In this research, the flexural performance of hedgehog spines is investigated in four ways. First, X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) is employed to analyze the complex internal architecture of hedgehog spines. μCT images reveal distinct structural morphology, characterized by longitudinal stringers and transverse central plates, which enhance flexural performance. The combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb interactions makes the 5d iridates a unique platform for realizing novel correlated electronic states. Here, utilizing infrared spectroscopy, we demonstrate that a robust Mott insulating state persists in the 1/3-hole self-doped system La_{3}Ir_{3}O_{11}, evidenced by the collapse of the Drude response and the emergence of sharp excitations across the Mott gap. The quest for new superconductors is of both fundamental and technological importance. Recently, an artificial intelligence method correctly predicted PtPb3Bi to be a superconductor. In this work, we find superconductivity in the newly synthesized MPb4-x Bi x (M = Au, Pd, and Rh), of which PtPb3Bi is a member. We numerically investigate percolation of independent frictionless glued-sphere rodlike particles under gravity through a disordered static bed of larger spheres. We identify two distinct regimes: a trapping regime, where rods stop after percolating a limited distance in the bed and a passing regime, where rods percolate continuously with constant mean velocity. A bonded particle model is used to explore how variations in the material properties of brittle, isotropic solids affect critical behavior in fragmentation. To control material properties, a model is proposed which includes breakable two- and three-body particle interactions to calibrate elastic moduli and mode I and mode II fracture toughnesses. Most cave formation requires mass separation from a host rock in a process that operates outward from permeable pathways to create the cave void.
