Anterior mandibular zone safe for implants.

During implantology procedures, one of the most serious complications is damage of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). The mandibular incisive nerve is described as a terminal branch of the IAN and provides innervation to the lower anterior teeth and canines. The incisive nerve and canal are located in the interforaminal area. Although numerous studies report IAN damage during implant placement, few reports in the literature describes sensory disturbances, such as neuropathic pain, related to mandibular incisive nerve damage. The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the

A stepwise approach to the visual interpretation of CT-based myocardial perfusion.

Cardiovascular anatomic and functional testing have been longstanding and key components of cardiac risk assessment. As part of that strategy, CT-based imaging has made steady progress, with coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) now established as the most sensitive noninvasive strategy for assessment of significant coronary artery disease. Myocardial CT perfusion imaging (CTP), as the functional equivalent of coronary CTA, is being tested in currently ongoing multicenter trials and is proposed to enhance the accuracy of coronary CTA alone. However, unlike coronary CTA that has publis

Quantitative morphometric outcomes following the Melbourne method of total vault remodeling for scaphocephaly.

The Melbourne method of total vault remodeling was developed at The Royal Children's Hospital (Melbourne) to address all phenotypic aspects of scaphocephaly. To quantitatively evaluate this technique, a retrospective analysis was performed on 33 consecutive patients who underwent the Melbourne procedure between October 2004 and June 2007. To monitor outcomes, three-dimensional digital surface photography was used, obtaining 4 anthropometric measurements (cranial length, cranial width, head circumference, auricular head height) preoperatively and postoperatively. To assess the effect on continu

The width:thickness ratio of the patella: an aid in knee arthroplasty.

Establishing the appropriate size of the patellar implant-bone composite is one of the important steps ensuring functional success in arthroplasty. Conventionally, the patella is measured intraoperatively and its thickness is used to guide the depth of resection. However, in a diseased joint, this may not reflect the native patellar thickness. We studied the relationship between the patellar thickness and various patellar dimensions on three-dimensional reconstructed computed tomographic scans from 37 normal adult knees. Patellar width correlated with thickness. The average patellar width:thic

A novel method for pulmonary embolism detection in CTA images.

In this paper, we propose a new computer-aided detection (CAD) - based method to detect pulmonary embolism (PE) in computed tomography angiography images (CTAI). Since lung vessel segmentation is the main objective to provide high sensitivity in PE detection, this method performs accurate lung vessel segmentation. To concatenate clogged vessels due to PEs, the starting region of PEs and some reference points (RPs) are determined. These RPs are detected according to the fixed anatomical structures. After lung vessel tree is segmented, the region, intensity, and size of PEs are used to distingui

Validation of Varian's SmartAdapt® deformable image registration algorithm for clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Re-contouring of structures on consecutive planning computed tomography (CT) images for patients that exhibit anatomical changes is elaborate and may negatively impact the turn-around time if this is required for many patients. This study was therefore initiated to validate the accuracy and usefulness of automatic contour propagation for head and neck cancer patients using SmartAdapt® which is the deformable image registration (DIR) application in Varian's Eclipse™ treatment planning system. METHODS: CT images of eight head and neck cancer patients with multiple planning CTs were

Deep-learning framework for osteoporosis screening on low-dose X-rays: Addressing image quality variability and cross-ethnic database Heterogeneity.

The AIXA Osteo model architecture (X1AI-Osteo) has undergone internal validation in Taiwan, demonstrating its capability to evaluate osteoporosis and predict T-scores reliably. Nonetheless, its efficacy in alternative clinical environments has not been confirmed yet. This study uses real-world data from a Japanese clinical environment to externally evaluate the AIXA Osteo model and improves upon common image capture discrepancies in cross-domain applications and diagnostic variability arising from disparate reference databases. We used a structure-preserving CycleGAN and a large-mask inpaintin

Radiomic analysis of cohort-specific diagnostic errors in reading dense mammograms using artificial intelligence.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate radiologists' interpretation errors when reading dense screening mammograms using a radiomics-based artificial intelligence approach. METHODS: Thirty-six radiologists from China and Australia read 60 dense mammograms. For each cohort, we identified normal areas that looked suspicious of cancer and the malignant areas containing cancers. Then radiomic features were extracted from these identified areas and random forest models were trained to recognize the areas that were most frequently linked to diagnostic errors within each cohort. The performance

Improved PAA algorithm for breast mass detection in mammograms.

Mammography screening is instrumental in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer by identifying masses in mammograms. With the rapid development of deep learning, numerous deep learning-based object detection algorithms have been explored for mass detection studies. However, these methods often yield a high false positive rate per image (FPPI) while achieving a high true positive rate (TPR). To maintain a higher TPR while also ensuring lower FPPI, we improved the Probability Anchor Assignment (PAA) algorithm to enhance the detection capability for mammographic characteristics with o
