury to the hand, requiring a made-to-measure glove (pressure garment). A detailed case review was undertaken alongside a critical evaluation of clinical practice, national guidelines, and published evidence. Delayed or inappropriate access to customised garments can compromise scar outcomes, limit functional recovery, and negatively affect patient wellbeing. Wider consequences include long-term physical, psychological, and social effects, as we

Mental health activities of family physicians.

A questionnaire survey of residency trained graduates and nonresidency trained family physicians showed both groups reporting relatively infrequent practice of behavioral medicine. Referrals and counseling sessions/visits produce a combined total of 20 activities per month, or two to four percent of all patient encounters, even though the physicians in the sample reported that 33 percent of their diagnoses were behavioral/psychological. More than 85 percent of the physicians reported access to more than one mental health provider. The six most common health problems encountered in the office w
