PURPOSE: To report toxicity, local control, enucleation, and survival rates for patients with peripapillary choroidal melanoma treated with proton therapy in Canada.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with peripapillary choroidal melanoma (≤ 2 mm from optic disc) treated between 1995 and 2007 at the only Canadian proton therapy facility. PURPOSE: Brain abscesses often present an aetiological dilemma. Microscopy is insensitive and culture techniques are time consuming. Hence, a new rapid technique in vitro Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1HMRS) was evaluated for its usefulness in the identification of aetiology of brain abscesses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 39 pus specimens from brain abscesses were subjected to in vitro 1HMRS. These pus specimens were also processed by conventional culture methods. The spectral patterns generated by in vitro 1HMRS were further correlated with culture results.

We report the clinical, MR imaging, and proton MR spectroscopy findings in a middle-aged woman with proved methadone-induced toxic leukoencephalopathy. The imaging characteristics of this unusual condition have been reported only rarely in the medical literature. We show that the imaging findings in methadone-induced toxic leukoencephalopathy are similar, though not identical, to previously reported cases of neurologic deterioration due to heroin inhalation.

Muscle metabolites were obtained by in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of 3 patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), 6 patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and 10 normal volunteers. A 7-month-old boy is reported with acute metabolic crisis of maple syrup urine disease. A reversible intramyelinic type of edema was noted by diffusion MRI which completely resolved in 3 months in accordance with good clinical outcome. Proton MR spectroscopy revealed decreased NAA, and presence of methyl resonances of branched chain amino acids at 0.9 ppm, and lactic acid in the initial examination. After 3 months, NAA returned to normal, and lactic acid disappeared. The methyl resonance of branched chain amino acids, however, remained.
