Bimanual control of position and force in people with multiple sclerosis: preliminary results.

Proprioceptive deficits are frequent and disabling symptoms of neurological diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS). These deficits are poorly understood partly because of the limited sensitivity and reproducibility of clinical measures. However, their assessment is crucial in planning and evaluating rehabilitative treatments. Therefore, we designed a device and a protocol for assessing proprioceptive deficits by evaluating the position and force control performance. We focused on bimanual tasks, as most daily life activities require the combined use of both hands while MS induces coordinatio

A novel anatomy-based five-points eight-line-segments technique for precision subtotal tongue reconstruction: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: A no-flap design based on actual tongue anatomy has been reported to achieve precise reconstruction, but large carcinologic tongue defects remain extremely challenging to treat. The aim of this pilot study was to explore an anatomy-based flap design for precision subtotal tongue reconstruction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients were randomly divided into two groups, a "five-points eight-line-segments" (FIPELS) technique flap design group (18 patients) and a conventional surgery group (17 patients), to undergo subtotal tongue reconstruction. All patients received an antero

A Survey of Frozen Phantom Limb Experiences: Are Experiences Compatible With Current Theories.

There are over two million individuals living with amputations in the United States. Almost all will experience the feeling of the amputated limb as still present, termed phantom limb sensation (PLS). Over 85% will also experience excruciatingly painful sensations known as phantom limb pain (PLP). Additionally some amputees also experience a sensation of the phantom limb in which the limb is immobile or stuck in a normal or abnormal anatomical position, termed frozen phantom sensations. When an amputee experiences a frozen limb they report that they are unable to move the limb, and sometimes r

Neuroanatomical Structures in Human Extraocular Muscles and Their Potential Implication in the Development of Oculomotor Disorders.

The potential role of sensory feedback from human extraocular muscles has been subjected to considerable speculation in the ophthalmic literature. Extraocular muscles pull against a fairly even load and do not initiate a stretch reflex, even when the eyes are directed toward the boundaries of their respective field of action. These unique working conditions and physiological properties have led to the notion that the sensory signal arising from receptors in extraocular muscles differs from the conventional proprioceptive signal arising from their somatic counterparts. The interest in the recep

The effect of ankle taping on detection of inversion-eversion movements in participants with recurrent ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: Taping is often used to counter the proprioceptive deficit after joint injury such as ankle sprain. However, the effect of taping on proprioceptive acuity at the ankle is unclear, with conflicting findings. HYPOTHESIS: Application of tape improves detection of inversion and eversion movements at the ankle. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: The 70% threshold for movement detection was measured in 16 participants with recurrent ankle sprain under 2 conditions: with the ankle taped or untaped. The threshold for movement detection was examined at 3 velocities (0.1

Correlations between posturographic findings and symptoms in subjects with fractures of the condylar head of the mandible.

Our study examined the posture of 15 patients who had sustained a simple unilateral or bilateral fracture of the condylar head of the mandible as a result of sports or traffic accidents. Following preliminary testing of vestibular function, the patients underwent balance testing: Romberg test with eyes closed (EC), Romberg EC and bite test (ECBT), EC and head retroflexed (ECR). The study parameters were: surface (S) of the statokinesigram, stomatognathic influence index related to S (SSI), and postural oscillations on the frontal plane (X). In keeping with the literature, we felt that the foll

Neck muscle vibration in full cues affects pointing.

Vibration of the dorsolateral neck stimulates proprioceptors that are normally active during head movement; this induces a visual illusion o … t between cues used in perception of body-centric position used to guide action, which include neck proprioception, and those used in perception of motion, for which object-relative retinal information is sufficient.

Improvement of posture stability by vibratory stimulation following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Surgical reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) may reduce, but it does not always eliminate, knee and body instability because of a persisting proprioceptive deficit. In order to enhance body stability, a new protocol of treatment has been proposed consisting of mechanical vibration (100 Hz frequency and < 20 microm amplitude) of the quadriceps muscle in the leg that has undergone ACL reconstruction. In our trials, stimulation was performed when the quadriceps muscle was kept isometrically contracted. Treatment was started one month after surgery. Vibration was applied for sho

Runx3 is essential for the target-specific axon pathfinding of trkc-expressing dorsal root ganglion neurons.

Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons project their axons to specific target layers in the gray matter of the spinal cord, according to their sensory modality (Neuron 30 (2001), 707; Cell 101 (2000), 485; Neuron 31 (2001), 59; J. Comp. Neurol. 380 (1997), 215; Sensory Neurons, Oxford Univ. Press, New York, 1992, p. 131). Expression of runt-related Runx/AML genes (Mech. Dev. 109 (2001), 413) on subtypes of DRG neurons suggests their involvement in lamina-specific afferent differentiation and maturation. Here we show that Runx3-/- mice display severe limb ataxia and abnormal posture and that most o

6-hydroxydopamine lesion in the A8 cell group of cats produces a short-lasting decreased accuracy in goal-directed forepaw-movements.

Recently, feline studies have shown that a lesion in the retrorubral area, which includes the dopaminergic A8 cell group, produces motor programming deficits inherent to a hypofunction of the A9 system. A hypofunction in the striatal terminal area of A9 fibers, in turn, is known to produce a hypofunction of its first-order output station, namely the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNR). The integrity of the SNR allows animals to execute (1) 'postural adjustments that rely on proprioceptive stimuli that originate in body parts at rest' and (2) 'non-externally guided' targeting movements. [Effect of stimulation of the spinal cord on phasic and tonic reflexes in patients with central motor neuron damage].

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a method enabling the control of increased muscle tonus to be achieved in various spinal cord injuries. Polyelectromyographic (PEMG) methods were used for neurophysiological assessment of the degree of cord damage and persistent spinal reflexes as well as supramedullary influences. The analysed material comprised 40 PEMG records in 19 patients with spastic paraparesis or paraplegia after cord injury, cord tumour or multiple sclerosis. In 15 cases tentative epidural cord stimulation was done and 11 patients received implantation of a system for long-term stimula

Pointing at objects in other rooms: young children's sensitivity to perspective after walking with and without vision.

Locomotion alters the spatial structure of an observer's perspective, that is, the network of observer to environment distances and directions. The purpose of the present 6 experiments was to investigate the sensitivity of 12-48-month-olds to changes in perspective that are occluded from view by walls and by darkness. To assess sensitivity, children were shown a target object in one room, walked into an adjacent room and asked to point in the straight-line direction at the target. In Experiment 1, 42 12-48-month-olds were tested and results indicated that children older than 36 months responde

Distracted cervical spinal fusion for management of caudal cervical spondylomyelopathy in large-breed dogs.

Using an autogenous bone graft (obtained from the iliac crest), 4-mm cancellous bone screws, and polymethylmethacrylate, a distracted cervical spinal fusion technique was performed on 10 dogs with myelographic evidence of caudal cervical spondylomyelopathy. All dogs had evidence of dynamic soft tissue spinal cord compression, as indicated by flexion, extension, and traction myelographic views. Of the 10 dogs, 4 previously had undergone surgery by use of ventral slot or cervical disk fenestration techniques, and their neurologic status had deteriorated after the original surgery. Preoperative n
