Coping With Bullying Among Teenage Victims in Egypt: Mediating Effects of Sense of Hope and Social Support on Coping Styles.

PROBLEM: Victims of bullying often experience a range of psychological consequences, including increased risk for depression, anxiety, and other stress-related disorders. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating roles of hope and perceived social support in the relationship between bullying victimization and coping strategies among teenage victims in Egypt. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted in eight governmental middle and secondary schools in Alexandria, Egypt, with 400 teenagers selected randomly from the eight educational zones

Sexual Behavior, App Use, and Venue Comfort During COVID-19: A Global Study of Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Little global research exists exploring the impact of COVID-19 on the sexual behavior of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Using data from a global dataset representing GBMSM from 132 countries, this study assessed sexual behavior and comfort attending social and sexual venues (bars, saunas, sex parties) during the pandemic. Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey implemented by Hornet, a popular gay social-networking app, from October to November 2020. A total of 15,499 GBMSM were included in this analysis. Nearly two thirds (64.8%) of the sample had met a se

A quantum-like rumor propagation model captures bimodal spreading dynamics in social networks.

With the proliferation of online social networks, rumors can spread rapidly, amplifying public-opinion risks and threatening social stability. To address this issue, we develop a six-state quantum-like rumor propagation model on a static social network by coupling ternary beliefs with binary behaviors. Unlike traditional discrete-state models, the proposed model uses a density operator to characterize individual states and their temporal evolution, allowing multiple belief-behavior tendencies to coexist. Decoherence models coherence loss induced by environmental noise, while a time-dependent m

Successful outcomes with low-threshold intervention for cannabis use disorders in Norway - an observational study.

AIMS: Cannabis is the most commonly used regulated drug by European youths. Yet, few cannabis-specific interventions have been examined in Europe. The Cannabis Cessation Program (CCP) was developed in Sweden in the 1990s and has been implemented in some Norwegian municipalities. The present study aimed to examine outcomes of this intervention in the Norwegian setting. METHOD: The respondents (N = 102) were recruited in four community-based CCPs in Norway. We examined their changes in cannabis use, other substance use, mental distress, well-being, sense of coherence (SoC), and social networks,

Black Women's Psychosocial Experiences with Seeking Surgical Treatment for Uterine Fibroids: Implications for Clinical Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Black women are more likely to undergo surgery for uterine fibroids compared with non-Black women. However, few studies have characterized the psychosocial experiences of Black women seeking fibroid treatment. We aimed to identify factors that shape Black women's fibroid management decisions; explore how discrimination based on race, class, and gender feature in treatment-seeking experiences, and compare experiences across age and socioeconomic status. METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with 37 Black women undergoing surgery for fibroid management. We used a themati

Injecting transition risk and depression among Mexican American non-injecting heroin users.

INTRODUCTION: Existing research has documented high comorbid rates for injecting drug use (IDU) and social and health consequences including HIV infection, a condition that disproportionately affects U.S. Hispanic populations. Few studies have examined the specific associations between injecting transition risk among non-injecting heroin using (NIU) populations and mental health conditions. This study hypothesizes that injecting transition risk will be strongly associated with depression symptomatology controlling for age and gender among Mexican American NIUs. METHODS: Street-recruited NIUs

Unveiling symptom-level pathways: a network analysis of fear of missing out and mobile phone addiction among Chinese college students.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have revealed the relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO) and mobile phone addiction based on total scores. However, there has been a lack of research exploring how the specific dimensions of mobile phone addiction and items of FoMO are interrelated. The present study aimed to investigate the structural relationships between these two components and identify critical nodes using network analysis. METHODS: A sample of 1,616 Chinese college students (aged 18-25) completed the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs) and the Mobile Phone Addiction Index (MPAI). We empl

High-order alpha-band network reorganization underpins clinical symptom alleviation following EEG neurofeedback in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder: a multidimensional study.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is increasingly recognized as a disorder of neural connectivity and network architecture. While EEG neurofeedback (NFB) has shown clinical efficacy in ameliorating ASD symptoms, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms-specifically regarding high-order network reorganization beyond simple power spectrum changes-remain poorly understood. Furthermore, there is a need to validate whether robust biomarkers can be identified using low-density EEG systems suitable for preschool children. METHODS: In this randomized, sham-controlled trial, 40 preschool

Living with invisible illness: social support experiences of individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE: Because symptoms are not immediately visible to others, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is often considered an invisible illness. This invisibility can reduce the social support received from network members and adversely affect the quality of life. In the light of this, social support from formal support groups and from medical professionals can be particularly important; however, literature examining support from these sources is scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and impact of social support from medical professionals and from support groups for individu

The Role of Stress and Perceived Social Support in the Association Between Perceived Discrimination and Mental Health Among Migrant Domestic Workers in Hong Kong.

International migrant workers often face discrimination and poor work conditions that may negatively affect their mental health. Female migrant domestic workers (MDW), who often must reside in their place of work, may face additional daily stressors and discrimination compared with other international migrant workers. To address the stresses from discrimination and other challenges faced by MDWs, use of social support networks are often encouraged to improve mental well-being. This study seeks to examine the mediating effect of stress between perceived discrimination and self-reported mental h

Exploring the Dietary Patterns and Health Behaviours of Centenarians in Ourense (Spain): Adherence to the Southern European Atlantic Diet.

Background: Understanding the multifactorial determinants of human longevity remains a major scientific challenge. Certain regions of the world-so-called "longevity hotspots"-exhibit a notably high prevalence of centenarians; one such region is the province of Ourense, in north-western Spain. Objectives: This study aimed to analyse, for the first time, the nutritional factors associated with healthy longevity among centenarians, as well as those linked to longevity irrespective of health status, in the province of Ourense. Methods: A cross-sectional, retrospective, observational, mixed-methods

Mass hysteria among student performers: social relationship as a symptom predictor.

OBJECTIVE: In April 1989 an outbreak of illness suddenly afflicted student performers in Santa Monica, Calif., and an extensive investigation revealed no environmental cause. To clarify the details of the epidemic and determine whether mass hysteria occurred, the authors examined physical, psychological, and social factors that might have contributed to the outbreak. METHOD: Participating middle- and high-school performers were surveyed; 93% (N = 519) responded; cases were defined as students who had one or more symptoms during the outbreak. A stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to

Network analysis of quality of life and depression in a randomized breast cancer trial with ten-years follow-up.

Due to the growing amount of breast cancer survivors we must understand their long-term quality of life (QoL) better. Many breast cancer survivors suffer for years from lower functioning capacity and several symptoms, but outcomes regarding their global Quality of Life (gQoL) are less clear. The current study explored the links between functions, symptoms, and gQoL using a network design. We used data from 364 women who had completed adjuvant chemotherapy or started adjuvant endocrine therapy. QoL, symptomatology and functioning were measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30 and BR-23 questionnaires, and

The effect of distress on the balance between goal-directed and habit networks in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The classical cognitive-behavioral theory of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) holds that compulsions are performed to reduce distress that is evoked by obsessions, whereas a recent neuroscience-inspired theory suggests that compulsivity results from a disbalance between goal-directed and habit-related neural networks. To bridge these theories, we investigated whether the balance between goal-directed and habit networks in patients with OCD was affected during psychological distress. Twenty-three OCD patients and twenty-three healthy controls participated in a controlled stress induction par

Health disparities in orthopedic trauma: a qualitative study examining providers' perspectives on barriers to care and recovery outcomes.

Social workers involved in interdisciplinary orthopedic trauma care can benefit from the knowledge of providers' perspectives on healthcare disparities in this field. Using qualitative data from focus groups conducted on 79 orthopedic care providers at three Level 1 trauma centers, we assessed their perspectives on orthopedic trauma healthcare disparities and discussed potential solutions. Focus groups originally aimed to detect barriers and facilitators of the implementation of a trial of a live video mind-body intervention to aid in recovery in orthopedic trauma care settings (Toolkit for Op

What constitutes a syndemic? Methods, contexts, and framing from 2019.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to describe what methods were used for 60 articles on HIV syndemics in 2019, where they took place, what syndemic clusters emerged, and why this matters. RECENT FINDINGS: Most articles published in 2019 used regression analyses, and fewer used higher level modeling techniques, frequencies and descriptive, longitudinal cohort study, and social network analysis. Some employed ethnography, qualitative interviews, or were simply reviews. Most syndemic co-factors were substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, depression, intimate partner violence, sti…

Where "Old Heads" Prevail: Inmate Hierarchy in a Men's Prison Unit.

Research of inmate social order is a once-vibrant area that receded just as American incarceration rates climbed and the country's carceral contexts dramatically changed. This study reengages inmate society with an abductive mixed methods investigation of informal status within a contemporary men's prison unit. The authors collect narrative and social network data from 133 male inmates housed in a unit of a Pennsylvania medium-security prison. Analyses of inmate narratives suggest that unit "old heads" provide collective goods in the form of mentoring and role modeling that foster a positive a

Amplitude variability over trials in hemodynamic responses in adolescents with ADHD: The role of the anterior default mode network and the non-specific role of the striatum.

It has been suggested that intra-individual variability (IIV) in performance on attention and other cognitive tasks might be a cognitive endophenotype in individuals with ADHD. Despite robust IIV findings in behavioral data, only sparse data exist on how what type of brain dysfunction underlies variable response times. In this study, we asked whether ADHD IIV in reaction time on a commonly-used test of attention might be related to variation in hemodynamic responses (HRs) observed trial-to-trial. Based on previous studies linking IIV to regions within the "default mode" network (DMN), we predi

Assessment of Adaptive Engagement and Support Model for People With Chronic Health Conditions in Online Health Communities: Combined Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: With the pervasiveness of social media, online health communities (OHCs) are an important tool for facilitating information sharing and support among people with chronic health conditions. Importantly, OHCs offer insight into conversations about the lived experiences of people with particular health conditions. Little is known about the aspects of OHCs that are important to maintain safe and productive conversations that support health. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the provision of social support and the role of active moderation in OHCs developed in accordance with and m
