Unchaining people with mental disorders: medication is not the solution.

Chaining of people with mental disorders, and their incarceration and abuse in prisons or mental hospitals, is an affront to psychiatry and humanity. Although mental healthcare always needs attention to cultural and social contexts, this must never be at the cost of allowing human rights violations to go unchallenged. A rights-based approach must enforce well-established international human rights conventions, and scale-up comprehensive community services around the needs and preferences of people affected by mental disorders. Declaration of interest None.

Determining the relative importance of risk and protective factors for adjustment disorder symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic by mixed-effects random forests.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed individuals to numerous psychosocial and health-related stressors associated with adjustment disorder (AjD) symptoms, yet it remains unclear which factors are most predictive. METHODS: Using mixed-effects regression random forests (MERF), a machine learning approach that combines random forests with mixed-effects regressions, we analyzed longitudinal data from 15,155 adults across 11 European countries collected at three time points between June 2020 and January 2022. We evaluated 245 candidate predictors, including sociodemographic, pandemic-related,

An Empirical Study of Personality Disorders Among Treatment-Seeking Problem Gamblers.

The primary aims of this study were to examine the prevalence of personality disorders in problem gamblers, to explore the relationship between personality disorders and problem gambling severity, and to explore the degree to which the psychological symptoms highlighted in the biosocial developmental model of borderline personality disorder (impulsivity, distress tolerance, substance use, PTSD symptoms, psychological distress and work/social adjustment) are associated with problem gambling. A secondary aim was to explore the strength of the relationships between these symptoms and problem gamb

Crisis-oriented residential treatment as an alternative to hospitalization.

The La Posada program, a short-term alternative to hospitalization for acutely disturbed chronic patients, combines crisis intervention techniques with techniques developed in halfway houses to enhance independent functioning and counteract regressive, dependent behavior. Highly structured days involving a variety of approaches including group and individual therapy, therapeutic activities, expectations of appropriate behavior, and responsibility for ongoing treatment enable most clients to leave the program within nine days and to begin outpatient and day treatment before discharge. Social anxiety and motives for alcohol use among adolescents.

Social anxiety evidences significant comorbidity with alcohol use disorders and alcohol-related problems. In an effort to better understand this co-occurrence, researchers are beginning to evaluate specific drinking-related factors, including alcohol use motives, among socially anxious individuals. Drawing on Cooper's (1994) 4-factor model of drinking motives (enhancement, social, conformity, coping), a growing body of work suggests that socially anxious individuals may consume alcohol in an effort to cope with their anxious symptoms; however, no study to date has examined these relations amon

Stuttering: Our Current Knowledge, Research Opportunities, and Ways to Address Critical Gaps.

Our understanding of the neurobiological bases of stuttering remains limited, hampering development of effective treatments that are informed by basic science. Stuttering affects more than 5% of all preschool-age children and remains chronic in approximately 1% of adults worldwide. As a condition that affects a most fundamental human ability to engage in fluid and spontaneous verbal communication, stuttering can have substantial psychosocial, occupational, and educational impacts on those who are affected. This article summarizes invited talks and breakout sessions that were held in June 2023

Perceived Value of a Knowledge Translation Intervention Designed to Facilitate Burn Survivors' Work Reintegration.

Returning to work can be challenging for burn survivors. Approximately 28% never return to any form of employment, resulting in lower health-related quality of life. Open communication has been identified as a facilitator for return to work (RTW). To ease the RTW process and promote communication with coworkers and employers a knowledge translation (KT) intervention was developed for burn survivors. Following its implementation, the impact on the RTW process was evaluated. This study was a cross-sectional, mixed methods study where burn survivors included in the KT intervention were compared w

Correlates of persistent postconcussional disorder: DSM-IV criteria versus ICD-10.

Controversy surrounding the causation of symptom complaints after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is reflected by the existence of alternative diagnostic criteria for postconcussional syndrome (PCS) in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and postconcussional disorder (PCD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-4th edition (DSM-IV). Previous studies of persisting symptoms have employed various symptom checklists rather than uniform criteria-based diagnoses. This is the first prospective study of persisting symptom complaints using the formal diagnostic c

Alexithymia and Autistic Traits: Associations With Social and Emotional Challenges Among College Students.

Background: Alexithymia is a multifaceted personality construct defined by marked difficulties in identifying and describing feelings and in externally oriented thinking. Given its intrinsic role in social-emotional processing, alexithymia is now recognized as a trans-diagnostic trait in a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism. Research has pinpointed to the co-occurrence of autism with characteristics typical of alexithymic normative samples, such as social-communication difficulties and decreased emotion regulation abilities. Nonetheless, the role of individual facets of al

Early Sociocognitive Development Among Spanish-Speaking Participants: A Preliminary Study Using the Early Social Cognition Inventory (ESCI).

BACKGROUND: The early development of sociocognitive skills is linked to, and serves as a precursor for, the development of communication, language, and socialisation. Some of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism, are characterised by difficulties in communication and social interaction. Identifying delays in these skills could enable us to detect an earlier warning sign. METHOD: The original version of the Early Social Cognition Inventory (ESCI), a 21-item parent-reported questionnaire, was translated and culturally and linguistically adapted for use in Spain. PART

mTOR Signaling Disruption and Its Association with the Development of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication along with repetitive stereotypic behaviors. Currently, there are no specific biomarkers for diagnostic screening or treatments available for autistic patients. Numerous genetic disorders are associated with high prevalence of ASD, including tuberous sclerosis complex, phosphatase and tensin homolog, and fragile X syndrome. Preclinical investigations in animal models of these diseases have revealed irregularities in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway as

The use of the ADI-R as a diagnostic tool in the differential diagnosis of children with infantile autism and children with a receptive language disorder.

Children with infantile autism and children with a specific receptive language disorder often show similar behavioural problems, making the differentiation between these two diagnostic categories difficult. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of parental information in the differential diagnosis of the two types of disorders mentioned above. Sixteen children with a receptive language disorder and 11 children with infantile autism participated in the study. All children had normal non-verbal IQs. The ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) was performed with all children

Community practices as coping mechanisms for mental health in Kashmir.

With a steady rise in mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Kashmir, the need to address mental health in this region becomes important. This paper reports on traditional and current community mental health coping mechanisms among residents in Kashmir. Six focus group discussions (FGD) were facilitated with key informants. Data were analyzed via a thematic analytic approach. Community coping mechanisms reported include social spaces and shared chore spaces, cultural practices, shrines and religious places, faithealers. These findings dem

Life stress as a mediator and community belonging as a moderator of mood and anxiety disorders and co-occurring disorders with heavy drinking of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual Canadians.

PURPOSE: To examine the extent to which sexual identity disparities in mental health outcomes (anxiety disorder, mood disorder, anxiety-mood disorder, and co-occurring anxiety or mood disorder and heavy drinking) are mediated by life stress or moderated by a sense of community belonging. METHODS: This study pooled data from a large, national, multi-year sample of Canadians aged 18-59 years, who self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or heterosexual (N = 222,548). A series of stratified binary mediation models were fitted. Significance of the indirect effect was determined by using bootstr

Impact of augmented reality on narrative-related outcomes in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a within-subject design.

INRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is commonly associated with impairments in social communication, narrative abilities, and socio-cognitive functioning. This study explored whether augmented reality (AR) could enhance narrative production, comprehension, use of mental state language, and reading-related behaviors in children with ASD. METHODS: Fifteen children with ASD without intellectual disability participated in a within-subjects design in which they completed story retelling tasks under two counterbalanced conditions: a traditional paper-based format and a tablet-based format.

RETRACTED ARTICLE: Hybrid deep learning model for autism spectrum disorder diagnosis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition pertaining to the communication, social connectivity and conduct of individuals. ASD individuals develop symptoms such as recurrent actions, atypical facial expressions and challenges in social engagement. ASD prediction depends on various measures such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data, game-based assessments, kinematic traits, questionnaires, head activity analysis, motor activities and eye-tracking. Traditional diagnostic approaches are subjective. These approaches are clinician-dependent and time-consuming.
