Intravascular leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a benign smooth muscle tumor that evolves from the pelvic veins and can spread to the central veins and heart. Cardiac involvement is the most commonly reported presentation. Initial diagnosis is difficult, and IVL is commonly misdiagnosed as thrombus or atrial myxoma. Appropriate imaging and a high clinical suspicion are required for accurate diagnosis. We report a rare case of IVL in the external iliac vein that recurred 4 years after hysterectomy. Only four cases have been reported in the literature to involve the external iliac vein as it has no direct…

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor which is rarely found in urethra. It often appears in females during their reproductive age (from menarche to menopause); the mean age of their appearance is approximately 41 years. Less than 100 cases were reported in the literature. We hereby report a case of a 52-year-old White woman who presented with complaints of dysuria and urinary tract infection. The mass was completely removed by transvaginal excision with a rim of normal tissue. Histopathological studies confirmed the urethral leiomyoma. The patient remained asymptomatic and there was no evi…

Herein we present 82-year-old man with leiomyosarcoma arising from the spermatic cord with scalp metastasis, five years after primary surgical treatment. Complete surgical excision is required in such cases, as well as precise evaluation of further therapy. Paratesticular leiomyosarcoma is a rare entity, malignant mesenchimal tumor of smooth muscle differentiation. Although leiomyosarcomas of different localizations have well-known metastatic potential, cutaneous metastases are extremely rare with only 16 cases described in the literature. To our knowledge there are no reported cases of the pa

Cutaneous leiomyoma is a benign dermal tumor of smooth muscle. Leiomyoma can occur at any age but typically develops during adolescence or early adult life. Congenital leiomyoma is an extremely rare reported variant. A five-month-old boy presented to our clinic with a progressively enlarging mass on his occipital scalp. Microscopic examination of the solitary ulcerated nodule showed a non-encapsulated mass in the dermis composed of spindle-shaped cells. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemical studies, which were compatible with leiomyoma. Therefore, clinical suspicion of leiomyoma s

Two patients with a heretofore undescribed unilateral choristomatous malformation of the intracranial optic nerve and chiasm underwent craniotomy for partial resection of the optic nerve in the belief that the tumor was either a glioma or a meningioma. Visual acuity in the affected eye was reduced to 20/200 in one patient and to finger counting in the other. Chiasmal involvement in the first case was associated with a superotemporal field defect in the opposite eye. Ophthalmoscopy disclosed atrophic nerve heads in both affected eyes. Heteroplastic masses of smooth muscle and adipose tissue rep

Leiomyosarcomas are extremely rare tumors which develop from smooth muscle, usually in the esophagus and large vessels (inferior vena cava, pulmonary artery, and superior vena cava). In very rare cases, leiomyosarcomas develop from small vessels in the soft tissue of the mediastinum. Clinical expression of mediastinal leiomyosarcomas (dysphagia, dysphonia) is related to their large size and the subsequent compression of mediastinal structures. At pathology examination, the gross aspect is one of a single cell tumor. Microscopically, the tumor may be highly undifferentiated making it necessary

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare low-grade metastatic tumor with an unknown origin that spreads through lymphatic vessels. It is characterized by the proliferation of smooth muscle-like or epithelioid tumor cells in the lung and axial lymphatic system. Extrapulmonary LAM is a localized disease with a low incidence rate, and the location of the related lesions is atypical. It is difficult to diagnose. The LAM of pelvic lymph nodes is hidden. It is usually found through gynecological oncology surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 57-year-old postmenopausal woman with a pel

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare neoplasms that share phenotypic features with angiomyolipomas, clear cell sugar tumors, and lymphangioleiomyomatosis. They presumably represent the neoplastic counterpart of a yet-unidentified perivascular epithelioid cell that expresses smooth muscle and melanocytic immunomarkers. The uterus is the second most common site of origin for perivascular epithelioid cell tumors, after the retroperitoneum. Although most uterine perivascular epithelioid cell tumors are clinically benign and can be cured by a complete surgical excision, there is

Although most smooth muscle neoplasms detected in the human uterus are benign, uterine leiomyosarcoma (Ut-LMS) is extremely malignant with high rates of recurrence and metastasis. CAVEOLIN 1 (CAV1) levels in the epithelial cells of some carcinomas have been reported to increase during tumor progression. We herein evaluated the relationship between CAV1 expression and the pathological features of patients diagnosed with uterine mesenchymal tumors at several clinical facilities. No clinical link was observed between CAV1 expression and the malignancy of human uterine mesenchymal tumors. CAV1 exp

Since 1963 in the All-Union Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery 1445 patients with malignant lung tumors were operated upon, in 44 patients (3%) rare tumors were observed. The source of the rare tumors origination was: epithelium--in 14 cases, connective tissue--in 3, vessels--in 10, smooth muscle--in 3, nervous tissue--in 2, hemopoietic tissue--in 6, pleura--in 4. In one observation the tumor showed a mixed genesis, and in one case it exhibited a dysembryogenetic character. Rare malignant lung tumors (especially sarcomas, plasmocytomas, mesotheliomas) show a definite speci

CONTEXT: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are specific, generally Kit (CD117)-positive, mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract encompassing a majority of tumors previously considered gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumors. They are believed to originate from interstitial cells of Cajal or related stem cells.
OBJECTIVE: To review current clinicopathologically relevant information on GIST.
DATA SOURCES: Literature in Medline and authors' own experience.
CONCLUSIONS: GISTs usually occur in older adults (median age 55-60 years) and rarely in children in the second decade (<1%) t…

Angiolipoleiomyoma is a benign mesenchymal mass composed of smooth muscle, mature adipose tissue, and abnormal blood vessels. It is rarely diagnosed in uterine masses and its prevalence among benign uterine lesions is 0.06%. We report the case of a 40-year-old female presenting with a complaint of heavy menstrual bleeding. Computed tomography scan revealed a large uterine mass with the right ovarian cyst. Histopathological examination confirmed the nature of the lesion as a benign angiolipoleiomyoma with a dermoid cyst of the right ovary. This rare association is reported to apprise gynecologi

Paraurethral leiomyoma is an exceptionally rare benign smooth muscle tumor adjacent to the female urethra, presenting diagnostic challenges due to nonspecific symptoms like urinary obstruction and dysuria. This case report details the clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and surgical management of a 45-year-old woman with a paraurethral leiomyoma. Diagnosis involved clinical examination, imaging, and biopsy. The mass was excised via a perineal route without urethral injury, confirmed by histopathology. The patient recovered well, voiding without difficulty postoperatively. This case empha…

The spindle cell neoplasms include sinonasal tract angiofibroma (STA), glomangiopericytoma (GPC), and biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma (BSNS). These entities share some clinical, histomorphologic, immunohistochemical, and even molecular characteristics. Nevertheless, there are features that are unique to each tumor type. STA shows heavily collagenized and vascular stroma, with apparent relationship to underlying hormonal changes. GPC consistently exhibits monomorphic, ovoid cytologic appearance with the constant feature of Beta-catenin nuclear accumulation by IHC. Lastly, BSNS is a deceptively b

A 35-year-old woman presented to the hospital with a 4-week history of large-volume chylous ascites refractory to paracentesis and new-onset dyspnea. Thoracic computed tomography revealed diffuse pulmonary cystic lesions with pleural effusions, and abdominal computed tomography showed ascites with large bilateral retroperitoneal masses displaying positron emission tomography avidity. Biopsy of the masses demonstrated lymphatic invasion by a perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasm, a smooth muscle tumor. The patient was diagnosed as having the sporadic form of lymphangioleiomyomatosis and was tr…

Vascular leiomyoma is a benign, usually solitary tumor arising from the tunica media of the vein. It can occur anywhere in the body wherever smooth muscle is present. These masses are commonly found in the uterus, urogenital tract and gastrointestinal tract but also less commonly in the extremities. They occur more often in the lower extremities than the upper extremities. Females are more affected than males and are generally seen in the third and fourth decades of life. We present magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathologic features of two pathology proven subcutaneous vascular leiomyoma

The present study described for the first time a high heterogeneity of blood vessels in non-Hodgkin lymphomas (nHL). The tumor blood vessels were highlighted with CD105÷smooth muscle actin (SMA) and CD34/SMA double immunostaining. For both follicular and diffuse types of lymphomas, more than 85% of CD34/SMA positive vessels were of immature and intermediate type. A percent of 96.54 from CD105/SMA assessed blood vessels were of activated and mature activated types with high expression of CD105 on endothelial cells of newly formed blood vessels. Our results suggest that these types of vessels ar

We report a case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of a sublingual gland in a 70-year-old man. Under a clinical diagnosis of benign salivary gland tumor, excision of the mass with the sublingual salivary gland in an en bloc fashion via an intraoral approach was performed. Histopathologically, there was a rupture of the fibrous capsule and diffuse cell-rich sheets composed of myoepithelial cells with round nuclei were also seen. Immunohistochemically, the cells that composed of cell rich sheets were positive to smooth muscle actin. Final diagnosis of myoepithelial carcinoma ex pleomorphic ade

INTRODUCTION: A leiomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor of the smooth muscle. Its malignancy is difficult to assess. Submandibular gland involvement is extremely rare.
OBSERVATION: A 62-year-old patient was admitted with a primary leiomyosarcoma of the submandibular gland. He was treated by surgery and radiotherapy. The patient died 11 months later from pulmonary metastases.
DISCUSSION: LMS of the submandibular gland is extremely rare. Its diagnosis is very difficult because of the non-specific clinical and radiological signs. The histological diagnosis often relies on immunohistochemistry. Trea

We describe a cutaneous angiomyxoma on the head of a 38-year-old man without evidence of Carney's complex. Complete excision of the tumor appeared to be curative. Histologic examination revealed fibroblast-like cells embedded in a well-demarcated, lobulate, mucinous, and vascularized stroma with a delicate reticulin network. Immunohistologically, the stromal cells were consistently positive for vimentin and focally positive for smooth muscle A-actin but were negative for desmin, KP1, MAC387, factor XIIIa, CD34, Leu-7, and S-100. Cutaneous angiomyxoma appears to represent a myofibroblastic neop
