Being female with vitiligo disease in traditional societies within North Africa.

This study aims to assess the influence of vitiligo illness on the quality of life of female individuals residing in Ajdabiya, Libya. Through this investigation, we aim to enhance our comprehension of the potential impact of cultural norms and conventional gender roles on managing and caring for skin disorders within a North African society. Over a 20-week period, 65 female participants diagnosed with vitiligo were recruited. The participants' quality of life was assessed using the Skindex-16 scale. This validated tool measures the impact of skin disease on several aspects of an individual's l

Distribution of verbal and physical violence for same and opposite genders among adolescents.

The present study was set up to test the perceived distribution of verbal and physical violent behaviors among same- and opposite-genders. More specifically, those perceived violent behaviors are examined as the outcome of adolescents' cost-risk goals. The study assumes two conflicting social goals: Whereas the goal of risk reduction may motivate withdrawal from conflict, and decrease the prevalence of violent events, the goal of pursuing social status may motivate initiation and/or retaliation, thus increasing the prevalence of violence. The study is based on a sample of 155 high-school stude…

Gender-based in-group social influence can lead women to view a hostile sexist attitude as less prejudiced and more true.

Social influence processes by which women come to judge a hostile sexist attitude as relatively true and unprejudiced were examined. Based upon status characteristics theory, women's judgments were expected to be more strongly influenced by a man's than a woman's interpretation of the sexist attitude as true or prejudiced. Based upon self-categorization theory, women's judgments were expected to be more strongly influenced by a woman's than a man's interpretation. Support was primarily observed for the self-categorization theory prediction. This effect, however, was initially suppressed by par

Perceptions of Housing and Shelter among People with Histories of Unstable Housing in three Cities in Canada: A Qualitative Study.

Housing is a key social determinant of health that contributes to the well-documented relationship between socioeconomic status and health. This study explored how individuals with histories of unstable and precarious housing perceive their housing or shelter situations, and the impact of these settings on their health and well-being. Participants were recruited from the Health and Housing in Transition study (HHiT), a longitudinal, multi-city study that tracked the health and housing status of people with unstable housing histories over a 5-year period. For the current study, one-time semi-st

Parental Mental Illness, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Parenting Behavior: The Moderating Role of Social Support.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parental mental disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder (BPD), impair parenting behavior. Consequently, the children exhibit an elevated risk for psychopathology across their lifespan. Social support for parents is thought to moderate the relationship between parental mental illness and parenting behavior. It may dampen negative effects and serve as starting point for preventive interventions. This paper provides a literature overview regarding the impact of social support on the sequelae of parental mental illness and BPD for parenting behavior. RECENT FIND

Biomedical versus cultural constructions of abnormality: the case of idiopathic hirsutism in the United States.

From an examination of (1) psychological and social stresses documented by the medical profession of women with amounts of hair departing from what is considered to be the "feminine" distribution of hair (idiopathic hirsutism), (2) biomedical information about male and female hair growth and distribution, (3) definitional influences of society, and (4) instrumental maneuverings of depilatory industries, this paper offers insights about the alteration of natural female facial and body hair to conform to a social construct of gender status. Although the hair problem is interesting in itself, its

PET imaging of kappa opioid receptors and receptor expression quantified in neuron-derived extracellular vesicles in socially housed female and male cynomolgus macaques.

Recent positron emission tomography (PET) studies of kappa opioid receptors (KOR) in humans reported significant relationships between KOR availability and social status, as well as cocaine choice. In monkey models, social status influences physiology, receptor pharmacology and behavior; these variables have been associated vulnerability to cocaine abuse. The present study utilized PET imaging to examine KOR availability in socially housed, cocaine-naïve female and male monkeys, and peripheral measures of KORs with neuron-derived extracellular vesicles (NDE). KOR availability was assessed in d…

Exploring the Connection between Social Housing and Employment: A Scoping Review.

Adequate housing is a social determinant of health and well-being, providing stability from which people can engage in important life activities, including self-care and productivity. Social housing is a system-level intervention that aims to provide affordable housing to people vulnerable to experiencing social and economic marginalisation. Given the importance of employment to social-economic status and overall health and well-being, we sought to better understand the available knowledge and research related to employment and living in a social housing environment. We used scoping review met

Long-Term Social, Academic, and Professional Outcomes in Adults Following Pediatric Kidney Transplant: A Single-Center Study.

OBJECTIVES: Kidney transplant is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease in children due to superior effects on survival, growth, and quality of life versus dialysis. However, childhood kidney transplant presents unique challenges for long-term social, academic, and professional integration as recipients transition into adulthood. We assessed the educational attainment, employment status, and marital outcomes of an adult cohort of childhood kidney transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all pediatric kidney transplants at Başkent University Hospit

Drinking Motives and Alcohol Consumption Among Asian American Young Adults: The Moderating Role of Alcohol-Related Facial Flushing.

BACKGROUND: Despite guidelines recommending lower alcohol limits for individuals who flush, some still drink at unhealthy levels. This study investigates whether drinking motives are differentially associated with alcohol consumption based on self-reported flushing status among U.S. Asian young adults. Asian American youth report alcohol use at rates comparable to other high-risk groups, identifying the need to understand factors shaping these behaviors. METHODS: The current analysis drew participants from a longitudinal multi-cohort study examining the emotional and behavioral health of coll

Major depression and household food insecurity among individuals with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in South Africa.

PURPOSE: Household food insecurity in South Africa is a pervasive public health challenge. Although its link to chronic health conditions is well established, its relationship to mental illness, particularly major depression, is not well-understood. Despite KwaZulu-Natal Province being the epicenter of the drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) epidemic, and having the largest share of poverty in South Africa, this relationship remains unexamined. This study investigated the association between major depressive episode (MDE) and household food insecurity among individuals with MDR-TB. METHODS:

Effects of adoptive status on evaluations of children.

The authors examined whether being adopted or semi-adopted (born of artificial insemination with donor sperm and genetically linked to the mother but not to the social father) is a stigmatizing attribute affecting evaluations made of a child, and whether the gender of the rater moderates the effects of adoptive status on evaluations of children. Participants included 129 undergraduate students from the United States who were presented with written scenarios describing a child's adoptive status. They were asked to evaluate the child on a number of attributes. Results showed that adoptive status

An evolutionary perspective on the co-occurrence of social anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) commonly co-occurs with, and often precedes, Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). In this paper, we address the relationship between SAD and AUD by considering how natural selection left socially anxious individuals vulnerable to alcohol use, and by addressing the underlying mechanisms. We review research suggesting that social anxiety has evolved for the regulation of behaviors involved in reducing the likelihood or consequences of threats to social status. The management of potential threats to social standing is important considering that these threats can result in red…

From models to mechanisms: odorant communication as a key determinant of social behavior in rodents during illness-associated states.

Pheromones and other social odor cues convey rich information among rodents. Social investigation is described as a key element in olfactory communication, which involves motivated approaches to conspecifics and other socially relevant stimuli. This behavior is activated by the detection of social cues to gather information about conspecifics for subsequent strategies such as avoidance or further approach, thereby determining the extent and nature of physical contact that ensues. This feature indicates a useful way for describing the process of social communication in distance-based manner. In

Textiles as social texts: syphilis, material culture and gender in golden age Spain.

Whereas traditional social and health histories have viewed the garments of early modern patients accessing hospital care as evidence of their poverty, this article reinterprets the meaning of patient clothing in the context of a venereal disease hospital in Toledo, Spain, in the seventeenth century. Patients carefully selected what they wore as they entered the hospital to produce certain effects on local audiences. Thus, these choices can be understood as body scripts meant to be read in certain ways rather than mere reflections of actual social status. In a context of gendered and social pr…

Practice parameter for the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with reactive attachment disorder of infancy and early childhood.

This parameter reviews the current status of reactive attachment disorder with regard to assessment and treatment. Attachment is a central component of social and emotional development in early childhood, and disordered attachment is defined by specific patterns of abnormal social behavior in the context of "pathogenic care." Clinically relevant subtypes include an emotionally withdrawn/inhibited pattern and a socially indiscriminate/disinhibited pattern. Assessment requires direct observation of the child in the context of his/her relationships with primary caregivers. Treatment requires esta
