The prevalence of ocular disease and blindness in 2,092 Thai subjects, aged 60 years and over, in 33 communities in the vicinity of Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok was studied. The subjects were examined by a team which consisted of 3-4 ophthalmologists, 6 nurses and a trainee health officer. The history, visual acuity and ocular tension were recorded. PURPOSE: Before invasion of the visual axis, pterygia typically induce with-the-rule astigmatism, which can be visually significant. In this study, we attempted to assess the quantitative relation between pterygium size and induced corneal astigmatism using corneal topography and digital imaging.
METHODS: Thirty-three eyes of 25 patients with primary pterygia were evaluated using corneal topography (TMS), slit-lamp photography, and digital imaging to correlate parameters of pterygium size with induced corneal astigmatism at the 3- and 6-mm optical zones.

PURPOSE: An association between the floppy eyelid syndrome and the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (O.S.A.) has been reported. We studied eyelid tissue elasticity and other ophthalmologic findings in a large number of patients with sleep disorders.

Peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) is a rare but serious inflammatory eye condition that can complicate rheumatoid arthritis. PUK can be a warning sign of impending vasculitis, and cytotoxic therapy may be necessary to induce remission. We have encountered three patients with PUK in the past year. Two patients had long-standing quiescent rheumatoid arthritis who developed photophobia. Diagnosis was made by slit lamp examination. This case report presents a rare instance of phthiriasis palpebrarum in a 7-year-old female patient. The patient complained of bilateral eyelid pruritus and erythema lasting for 3 weeks.
