Reduction Malarplasty Using Customized Surgical Stent Based on 3D Virtual Surgery, CAD/CAM, and 3D Printing Technology: Case Series.

The zygomatic bone is a structure that protrudes symmetrically on both sides of the midface and plays an important role in the overall aesthetic appearance of the face. Unlike Caucasians, the mesocephalic facial shape is predominant in Asians, and therefore, many people have a relatively laterally developed zygomatic bone. In Asians, when the zygomatic bone is excessively developed, it gives a strong and stubborn image, and aesthetically, many people want to reduce the zygomatic bone because they prefer an oval and slim face.To reduce the excessive zygomatic bone, a reduction malar- plasty thr

3D printed ocusert laden with ultra-fluidic glycerosomes of ganciclovir for the management of ocular cytomegalovirus retinitis.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitisis a vision-threatening disease that principally afflicts immunosuppressed patients. For the management of the disease, Ganciclovir (GCV) is usually administered systemically, where patients may suffer severe untoward effects. The ocularly-applied alternatives are either the intravitreal injections, which are frequently administered due to GCV short half-life, or the sustained-release implants, which require surgical removal upon drug depletion. Both therapies are invasive and should be completed by a medical expert. The objective of this research was to formulat

4D-bioprinted silk hydrogels for tissue engineering.

Recently, four-dimensional (4D) printing is emerging as the next-generation biofabrication technology. However, current 4D bioprinting lacks biocompatibility or multi-component printability. In addition, suitable implantable targets capable of applying 4D bioprinted products have not yet been established, except theoretical and in vitro study. Herein, we describe a cell-friendly and biocompatible 4D bioprinting system including more than two cell types based on digital light processing (DLP) and photocurable silk fibroin (Sil-MA) hydrogel. The shape changes of 3D printed bilayered Sil-MA hydro

A novel 3D-Printed preferential posterior mitral annular dilation device delineates regurgitation onset threshold in an ex vivo heart simulator.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) due to annular dilation occurs in a variety of mitral valve diseases and is observed in many patients with heart failure due to mitral regurgitation. To understand the biomechanics of MR and ultimately design an optimized annuloplasty ring, a representative disease model with asymmetric dilation of the mitral annulus is needed. This work shows the design and implementation of a 3D-printed valve dilation device to preferentially dilate the posterior mitral valve annulus. Porcine mitral valves (n = 3) were sewn into the device and mounted within a left heart simulator t

[Malunion of the distal radius: correction with a 3D-printed patient-specific plate].

Thanks to new developments in the field of 3D printing, surgeons have been able to use 3D-printed templates for correction osteotomy of the distal radius; recently, 3D-printed titanium implants, tailor-made for patients, have been introduced. This technique makes it possible to fix the bone elements in an anatomical position when performing a correction osteotomy in patients with complex malunions of the distal radius. In this article we discuss this new technique and illustrate it through presentation of a case.

3D-Printed Microneedles Create Precise Perforations in Human Round Window Membrane in Situ.

HYPOTHESIS: Three-dimensional (3D)-printed microneedles can create precise holes on the scale of micrometers in the human round window membrane (HRWM). BACKGROUND: An intact round window membrane is a barrier to delivery of therapeutic and diagnostic agents into the inner ear. Microperforation of the guinea pig round window membrane has been shown to overcome this barrier by enhancing diffusion 35-fold. In humans, the challenge is to design a microneedle that can precisely perforate the thicker HRWM without damage. METHODS: Based on the thickness and mechanical properties of the HRWM, two mi

Quantitative mechanics of 3D printed nanopillars interacting with bacterial cells.

One of the methods to create sub-10 nm resolution metal-composed 3D nanopillars is electron beam-induced deposition (EBID). Surface nanotopographies (e.g., nanopillars) could play an important role in the design and fabrication of implantable medical devices by preventing the infections that are caused by the bacterial colonization of the implant surface. The mechanical properties of such nanoscale structures can influence their bactericidal efficiency. In addition, these properties are key factors in determining the fate of stem cells. In this study, we quantified the relevant mechanical prop

Oral Rehabilitation of Patients Sustaining Orofacial Injuries: The UPenn Initiative.

Tissue injuries in the oral and maxillofacial structures secondary to trauma, warfare, ablative cancer, and benign tumor surgery result in significant losses of speech, masticatory and swallowing functions, aesthetic deformities, and overall psychological stressors and compromise. Optimal oral rehabilitation remains a formidable challenge and an unmet clinical need due to the influence of multiple factors related to the physiologic limitations of tissue repair, the lack of site and function-specific donor tissues and constructs, and an integrated team of multidisciplinary professionals. Development of modified release 3D printed tablets (printlets) with pharmaceutical excipients using additive manufacturing.

The aim of this study was to manufacture 3D printed tablets (printlets) from enteric polymers by single filament fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing (3DP). Hot melt extrusion was used to generate paracetamol-loaded filaments from three different grades of the pharmaceutical excipient hypromellose acetate succinate (HPMCAS), grades LG, MG and HG. One-step 3DP was used to process these filaments into enteric printlets incorporating up to 50% drug loading with two different infill percentages (20 and 100%). X-ray Micro Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) analysis revealed that printlets with 2
