The effect of a single administration of phencyclidine on behavior in the rat over a 21-day period.

The effects of phencyclidine (PCP) (7.0, 11.7, 19.5, 32.6, and 54.4 mg/kg) on locomotor activity, stereotyped behavior (circling, backing up … freeze) are not unlike certain of the prolonged behaviors seen in man with PCP overdose (catatonic stupor along with repetitive orofacial and limb movements).

Electroencephalographic assessment of the role of delta receptors in opioid peptide - induced seizures.

DPDPE ([D-Pen2, D-Pen5]-Enkephalin) and DPLPE ([D-Pen2, L-Pen5]-Enkephalin) are conformationally-constrained cyclic analogs of enkephalin with high selectivity for delta opioid receptors. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of each analog acutely produces a complex EEG response in rats characterized by a dose-related increase in spectral power and HVSA (peak frequency of 5.0 Hz) during behavioral stupor, and a theta driving (5.25-8.0 Hz) associated with intense behavioral arousal. These effects were antagonized by high (10 mg/kg), but not low (1.0 mg/kg), doses of naloxone. Both an…

[Cerebellar hemorrhage. Clinico-topographic correlations and therapeutic indications].

Spontaneous cerebellar hemorrhages are more easily recognized since the large use of CT scanner. In this series of 28 cases, they represent 9% of all spontaneous intra-cranial hemorrhages. Three main categories may be described. Small hematomas (less than 3 cm) are located in the postero-medial part of the cerebellum (9 cases): they are difficult to recognize, due to their limited clinical signs; their evolution is spontaneously favorable. Larger hematomas (more than 3 cm) represent two thirds of our clinical cases. When situated near the midline (7 cases) stupor or coma are quite constant, as…

Effect of schedule on activity and toxicity of 5-azacytidine in acute leukemia: a Southwest Oncology Group Study.

One-hundred-fifty-four patients with acute leukemia and extensive prior chemotherapy were treated with 5-Azacytidine and evaluated according … diarrhea, skin rash, myalgias, prolonged myelosuppression, hypotension, and central nervous system stupor and/or coma. Lower dose continuous infusion schedules of five-, seven-, and ten-days duration appear effective and were associated with less toxicity.

Electroencephalographic and behavioral tolerance to and cross-tolerance between D-Ala2-methionine-enkephalinamide and morphine in the rat.

Rats were given repeated intraventricular (i.vt.) injections of D-enkephalin (20 microgram/4 hr) or morphine (20 microgram/4 hr) for 72 to 96 hr during electroencephalograman(EEG) recording. Initial epileptiform EEG and associated wet-dog shakes occurred following D-enkephalin but not morphine. The epileptoid EEG progressed to a continous high-voltage EEG synchrony similar to morphine and was associated with behavioral stupor. Rapid eye movement sleep was also suppressed. Repeated administration of D-enkephalin or morphine produced tolerance to their effects. When challenged with i.vt. morphin…

Carbon dioxide narcosis and grand mal seizure complicating laparoscopic herniorrhaphy.

A 60-year-old man without comorbidity underwent a totally extraperitoneal repair of bilateral inguinal hernias under general anesthesia. Forty minutes after the procedure he developed a slow, shallow respiratory pattern with a respiratory rate of 5/min and a self-limiting grand mal seizure lasting 30 seconds. Arterial blood gas analysis indicated significant hypercarbia and acidosis. The total dose of morphine administered was 20 mg intravenously. Naloxone was administered and the respiratory rate improved. The patient was discharged after 24 hours after making a good recovery and has had no f

Electroconvulsive Therapy for Catatonia in NMDA Receptor Encephalitis Unresponsive to Immunotherapy in a Five Year Old.

Anti-NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor encephalitis (NMDARE) is an autoimmune disease associated with a variety of neuropsychiatric signs and symptoms. Among the most common presentations is catatonia, a psychomotor syndrome associated with mutism, stupor, and abnormal or repetitive movements. Catatonia increases the morbidity associated with NMDARE and must be treated aggressively. Although immunotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for NMDARE, such treatment can take prolonged periods of time to take effect, and thus, alternative approaches to the management of catatonia must be considere…

Tailored Tissue Plasminogen Factor Injection via Subdural Catheter for Subacute Subdural Hematoma in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review.

This report presents an 89-year-old patient with subacute subdural hematoma (SDH) treated with local anesthesia via burr-hole trephination (BHT) and subdural drain placement, followed by liquefaction of the hematoma using the fibrinolytic agent, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Initially, the patient presented with acute post-trauma SDH without neurological symptoms, for which conservative treatment was administered. About a week later, the patient developed hemiplegia and progressed to a stuporous state. Radiographic evidence indicated that the subacute SDH had evolved into a chronic stage…

Case report: Diagnostic challenges in an adolescent case of autistic catatonia.

Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome involving a constellation of psychomotor disturbances including catalepsy, waxy flexibility, stupor, mutism, negativism, agitation, posturing, stereotypes, mannerisms, grimacing, echolalia, and echopraxia. Catatonia occurs in several conditions including psychotic, affective and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in communication, social interaction, restricted interests, repetitive behaviours and sensory sensitivities. Catatonia can occur…

Isolated cerebral mucormycosis: A case discussion.

We report a case of a 32-year-old male with a history of type 1 diabetes, inhaled drug use, and alcohol use disorder, who presented with encephalopathy, holocranial headaches, neck pain, confusion, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. The patient initially presented at a rural community hospital with a fever and was found to be in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). He was also hemodynamically stable but stuporous, prompting intubation to protect his airway. Despite initial treatment measures, his neurological condition worsened and he remained ventilator-dependent. Key findings include a high gluc…

Bilateral vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage treated by staged coil trapping and covered stents graft.

The treatment of bilateral vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (VADAs) presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is still challenging. The authors report a rare case of bilateral VADA treated with coil trapping of ruptured VADA and covered stents implantation after multiple unsuccessful stent assisted coiling of the contralateral unruptured VADA. A 44-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of severe headache and sudden stuporous consciousness. Brain CT showed thick SAH and intraventricular hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography demonstrated bilateral VADA. Based on the SAH pattern…

Clinical and neuroradiological analysis of thrombotic and embolic cerebral infarction.

The clinical and neuroradiological characteristics of cerebral thrombosis and cerebral embolism were established in 109 cases with nonembolic and 120 cases with embolic arterial occlusion of the brain. Cases with cerebral thrombosis due to occlusion of perforating branches were excluded from the study, to equalize the size of the involved arteries in the two groups. More than 60% of patients with cerebral embolism showed a level of consciousness lower than stupor, while less than 15% did so in the thrombotic group. Cortical signs such as aphasia, agnosia, conjugate deviation, etc., were more f…
