Pronounced mediastinal emphysema after restorative treatment of the lower left molar-a case report and a systematic review of the literature.

This case report presents an iatrogenic induced mediastinal emphysema after restorative treatment of the lower left second molar, aimed to highlight the potential life-threatening consequences, and providing diagnostics and treatment concepts of complicated dental induced emphysema based on literature review. A 74-year-old female patient was admitted to the emergency department due to a fall on her shoulder. Additional finding was a significant swelling of the face and neck. In the computer tomography of the head, neck, and thorax, a humerus fracture and pronounced soft tissue emphysema from t

The Integral Role of Radiology in the Diagnosis and Management of COVID-19-Associated Mucormycosis Infections.

Recently, there has been a sudden surge in COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) infections. Rhino-oculo-cerebral and pulmonary mucormycosis are the two most common forms of CAM. Radiology plays an integral role in the management of CAM. Computed tomography (CT) determines gross bony and soft tissue involvement in COVID-19-associated rhino-oculo-cerebral mucormycosis, whereas magnetic resonance imaging helps in evaluation of the orbital and intracranial extension. Paranasal sinus soft tissue with extrasinus infiltration with or without bony destruction is suggestive of COVID-19-associated rhi

At-home wireless monitoring of acute hemodynamic disturbances to detect sleep apnea and sleep stages via a soft sternal patch.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects more than 900 million adults globally and can create serious health complications when untreated; however, 80% of cases remain undiagnosed. Critically, current diagnostic techniques are fundamentally limited by low throughputs and high failure rates. Here, we report a wireless, fully integrated, soft patch with skin-like mechanics optimized through analytical and computational studies to capture seismocardiograms, electrocardiograms, and photoplethysmograms from the sternum, allowing clinicians to investigate the cardiovascular response to OSA during home

Subcutaneous Taenia crassiceps Cysticercosis Mass Excision from an 11-Year-Old Mixed-Breed Dog.

An 11 yr old mixed-breed dog presented with a 2 × 3 cm semimovable subcutaneous soft-tissue mass overlying the right hip region that grew to 8 × 5 cm over a 6 mo period. Two separate fine needle aspiration cytology samples showed marked pyogranulomatous inflammation with no cytologically apparent infectious etiology or neoplasia. Computed tomography imaging revealed a well-marginated, heterogeneous, contrast-enhancing soft-tissue mass extending into the adjacent fat, suggestive of neoplasia. A 14G needle biopsy showed similar chronic inflammatory changes without evidence of neoplasia or infect

Pearls and Pitfalls in the Imaging of Soft-Tissue Masses in Children.

There is a broad spectrum of soft-tissue masses in children that can be challenging to diagnose clinically and on imaging. This article reviews the typical clinical and imaging findings of the most common and relevant benign, intermediate and malignant pediatric soft-tissue tumors in the following categories of the 2013 World Health Organization (WHO) classification: adipocytic tumors (lipoma, lipoblastoma, and liposarcoma), fibroblastic/myofibroblastic tumors (nodular fasciitis, myositis ossificans, fibrous hamartoma of infancy, fibromatosis colli, desmoid-type fibromatosis, lipofibromatosis,

[The feasibility of combined lipofilling methods in the treatment of patients with facial hemiatrophy].

The basis of Central Research Institute of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery in the period from 2015 to 2018 years there were 30 patients with primary hemiatrophy (group 1) and patients with hemiatrophy after reconstructive operations (group 2) who were examined and treated. The elimination of deformation of soft tissues was performed by combination of micro-, nano- and classical lipofilling in two sessions with an interval of 6 months. To determine the deficit of tissue volume on the affected side before and at the treatment stages, a computer tomography was performed with the construction

Primary leiomyosarcoma in the colon: A case report.

RATIONALE: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a common type of soft tissue sarcoma. Primary colonic LMS in general is a very rare entity, accounting for 1% to 2% of gastrointestinal malignancies. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of 55-year-old female who presented with a sudden onset of sharp right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Electronic colonoscopy showed a normal lumen. However, an abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a mass of soft tissue attenuation inseparable from the ascending colon which appeared as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). DIAGNOSES: It is important to diagnose LMS d

Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute myeloid leukemia with masses and osteolytic lesions: finding of 18F-FDG PET/CT.

Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute myeloid leukemia is controversial and difficult to distinguish from the blast phase of chronic myeloid leukemia. As a myeloid neoplasm, rare cases of this leukemia manifest multiple soft-tissue tumors or bone lytic lesions. In this paper, we describe a 49-year-old male patient who had an abrupt onset with sharp chest pain, fever, fatigue, emaciation, and splenomegaly. 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) result showed diffuse and uneven hypermetabolic lesions in the bone marrow with peripheral bone mar

Cochlear implant device failure secondary to cholesterol granuloma-mediated cochlear erosion.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: A tertiary care pediatric hospital. PATIENT: A 7-year-old boy complained of retroauricular pain 3.5 years after cochlear implantation. Temporal bone computed tomographic scan revealed a soft tissue density filling the mastoid and middle ear space. There was extensive osseous erosion involving the cochlear promontory that resulted in lateral displacement electrode array into the middle ear space. INTERVENTION: Mastoidectomy with removal of cochlear implant. RESULTS: Pathologic examination of the soft tissue filling the mastoid cavity was consistent with a

Humeral hydatid cyst complicated with extraosseous involvement: a case of unusual location of echinococcosis.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease most commonly caused by Echinococcus granulosus that seldom involves the skeleton and is still common in the countries of the temperate zones. We present an extremely rare case report of a young patient with humeral hydatid disease complicated with extraosseous involvement. Plain film of the left humerus demonstrated distortion of the axis, regional expansion of the humeral shaft with minimal thinning areas of the cortex. Additionally, numerous radiolucent areas of the humeral shaft were observed especially at the distal part of the bone. No calcification

MRI-guided celiac plexus block.

Celiac plexus block is used as a palliative procedure in cases of severe upper abdominal pain caused by pancreatitis or tumors of the pancreas. It can be guided by bony landmarks, fluoroscopy, ultrasound (US), or computed tomography (CT). To avoid severe complications, methods visualizing soft tissue, like CT and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, are preferable. We describe celiac plexus blocks carried out in an open MR scanner, offering needle guidance with an optical tracking system and near real-time image acquisition. Eight patients with severe chronic abdominal pain were included. In these

Transcranial correction of orbital neurofibromatosis.

Neurofibromatosis is a systemic disease that often produces striking disfigurement. Orbital manifestations are common and include sphenoid dysplasia with or without infiltration of the periorbital soft tissues. The resultant deficiency of the posterolateral orbital wall may lead to protrusion of the temporal lobe into the orbit, displacement of the globe, and pulsatile exophthalmos. Treatment at our unit has consisted of transcranial orbital reconstruction with bone grafts and periorbital soft-tissue correction. Observation of complete bone graft resorption in one patient prompted an assessmen

[Blunt trauma of the larynx: comparative assessment of computerized tomography, conventional radiology, and laryngoscopy].

We report on the retrospective analysis of a series of 11 patients with blunt laryngeal injuries examined with Computed Tomography (CT), conventional radiology and laryngoscopy, to compare the diagnostic yield of each technique. Conventional frontal and lateral radiographs showed subcutaneous emphysema in 5 patients, with soft tissue swelling in 4, and thus failed to assess the degree of damage adequately. Cross-section CT showed cartilaginous injuries in 5 patients and adjacent soft tissue changes in 9, thus allowing rapid and accurate assessment of airway damage even in emergency. Laryngosco

Subcutaneous granuloma annulare: four cases and review of the literature.

Subcutaneous granuloma annulare (SGA) produces benign nodules in otherwise healthy children. The histology of the lesions may be indistinguishable from rheumatoid nodules. However, in children the lesion of SGA is not accompanied by connective-tissue disease. We report 4 patients with SGA. There were three girls and one boy ranging in age from 4 to 15 years. All the children presented with a solitary lesion on the lower limb. A cutaneous lesion was also present in case 4. In only one patient (case 4) was there a history of trauma. There was no relevant past medical history. Routine laboratory

[A case of pleural involvement followed by idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis].

We report a rare case of pleural involvement followed by idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis in a 55-year-old man. He complained of right chest pain and his chest radiogram showed pleural thickening and calcification. Chest X-ray computed tomogram (CT) also showed a mass-like pleural thickening and a soft tissue density lesion surrounding the thoracic aorta, suggesting fibrosis. By open pleural biopsy, the mass-like pleural lesion was diagnosed as chronic pleuritis. Three years later, the patient experienced difficulty in urination, and bilateral hydronephrosis which was probably due to a retr

Bladder involvement in Crohn disease: role of CT in detection and evaluation.

A retrospective review of 275 consecutive patients with symptomatic Crohn disease to determine the frequency and type of bladder involvement yielded 14 cases. All 14 patients had a long standing history of Crohn disease with other positive radiologic features at the time of detection of bladder involvement. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the CT findings: Group I (n = 4) had focal bladder wall thickening adjacent to an extravesical soft tissue mass and/or focal bowel wall thickening; Group II (n = 10) had fistula formation with intravesical air with associated focal bowel wa

A rare entity in the retroperitoneum: Case report of a primary seminoma.

Primary retroperitoneal seminoma is an extremely rare extragonadal germ cell tumor. A 61-year-old male was referred following the discovery of a retroperitoneal mass on routine physical examination. Computed tomography and PET-CT revealed a soft-tissue nodule near the left renal hilum, suggestive of a neoplasm. The patient underwent surgical resection, and histopathology confirmed seminoma. Scrotal ultrasound showed no testicular abnormalities, thereby excluding a metastatic origin and confirming the diagnosis of primary retroperitoneal seminoma. This case underscores the importance of conside

Findings of an Extraluminal Leiomyosarcoma of the Urinary Bladder in a Dog.

A 9 yr old male miniature poodle presented with acute diarrhea, vomiting, and a distended abdomen. A large and firm mass was palpated in the caudal abdomen. Radiography showed a large soft-tissue mass in the mid ventral abdomen. The mass was mildly contrast-enhancing and in contact with the right cranial aspect of the bladder on computed tomography. The mass was heterogeneous with minimal blood flow on Doppler examination. Surgery confirmed its origin of the urinary bladder, and it was diagnosed leiomyosarcoma on pathology. This is the first report of extraluminal leiomyosarcoma of the bladder

Rearfoot and Ankle Dislocations.

Subtalar dislocations, ankle dislocations, and total talar dislocations are high-energy injuries. As such, there may be associated osseous or soft tissue injuries that can be diagnosed with advanced imaging such as computed tomography (CT) or MRI. With closed injuries, closed reduction may require sedation or general anesthesia, flexion of the knee to release the tension of the gastrocnemius-soleus complex, distraction is applied, the deformity is accentuated, then the deformity is corrected. Open injuries are usually associated with a higher level of energy and a higher rate of infection. It

Acute calcific tendinitis of the longus colli: A case report.

Acute calcific longus colli tendinitis is a differential diagnosis of neck pain. Typical presentation consists in a triad of symptoms including acute onset neck pain, neck stiffness and odynophagia. Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for acute calcific longus colli tendinitis diagnosis and the main radiological findings include prevertebral soft tissue swelling and the presence of amorphous calcifications. The case involves a 39-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with acute unilateral cervical pain that resulted in acute calcific longus colli tendinitis.
