Associations between COVID-19 Work-Related Stressors and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms among Chinese Doctors and Nurses: Application of Stress-Coping Theory.

Healthcare workers are vulnerable to posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) due to stressful work during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate whether the associations between COVID-19 work-related stressors and PTSS would be mediated by maladaptive and adaptive coping strategies and moderated by perceived family support based on stress-coping theory. An anonymous online survey was conducted among 1449 doctors and nurses in five hospitals in China between October and November 2020 during the "post-outbreak" period. The prevalence of PTSS assessed by the Posttraumatic Symptom Sca

Parallel Process of Posttraumatic Stress and Externalizing Problems Among Youth at High Risk for Victimization.

Research shows comorbidity between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and externalizing problems among polyvictimized youth. However, the impact of polyvictimization on the longitudinal co-development of PTSS and distinct forms of externalizing problems remains unclear. Growth trajectory modeling was used to address this gap. At ages 8, 12, and 16, polyvictimization was measured using youth, caregiver, and official records; whereas youth self-reported PTSS and caregivers reported aggression and delinquency. Results demonstrate that changes in PTSS and each externalizing domain were independe

Effectiveness of youth psychotherapy delivered remotely: A meta-analysis.

Reports on remote psychotherapies for youth (e.g., technology-based treatment) suggest it is acceptable, feasible, and useful in overcoming logistical barriers to treatment. But how effective is remote care? To find out, PsycINFO and PubMed were searched from 1960 through 2020, supplemented by journal searches and reference trails, to identify randomized controlled trials of youth psychotherapy for anxiety (including obsessive-compulsive disorder and trauma), depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or conduct problems, in which all therapeutic contact occurred remotely. Sexual and romantic relationships among people experiencing homelessness: A scoping review.

Homelessness is widely recognized as a pervasive issue. Despite increasing research on factors affecting the health and well-being of people who are homeless, one that remains relatively understudied is the role of romantic and sexual relationships. Given that this population has the same needs for intimacy and closeness as anyone else, it is important to understand how these relationships occur, what barriers exist in developing and maintaining them, and what is their impact. This scoping review aimed to (a) characterize the nature of research that has examined sexual and romantic relationshi

Emotional and behavioural problems of children and adolescents who stutter: Comparison with typically developing peers.

PURPOSE: There are several studies showing contradictory results on concurrent emotional and behavioural problems of children and adolescents who stutter (CAWS). This study aimed to identify whether there is a difference between Turkish-speaking CAWS and their typically developing peers (TDP) in emotional and behavioural problems. METHODS: The study group consisted of 45 CAWS, aged between 3.40 and 15.92 years, and the control group consisted of 45 TDP, aged between 3.15 and 16.80 years. Participants were divided into three age groups: early childhood (0-6 years), middle childhood (7-11 years

Gentle remedies: Restoring faith in the first step of nonpharmacological infant mental health care for the prevention and treatment of "disruptive behavior".

Parents and healthcare providers are reported to be "desperate" for solutions for dealing with temper tantrums and other extreme "disruptive behaviors." Reports state that at least 10,000 and as many as 20,000 infants under the age of two in 2014 were prescribed drugs such as risperidone, quetiapine, and other antipsychotic medications, suggesting that parents may have lost faith in their inner abilities to create an environment for their infant. Dr. Maria Montessori, concluded from her work that the nervous troubles of many "difficult" children can be traced to one of the most "harmful forms

[Psychosis and behavioural problems as first symptoms of brain tumour?].

A craniopharyngioma is a rare, slow-growing tumour in the pituitary gland. Brain tumours usually present with obvious neurological or other physical symptoms, whereas psychiatric symptoms as primary signs are rare. The presented case, in which psychosis and behavioural problems predominated, concerned a 42-year-old patient. Although the tumour was very large when diagnosed, there were no prior neurological signs or signs in the blood sample. Final imaging and histology confirmed the diagnosis of a craniopharyngioma. This case indicates the importance of being sufficiently alert as a psychiatri

Response to Allen (2018): Points of agreement and disagreement on reactive attachment disorder.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD) is a very rare, understudied, and controversial disorder. Research in Developmental Disabilities (RIDD) recently published our research study, "Reactive attachment/disinhibited social engagement disorders: Callous-unemotional traits and comorbidity" (Mayes, Waschbusch, Calhoun, Breaux, & Baweja, 2017) investigating comorbidity in children with RAD and demonstrating a high prevalence of conduct disorder and callous-unemotional traits, consistent with previous research. Allen (2018) responded with a paper published in RIDD criticizing our study and offering his

Gambling disorder in adolescents: what do we know about this social problem and its consequences?

Gambling disorder (GD) is a psychiatric condition and it is characterized by a maladaptive pattern of gambling behavior that persists despite negative consequences in major areas of life functioning. In Italy, CNR (National Research Council) underlined how over 17 million, 42.8% of the population aged 15-64 have a gambling behavior. Among them, there are over one million students, aged 15-19, equal to 44.2% of Italian students; the number of minors in Italy with GD in 2017 was 580,000, equal to 33.6%. Various psychosocial treatment models have been adapted for GD; on the other hand no drug has

Decision making in the short and long run: repeated gambles and rationality.

Experimental evidence indicates that decision makers who reject a single play of a gamble may accept repeated plays of that gamble. The rationality of this pattern of preference has been investigated beginning with Samuelson's colleague (SC) who gained notoriety in a well-known paper. SC's pattern of preference is commonly viewed as a behavioural anomaly. Researchers from branches of psychology and economics have analysed the choice and, despite much debate, there remains considerable confusion. An axiomatic analysis of SC's choice has been used to motivate experimental studies in several disc

What do we know about cognitive and motivational effects of small group tutorials in problem-based learning?

Students collaborating in small groups is a characteristic of problem-based learning (PBL) that is receiving increased consideration in the literature. In this paper findings from studies in this area are synthesized and discussed. A distinction is made between studies focusing on cognitive effects of group learning and studies focusing on motivational effects of group learning. Studies concentrating on the cognitive effects of small-group PBL seem to demonstrate that activation of prior knowledge, recall of information, causal reasoning or theory building, cognitive conflicts leading to conce

Considering the best choice: effects of the salience and accessibility of alternatives on attitude--decision consistency.

The authors examined how the presence or absence of specified alternatives influences which alternatives are considered and what choice is made. The accessibility of alternatives as a moderator of the correspondence between attitudes and decisions also was investigated. In Study 1, the accessibility of alternatives was an important determinant of choice when decisions options were unspecified. The results of Studies 2 and 3 suggest that the potential for attitude-decision correspondence is high when (a) the decision context makes the alternatives salient or (b) alternatives are easily accessed

Early bedtime routines and behavioral outcomes among children from low-income families: Mediating role of emotion regulation.

The establishment of early bedtime routine is essential for children's emotion and behavioral outcomes. Less is known, however, about the lo … nd 36 months. Children's emotion regulation was drawn from interviewer assessments at 36 months and problem behaviors were reported by mothers when the child was approximately at age 10. Results indicated that children with consistent early bedtime routine were better able to regulate their emotions at age three. Also, emotion regulation at age three mediated the …

The relationship between bullying victimization and problematic behaviors: A focus on the intrapersonal emotional competence and interpersonal social competence.

BACKGROUND: Evidence consistently demonstrated that bullying victimization was associated with problematic behaviors among adolescents. However, scant attention has been given to simultaneous comparisons of the impacts of two distinct forms of victimization, traditional bullying victimization and cyberbullying victimization. In addition, the mechanisms underlying the relationship between bullying victimization and problem behavior remain inadequately explored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the correlation between bullying victimization and problematic behaviors, as well as the mediat…

A long-term look at "early starters": Predicting adult psychosocial outcomes from childhood conduct problem trajectories.

Current evidence suggests that multiple pathways of "early-starting" conduct problems exist, including persisting and declining trajectories. Since relatively little is known about the early onset-declining pathway, this study examined the long-term outcomes of different childhood conduct problem trajectories in a disproportionately high-risk sample (N = 754). Parents reported on children's conduct problems at six time points (kindergarten to grade 7). At age 25, psychosocial outcomes were assessed across five domains (psychopathology, substance use, risky sexual behavior, antisocial behavior,

Persistent Changes in Child Behavior After Early Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: To document longitudinal changes in internalizing and externalizing behavioral symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) sustained in early childhood (i.e., between 18 and 60 months of age). METHODS: Participants (N = 226) were recruited to one of three groups: children with mTBI, typically developing children and orthopedic injured children. The Child Behavior Checklist was used to document the presence of internalizing and externalizing behaviors at 6, 18, and 30 months postinjury. Linear mixed-model analyses were used to examine group effects on the trajectory of interna

Metacognition reconsidered: implications for intervention research.

Metacognitive training techniques have been used successfully to improve children's problem-solving skills. The concept of metacognition needs further refinement, however, if it is to continue to be useful as an explanatory construct. Specifically, we argue that more attention needs to be paid to how metacognitive abilities are acquired, how this knowledge could be used to help improve the performance of children with learning difficulties, and how metacognition may be related to other self-evaluation processes.

Modulating the activity of right temporo-parietal junction by anodal tDCS enhances the agent's repayment in hold-up game.

Hold-up problem is very common in non-contractible relation-specific investment transactions. And this problem can affect by trust, cooperation and altruism behavior of human beings. Recent neuroscience researches had explored a network of right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) involved in human cooperation and altruism behavior. The purpose of this study is to modulate the activation of rTPJ through transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and to study the influence of rTPJ on investment and offer behavior in hold-up game. The results of our study showed that the anodal stimulation sig
