Design and performance analysis of 3D-printed stiffness gradient femoral scaffold.

Studies on 3D-printed porous bone scaffolds mostly focus on materials or structural parameters, while the repair of large femoral defects needs to select appropriate structural parameters according to the needs of different parts. In this paper, a kind of stiffness gradient scaffold design idea is proposed. Different structures are selected according to the different functions of different parts of the scaffold. At the same time, an integrated fixation device is designed to fix the scaffold. Finite element method was used to analyze the stress and strain of homogeneous scaffolds and the stiffn

Strength and Surface Characteristics of 3D-Printed Resin Crowns for the Primary Molars.

Some resin polymers available for three-dimensional (3D) printing are slightly elastic, which may be advantageous when used for full crown coverage of the primary teeth. This study was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of two types of 3D-printed resin crowns in terms of strength and surface characteristics. Polymer resins used for temporary crowns (TCs) and temporary flexible dentures (TFDs) were tested. Digitally designed crowns with different thicknesses (0.4 and 0.6 mm) were 3D-printed. Milled zirconia crowns were used as the control. The static and dynamic fracture loads of t…

Antibiofilm Activity of 3D-Printed Nanocomposite Resin: Impact of ZrO2 Nanoparticles.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a commonly used material, as it is biocompatible and relatively cheap. However, its mechanical properties and weak antibiofilm activity are major concerns. With the development of new technology, 3D-printed resins are emerging as replacements for PMMA. Few studies have investigated the antibiofilm activity of 3D-printed resins. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the antibiofilm activity and surface roughness of a 3D-printed denture base resin modified with different concentrations of zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs). A total of 60 resin dis

A 3D printed microfluidic device for scalable multiplexed CRISPR-cas12a biosensing.

Accurate, rapid, and multiplexed nucleic acid detection is critical for environmental and biomedical monitoring. In recent years, CRISPR-Cas12a has shown great potential in improving the performance of DNA biosensing. However, the nonspecific trans-cleavage activity of Cas12a complicates the multiplexing capability of Cas12a biosensing. We report a 3D-printed composable microfluidic plate (cPlate) device that utilizes miniaturized wells and microfluidic loading for a multiplexed CRISPR-Cas12a assay. The device easily combines loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and CRISPR-Cas12a read

Direct printed removable appliances: A new approach for the Twin-block appliance.

Removable appliances are an important part of orthodontic treatment. The Twin-block is widely used for Class II correction. Traditionally, an impression, bite registration, and mounted plaster casts are required to fabricate the acrylic appliance, which usually requires a specialized laboratory. This makes the process expensive and also time-consuming. This paper aims to present an innovative approach for the virtual design and direct printing of removable orthodontic appliances, particularly the Twin-block, that can be done in-office without the need for casts or a specialized laboratory.

Simulation of laryngotracheal reconstruction with 3D-printed models and porcine cadaveric models.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) is a complex operation used to treat subglottic stenosis. The use of simulator models is a valuable tool in surgical trainee education, particularly for operations such as LTR that are less common outside high-volume centers. Three-dimensional (3D) printing of the human airway may provide an effective and more accessible alternative to porcine cadaveric models. The objective of this study is to compare the educational value of a 3D-printed model and a porcine cadaveric model as LTR simulation methods. METHODS: Simulated LTR procedures were comp…

A novel mouse model of hindlimb joint contracture with 3D-printed casts.

Stiff joints formed after trauma, surgery or immobilization are frustrating for surgeons, therapists and patients alike. Unfortunately, the study of contracture is limited by available animal model systems, which focus on the utilization of larger mammals and joint trauma. Here we describe a novel mouse-based model system for the generation of joint contracture using 3D-printed clamshell casts. With this model system we are able to generate both reversible and irreversible contractures of the knee and ankle. Four- or 8-month-old female mice were casted for either 2 or 3 weeks before liberation

3D-printed poly-4-hydroxybutyrate bioabsorbable scaffolds for nipple reconstruction.

Nearly all autologous tissue techniques and engineered tissue substitutes utilized for nipple reconstruction are hindered by scar contracture and loss of projection of the reconstructed nipple. The use of unprocessed costal cartilage (CC) as an internal support for the reconstructed nipple has not been widely adopted because of the excessively firm resultant construct. Herein we use a 3D-printed Poly-4-Hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) bioabsorbable scaffold filled with mechanically processed patient-derived CC to foster ingrowth of tissue in vivo to protect the regenerated tissue from contractile forces
