Health problems in teenage daily smokers versus nonsmokers, Norway, 1995-1997: the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study.

Increased morbidity among teenage smokers has been reported, but specific current health problems and medication use other than of alcohol and narcotics have received less attention. The aim of this study was to examine the association between health problems and daily smoking in teenagers. Ninety percent of all teenagers attending junior high or high schools participated in a cross-sectional study conducted in Nord-Trøndelag County, Norway, 1995-1997; included were 8,040 students aged 13-18 years. Information on smoking habits, health problems, medication use, and use of health services was o…

Individual differences in cue reactivity among smokers trying to quit: effects of gender and cue type.

Across studies, when presented with a variety of smoking cues, smokers and ex-smokers evidence distinct patterns of self-reported, physiological, and behavioral reactions. However, few studies have compared more than two different kinds of cues within the same experiment. Furthermore, despite the importance of examining the moderating effect of gender on smoking outcomes, few studies have examined gender differences in smoking cue reactivity. We examined the effect of eight distinct cue manipulations on heart rate, mean arterial pressure, smoking urges, and self-efficacy in a sample of 129 par…

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter constituents and lung cancer risk in Chinese never-smokers.

Although long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been linked to lung cancer incidence in never-smokers (LCINS), evidence for PM2.5 constituents remains limited. This study included 262,785 never-smokers from the China Kadoorie Biobank, among whom 2646 LCINS cases were identified. Annual average concentrations of PM2.5 and its major constituents during 2004-2018 were obtained from the ChinaHighAirPollutants database. Time-dependent Cox proportional hazards models estimated constituent associations with LCINS incidence, and Quantile-based g-computation assessed the importance o…

Proteomic Mediators of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Phenotypes and Coronary Artery Calcification Burden in Ever Smokers.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) increases cardiovascular disease risk. Coronary artery calcification (CAC) predicts cardiovascular events and mortality in COPD. We hypothesized that plasma proteins linked to pulmonary phenotypes mediate CAC burden. METHODS: Pulmonary function, emphysema, airway wall thickening, Agatston CAC scores (inverse normal transformed), and relative abundance of 1305 plasma proteins (log-transformed) were assessed in 989 Phase 1 COPDGene (Genetic Epidemiology of COPD) participants. Proteins associated with both pulmonary phenotypes (FEV1[forced

Acute Exposure to Cadmium Triggers NCOA4-Mediated Ferritinophagy and Ferroptosis in Never-Smokers Oral Cancer Cells.

Cadmium (Cd), a carcinogenic component of tobacco, is a recognized risk factor for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying Cd-induced cytotoxicity in OSCC remain largely undefined. Here, we demonstrate that acute Cd exposure triggers ferroptosis in CAL27 OSCC cells derived from never-smokers, but not in SCC154 cells derived from smokers. Mechanistically, Cd outcompetes Fe, causing early iron depletion and activating the nuclear receptor coactivator 4 (NCOA4)-mediated ferritinophagy. This process enhances the labile iron pool, promotes mitochondrial rea…

Evidence of Organ-Specific Metal Accumulation: ICP-MS Elemental Analysis of Autopsy Tissues of Tobacco Smokers.

Cigarette smoking exposes individuals to numerous toxic substances, including heavy metals. Smokers are at risk due to the accumulation of these substances in various tissues. Objective: To compare the concentrations of 41 elements in 11 brain regions, the spinal cord, the bronchial, the lungs, and the liver in smokers (n = 11) and non-smokers (n = 17). Elemental composition was determined by ICP-MS after wet digestion in a microwave system. The following toxic elements were detected at levels of µg/g w.w.: Al, Cd, Pb, Ba, As, Ni, and Tl. Significantly higher concentrations of Al were detected…

The pathogenic mutations in smokers with non-small cell lung cancer: a next-generation sequencing study.

BACKGROUND: Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI)-targeted therapy has significantly improved the quality life of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Smoking is the main pathogenic factor of lung cancer. A number of the studies have analyzed smoking patients and nonsmoking patients as grouping factors, but few have examined the characteristic gene mutations in these groups. This study thus aimed to examine the characteristic pathogenic mutations in smokers with NSCLC. METHODS: A total of 302 smokers with stage IIIB-IV NSCLC were recruited from Jilin Cancer Hospital between Ju…

Attentional bias in young adult tobacco cigarette smokers and e-cigarette users: an eye-tracking study.

RATIONALE: Attentional bias (AB) is a key behavioural feature known to contribute to the maintenance of tobacco use; however, little information exists on whether e-cigarette users display an AB. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to measure differences in AB between exclusive cigarette smokers and exclusive e-cigarette users. Our secondary aim was to compare overnight abstinence and sated conditions on AB within e-cigarette users and cigarette smokers. METHODS: Participants included exclusive e-cigarette users (n = 28), cigarette smokers (n = 29), and healthy non-nicotine-using controls (n = 18). AB was …

Functional Connectivity Disruptions in Grey Matter Volume-Altered Brain Regions Among Male Smokers: A Neuroimaging Study.

This study aimed to investigate whether structural brain alterations in smokers are accompanied by synchronized changes in functional connectivity, with a focus on understanding the neural mechanisms underlying smoking addiction. We conducted a meta-analysis of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies using the Seed Mapping software package to identify consistent grey matter changes in smokers' brains, which were subsequently defined as regions of interest (ROIs). Resting-state functional connectivity between these ROIs and whole-brain voxels was analysed in 53 male smokers and 38 non-smokers. Ad…

Targeted Screening of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms in Female Smokers: Inconsiderate Overdiagnosis or Chance for Better Health?

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) causes a substantial proportion of all deaths among middle-aged people, especially women. Because female smokers in particular have a high risk of aSAH and subarachnoid hemorrhage deaths, targeted screening of 50- to 60-year-old female smokers could be justified as a preventive action to reduce premature deaths and morbidity. METHODS: This prospective screening study has been performed at Helsinki University Hospital in the Department of Neurosurgery in 2 phases during 2020 and 2023 to 2024. To minimize recruitment bias, the Helsinki Bioba…

Increased Tertiary Lymphoid Structures are Associated with Exaggerated Lung Tissue Damage in Smokers with Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cigarette smoking exacerbates the progression of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). The role of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) in chronic lung diseases has gained attention; however, it remains unclear whether smoking-exacerbated lung damage in TB is associated with TLS. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of pulmonary TLS in smokers with TB and to explore the possible role of TLS in smoking-related lung injury in TB. METHODS: Lung tissues from 36 male patients (18 smokers and 18 non-smokers) who underwent surgical resection for pulmonary TB were included in this study. P…

The Smokers Health Multiple ACtions (SMAC-1) Trial: Study Design and Results of the Baseline Round.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer screening with low-dose helical computed tomography (LDCT) reduces mortality in high-risk subjects. Cigarette smoking is linked to up to 90% of lung cancer deaths. Even more so, it is a key risk factor for many other cancers and cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. The Smokers health Multiple ACtions (SMAC-1) trial aimed to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of an integrated program based on the early detection of smoking-related thoraco-cardiovascular diseases in high-risk subjects, combined with primary prevention. A new multi-component screening design w…

Using eye tracking to evaluate the impact of smartphone-delivered attentional bias modification training for smokers.

Attentional bias modification (ABM) has been proposed to treat tobacco use disorder by reducing attentional bias (AB) to smoking-related cues. We sought to determine the extent to which AB to smoking cues, as measured by eye-tracking technology, was sensitive to multisession ABM among treatment-seeking adult smokers. The participants (N = 203; 74 women) completed 13 days of daily ABM or sham training using a smartphone, followed by 8 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy and cessation counseling. ABM and sham training were administered using the modified dot-probe task (i.e., neutral cues prob…

Reasons for shisha smoking: Findings from a mixed methods study among adult shisha smokers in Nigeria.

Shisha smoking has increased significantly worldwide over the past decade including in developing countries such as Nigeria. We aimed to understand the reasons for shisha smoking in Nigeria in order to address the lack of context-specific evidence to inform the national response to the growing threat posed by shisha smoking. We adopted the Theory of Planned Behaviour to conduct in-depth interviews among 78 purposely sampled current shisha smokers in 13 states (six in each state), and a quantitative survey including a random sample of 611 current shisha smokers in 12 states, across the six geop…

Carbon monoxide and prognosis in smokers hospitalised with acute cardiac events: a multicentre, prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cigarettes produces carbon monoxide (CO), which can reduce the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. We aimed to determine whether elevated expiratory CO levels would be associated with a worse prognosis in smokers presenting with acute cardiac events. METHODS: From 7 to 22 April 2021, expiratory CO levels were measured in a prospective registry including all consecutive patients admitted for acute cardiac event in 39 centres throughout France. The primary outcome was 1-year all-cause death. Initial in-hospital major adverse cardiac events (MAE; death, resuscitated cardia…
