BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of differential diagnosis of prostate specific antigen decline rate (PSADR) per week, degree of prostatic collapse (DPC) and tissue signal rate of prostate (TSRP) between prostatitis and prostate cancer.

Prostatitis is a common cause of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) elevation but can masquerade underlying prostate cancer. We present a case of a man with undiagnosed prostate cancer whose initial PSA elevation of > 999.0 ng/mL was initially ascribed entirely to prostatitis. In the setting of possible prostatitis clinicians should avoid the knee jerk reaction to blame the totality of PSA elevation on prostatitis. A greatly elevated PSA may be a sign of an underlying prostate cancer and should be explored in the proper clinical setting.

Recently, the concept of PSA density has been introduced in order to increase the diagnosis sensitivity obtained with serum PSA dosing. The usefulness of this parameter has been assessed in 47 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BHP) and 26 patient with non-disseminated prostate adenocarcinoma. OBJECTIVE: To produce lower temperatures safely in the prostate, and better protect the rectum , as well as maximize the technique of cryosurgical ablation to better eradicate prostate cancer.
METHODS: A total of 10 consecutive patients underwent total, subtotal, or focal cryosurgical ablation, with saline hydrodissection. We found lethal prostate temperatures and safer rectal temperatures. One patient developed a very small rectourethral fistula that healed with catheter drainage alone, prompting a revised technique.
