BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne illness in North America. Reported cases of LD have increased from approximately 10,000 cases annually in 1991 to >25,000 cases in 2014. Greater recognition, enhanced surveillance, and public education have contributed to the increased prevalence, as have geographic expansion and the number of infected ticks. Cases are reported primarily in the Northeastern United States, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, with children having the highest incidence of LD among all age groups. The increased incidence and prevalence of LD in the United States

BACKGROUND: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) has been in practice for more than 100 years. However, research in novel routes and delivery methods of immunotherapy to treat allergic rhinitis (AR) and conjunctivitis has only recently occurred in the United States, where the predominant form of AIT provided is largely via a subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) route. AIT may prevent new sensitizations, improve symptoms, decrease medication usage, and prevent allergic asthma. Although AIT is the only potentially curative treatment for AR, access and adherence continue to be problematic. Only a fraction o

Bites by poisonous snakes are rare dermatologic emergencies. A 43-year-old woman was bitten on her right forefinger by an adder during a hiking vacation in Austria. Her right arm and chest wall became swollen and then hemorrhagic, but she responded well to analgesics and immobilization. Administration of a specific antiserum was not necessary because of the lack of a systemic reaction.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiology of emergency department mammalian animal exposures and to compare adult and pediatric exposure characteristics.
METHODS: This was a prospective case series of patients presenting with animal exposure-related complaints from July 1996 to July 1998. Eleven university-affiliated, geographically diverse, urban emergency departments (EMERGEncy ID NET) participated.
RESULTS: A total of 1,631 exposures (80.5%) were from dogs, 267 (13.2%) from cats, 88 (4.3%) from rodents or rabbits, 18 (0.9%) from raccoons and wild carnivores, eight (0.4%) from livestock, ni

Recent worldwide terrorist acts and hoaxes have heightened awareness that incidents involving weapons of mass destruction (WMD) may occur in the United States. With federal funding assistance, local domestic preparedness programs have been initiated to train and equip emergency services and emergency department personnel in the management of large numbers of casualties exposed to nuclear, biological, or chemical (NBC) agents. Hospital pharmacies will be required to provide antidotes, antibiotics, antitoxins, and other pharmaceuticals in large amounts and have the capability for prompt procurem

The difficulties encountered by the vertical control programme of the gambiense human african trypanosomiasis in various countries, and the achievements of the primary health care policies on the other hand, justify the consideration of an alternative operational management model for this disease. The alternative model presented here is the integrated model. The authors define the concept of integration, discuss its justifications and describe the operational model. Integration is not a goal in itself and could be completed by a vertical approach of the problem in function of the local situati

INTRODUCTION: Accidents involving dog attacks are very common, which makes this type of accident a global public health issue. The estimates point to 20% of the victims of such accidents seeking care in health units, and half of them being children. In addition to acute injuries, dog attacks might result in fractures, infections, scars, and psychological traumas. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological profile of dog attacks to children under 14 years old assisted in a pediatric emergency service in Brazil.
METHODS: The database of the Information and Toxicological Assistance Center

The link between circulating glucocorticoids and leptin in beef calves has not been explored but has been noted in several studies. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of exogenous glucocorticoids given at birth and 1 day of age on serum leptin concentrations in beef calves. Ruminant animals secrete leptin, which is thought to be important for the programming of the hypothalamic appetite centers. Angus crossbred cows (n = 31) bred via natural service were utilized for this experiment. At parturition (day 0), calf BW was recorded and each calf was infused intravenously with either

BACKGROUND: Although mustelids occur worldwide and include a wide range of species, little is known about the diseases affecting them. Mustelids have regularly been submitted for post mortem investigation in the framework of the program for general wildlife health surveillance in Switzerland, which has been in place for nearly 60 years. We performed a retrospective analysis of the necropsy reports on mustelids submitted to the diagnostic service of the University of Bern. The aims of this study were to present an overview of the causes of mortality and morbidity observed in these carnivores, t

BACKGROUND: The orf virus of sheep and goats is one of several zoonotic parapoxviruses. In the ovine/caprine host it causes contagious ecthyma (contagious pustular dermatitis, scabby mouth), but in humans it normally causes solitary or clustered orf lesions, typically on hands, arms or face. In addition to disease in the animals, the virus can be quite a nuisance as an occupational hazard in farmers and butchers. Clinical diagnosis is often possible, but laboratory diagnosis is sometimes necessary. For virus isolation, primary ovine or bovine cells, not routinely present, are needed. Serologic

The shortage of organs, breakthroughs in research, involvement of biotechnology companies, absence of ethically more acceptable alternatives, and a vaguely perceived "time to put man on the moon" feeling have contributed to the current reawakening of interest in xenotransplantation. The focus of ethical attention has changed from the moral correctness of using animals for research/therapy to an increasingly appreciated danger of the establishment and spread of xenozoonoses in recipients, their contacts, and the general public. The United Kingdom has established an embargo on clinical trials an

Genital infection with Schistosoma haematobium is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Epidemiological studies have observed that genital schistosomiasis is associated with an increased odd of HIV infection among women. We used mathematical modeling to explore the potential impact of mass preventive chemotherapy against schistosomiasis on HIV transmission in three sub-Saharan Africa countries: Angola, Kenya, and Zambia. We developed a model of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) and HIV transmission dynamics, fitting it to data of HIV and S. haematobium prevalences as well as co-infection. We sim

For South American camelids (SAC) and, to a lesser extent, Old World camels (OWC), an increasing demand for veterinary services has developed in Central Europe in recent years, with specific knowledge of the reproductive endocrinology of this species being particularly in demand for the management of breeding farms. Compared to many other domestic animal species, relatively little reliable information is available on the endocrine control of pregnancy and parturition in camelids. However, some significant differences to other domestic ungulate species are evident. Knowledge of pregnancy-associ

BACKGROUND: Effective disinfection is crucial to good hygiene practices and biosecurity in veterinary settings. Information about disinfectants and their use in veterinary practices in sub-Saharan Africa is scarce. This study aimed at mapping available veterinary disinfectants for developing a prototype digital disinfectant database in six sub-Saharan African countries (Democratic Republic of the Congo - DRC, Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, and Uganda) to support biosecurity and hygienic practices.
METHODS: Data on disinfectants available for veterinary use in the six countries were collec

National evidence on cattle vaccination, disease-control practices, and producer-reported disease remains limited in Ecuador. This study assessed holding-level participation in preventive cattle-health activities and factors associated with self-reported disease, focusing on Manabí. We analysed anonymised public-use microdata from the 2025 Continuous Agricultural Production and Area Survey (ESPAC); all four outcomes were based on producer reports and were not independently verified against veterinary or administrative records. The principal design-adjusted analysis included 10,588 positive-wei

The human body in motion is typically in service of everyday tasks - but it can also be aesthetically pleasing, as in dance. Is there a common property underlying how we perceive and appreciate human motion in both everyday and aesthetic contexts? Here we focus on one of the most basic features of motion: the speed at which it unfolds. In a 'set-the-pace' task, people adjusted the playback speed of a broad range of videos to what was "maximally pleasing" to them. This method revealed three distinct correlates of aesthetic speed preferences across multiple experiments and replications. First, w

Since 2021, United Kingdom (UK) residents have faced a decline in disposable income termed the Cost-of-Living Crisis (COLC). For pet owners, this has been compounded by the costs of veterinary care rising faster than the rate of inflation. Animal welfare charities have reported increased rates of relinquishment and owners making cost-reducing savings on multiple aspects of their dogs' care. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the nature and prevalence of impacts of the COLC on a cohort of dogs acquired in 2020 and their owners. A cross-sectional survey collected data between 2022 and 202

INTRODUCTION: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) affects an estimated 1.8-3.6% of UK school children and up to 27% of children in care. FASD remains vastly under-diagnosed and under-recorded in UK electronic patient records (EPRs), leading to significant challenges for individuals with the condition. In 2024, we developed new SNOMED clinical terms aligned to UK national guidelines and quality standards for FASD.
AIMS: Through collaborative knowledge mobilisation (KM), we aimed to: i) raise awareness of the importance of utilising these new clinical terms; ii) identify barriers to FASD cod
